“Great views”

Nice accommodations with restaurant. Views from the pool towards volcano was ferric, very lush grounds. Clean rooms with small fridge, nice beds with fluffy pillows and nice showers in the bathrooms. Staff were friendly and helpful.

“Casa Luna was Stellar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

We decided late in the season to book a Costa Rica trip for the four of us (me, wife, and 14 and 17 yr old kids) during Christmas break. We checked TripAdvisor for 4-5 star properties with high ratings but of course they were sold out 3-4 wks before Christmas. A friend of my wife told us about Casa Luna so we checked and found they had a room. Beware: most hotels in Costa Rica consider kids above 10-11 yrs old as adults and therefore require two rooms if it is a 2 person room. Casa Luna allowed us to have the 4 of us in this two bedded room. This was good because there 'was no way Momma was gonna let the kids in another room in another country'. The room was in C bldg 2nd floor. It overlooked the pool which was very beautiful. The pool was very modern, colorful and unbelievably, remarkably clear water. This may be because half the water gets changed out every week from the pure 'rain' in the rainforest. The water was relatively cool, not heated, but was exactly what I wanted after hot hiking all day. The grounds made you feel like you were walking thru a botanical garden or the rainforest. There were many species of orchids, ginger, and heliconia in bloom which I took some great pics of for our Shutterfly trip book. We ate 3 times at the restaurant - 2 breakfasts and one dinner. Breakfast was traditional Costa Rican fare and some staples like eggs, local fruits, and potatoes. Nothing fancy but everything was very fresh and well prepared. Dinner was also fresh with a good variety of choices at reasonable prices. Menus were in U.S. dollars, as were many tourist shops which was a bummer since I wanted to practice my 500 tables :). The front desk staff, especially Vanessa, were very friendly and professional. They spoke excellent English since unfortunately I don't speak Spanish. They can book many of the local tours for you which I highly recommend. Here's why: We had them book three activities for us in advance. The ziplining tour operator we had them schedule called them the day of the tour before we checked in to let them know they had overbooked. Vanessa rebooked us for an earlier tour at another operator since she knew we had other plans the next afternoon. When we didn't arrive early enough for that tour, she again rescheduled us to the following morning. I consider that over and above service! Finally, the gal that took care of our room made animals out of our towels and washcloths, including a fresh flower from the gardens, on our beds. We got pics of our '3 toed sloth' before using it. A nice fun touch for us and our kids!
I hope this review helps someone. I have so often turned to TripAdvisor for advice that I wanted to pay it back.

Room Tip: Go for a second floor room to have a better view of the gardens. C building is right across from the...

“It was fine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

We stayed three nights at Casa Luna in mid-December 2012. I thought the accommodations were fine for the price. Nothing exceptional, but I don't think they promote or price themselves as high end. Truly functional- room had 2 double beds, a decent sized refrig, and a decent sized bathroom. No safe in the room which was a pain.
Had the weather been clearer, we would have had a nice view of the top of Arenal and Cerro Chato. We were in Building B (I think?) the second one from the restaurant and we could definitely hear breakfast music and commotion in the morning.
Breakfast was included with our stay and the food was fine. The wait staff wasn't terribly helpful in the am, but it was a buffet so maybe you can't expect too much service! We did stop at the bar for a couple drinks one evening and the bartender was very friendly and talkative.
We did not use the tour services at the front desk, but we did ask them to call a taxi for us to go to Ecothermales. I was surprised that the taxi charged us about $5 more than our travel agent had predicted and than the returning taxi charged us. Not sure that was the hotel's fault though.
The pool was cool while we were there and the hot tub (is it a hot tub? I'm not sure) wasn't functional so we didn't use either.
This hotel is beyond the entrance to Arenal Vocano and the town of La Fortuna. It is situated on the road up to Cerro Chato and the La Fortuna Waterfall. We walked into town each night for dinner- about 25 minutes each way- and felt safe.
Overall Casa Luna offers decent accommodations, however, if I went back to La Fortuna I would probably stay closer to town or in a hotel that had hot springs activities onsite.

Room Tip: Ask for a second floor room for a balcony to hang your clothes out on and more privacy. If you valu...

“Pleasant stay--good location--everything we needed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013 via mobile

We just completed a 3 night stay here--family of four staying in one room. We enjoyed the beautiful landscaping and pool area. The rooms were very nice--beds good, a/c was good, bathroom had a sweaty sock type odor but not horrible! I think it stays so wet that it never really drys completely with the humidity. The wifi worked well and was handy. We were in the F block on the first floor--would recommend a second floor room if possible for a bit better view. We were really not in our room very much so was not an issue. Breakfast was ample and very good especially cooked to order eggs and omelettes! And also yummy juices! It was very quiet--other than birds in the morning!! About $5 for taxi to town and very quick to ask for a taxi. We did not use the spa but it looked very inviting and wish we could have fit it in. We ate dinner one night at the hotel and it was OK--expensive for the quality and taste of food! We went to the waterfall on the last day and it is close--walkable, but all uphill on the way there. I would recommend this hotel as a good mid to upper range hotel if you want to have a bit more solitude compared to hotels in town!

“Very disappointed - no hot springs!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

I had thought because of the spa and the location, that Casa Luna was going to have hot springs. We had a very tricky drive in the mountains and so were looking forward to finally relaxing at the hotel. But there were no springs. The pool was turned off and cold. The restaurant was closed. It was 8.30 and there was absolutely nothing to do what so ever. We ended up driving 20 min to one of the resorts with hot springs and buying two day passes. There we had everything we wanted.... While the staff was nice, the room clean and the price reasonably - we couldn't really do anything there and never even got to see the volcano because of the weather. I do wonder if it would be a much more enjoyable experience if we had been there in better weather....
