My husband and I booked 2 tours with Desafio on our honeymoon in Costa Rica last week. We did the Rio Balsa whitewater rafting tour and The Lost Canyon Adventure canyoneering tour.
I have to say that this company is AWESOME! All of the guides are very friendly and they make sure that everybody has so much fun. They all speak great English and they are constantly keeping their eyes on you to ensure you are safe at all times. They always arrived at our hotel on time and they had very safe drivers (unlike some of the other tour drivers). Their equipment was all in good condition. I did a lot of research on all of the companies before we booked tours and this one seemed to have their stuff together - much better than the other companies.
I received quick responses via email and they answered all of my questions very thoroughly (what to expect, what to wear, etc.) They also have a great website that accurately describes each tour.
The Rio Balsa trip was a blast - our first time whitewater rafting so the class 2 & 3 rapids were a good way for us to start. It was also very close to La Fortuna so we didn't spend the whole day traveling. The meals were delicious after each tour too!
The Lost Adventure Canyoneering tour was INCREDIBLE! My husband and I had never been rappelling before so we were a little nervous about this tour. They gave us thorough instructions and safety lessons before we started (same with rafting). We started out on a short waterfall too to get comfortable. 2 of the guides were designated photographers and we paid $25 at the end of the tour for a CD of approximately 30 pictures and 2 videos of the trip. The pictures were excellent quality and well worth the money to have those memories. Don't bother taking a waterproof disposable camera - there isn't enough light in the rainforest to get good shots. Also, Teva's or Keen's are a must for this trip - Keen's are a little more protective for your feet but we survived with Teva's (google if you have never heard of these shoes).
We tipped our guides and the cooks on each trip - not much but we gave them what we could. They don't expect the tips but I definitely think they all earned them!
If you are looking for activities to do in La Fortuna, go with these guys . . . you won't regret it!
