“A volcano in your back garden!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2012

This hotel is different in that all the rooms are separately scattered over the property amongst beautiful gardens and almost hidden so you are not aware that others are sharing your little piece of paraadise.
The walk to your room is not far but there are many buggies around so you can often hitch a ride anyway. Wherever you are you can always get a view of the volcano which is awesome! (always provided the cloud/mist has cleared of course - it seems to be semi-permanently shrouded in one or the other.)
The rooms are XL with 2 double beds, AC, massive bathroom with standard shower as well as amazing rock fall shower which is amazing. Very comfortable.
Heated pool with bar - beautiful and has hot pool as well.
Buffet breakfast is good but we ate elsewhere for other meals when we were out.
It is nice to have the seclusion of being out of town - Arenal in quite touristiic - but unless you have a car you then have the transport problem, The hotel shuttle runs about every 30 mins during the day or you can get a cab. If you book an excursion they will pick you up.
I'd recommend car rental if you're here more than a day - then you can do some of the more outlying attractions like the animal rescue charity and the cat sanctuary which are otherwise difficult to get to.
We prefer going off the beaten track and I hate tour buses! Car rental was very reasonable and you don't need a 4x4 unless you're really going off road.

Room Tip: Choose one close to reception - less walking if you've had a long day or too many ccktails! Oth...

While I read the previous reviews of this hotel which for the most part were very positive, my actual experience was of being pleasantly surprised. It went beyond my expectations. Upon our arrival, we were greeted with cool damp towels and a fresh fruit drink. We were then wisked to our junior suite which held one king-size bed and a double in a large enough room to accommodate both comfortably. The large bathroom had two kinds of showers, one which was constructed to feel like you were under a waterfall and one next to it which had a conventional shower head. We enjoyed both. We had our own veranda with two rocking chairs and an outside jacuzzi which overlooked the Arenal Volcano. Yet even with the proximity of the other "villas" it felt like you had your own private space The grounds are immaculate with a variety of plants that attract hummingbirds and we even saw tucans. We met several people in the heated pool area which contains a bar which made for some delightful conversations. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. My husband needed to use a computer and they one available to him at no cost. We had a problem with our safe and they came right away and fixed it. The quality and quantity food at the restaurant was superb and very fresh. You felt as though you were eating at a high end restuarant, even during breakfast which is included in the stay. One of the things that really surprised me was that it was an open air restuarant and there were no bugs! We stayed there only two nights and wished it was longer.

Room Tip: While we didn't mind the short walk to the restuarant, if walking is an issue, I would request a...

This hotel is very nice. The rooms are large and the showers are interesting complete with tree frogs. Every room has a view of the volcano when the sky is clear. The free shuttle to and from town is grat (too far to walk) and the staff can arrange any local tour you want. They may charge a small amount more than you can get in town but very little considering the convenience. The very best part is the very friendly helpful staff. There are only two draw backs here that I would mention. First: the supper menu is full of amazing pictures of thigs they do not make and often what they do make is not aviaable. The food that is available is below average for the area and quite expensive. Second: the small hot water pool with the swim up bar is very cloudy. Many people sit in it drinking for hours on end (remiiniicent of a large toilet).

We arrived in transport from San Jose hot and tired and there was the desk clerk with a basked of hot towels and we were checked in and taken to our room with bags in a cart. The room was large, but not the junior suite, there was no place to sit and read except outside, but the rockers outside were very comfortable. The grounds are very beautiful and the plantings are well thought out but the property is very steep. The staff was WONDERFUL about meeting our needs during our 6 night stay. They arranged terrific tours, hauled us up to our room when we were too tired to walk, served us very good food and were always smiling and happy to respond, even when facing issues from others or large groups. Their tour guides, particularly Johann, were very fun. They also have a van to take guests to La Fortuna and back periodically throughout the day and their van driver was delightful.

The owner is a very intelligent and pleasant man who actually pitches in to drive the van or do whatever needs to be done if there is no one else available. How impressive is that!

Room Tip: Do not go to this hotel or for that matter to Costa Rica if you are going to complain about bugs. T...

Paradise! We brought our 9 year old son here and did zip lining during the day which was truly an amazing experience...but could easily have just stayed back at the (very warm) pool with the swim up bar and relaxed all day :)

The bungalos are nice, the grounds are beautiful. We stayed 2 nights, wished we'd stayed a few more.

Let me start with the positives of the hotel. The grounds are lovely, with many flowering plants and bushes, which attract tons of butterflies and hummingbirds. We were able to capture some great closeup images of both from our casita patio. The view of Arenal volcano was fantastic as well. It's nice that the hotel is a little off the beaten path and not on the main drag in town.

When we first arrived at the hotel, the front desk clerk was not at the front desk, but rather busy helping a larger group of people arrange a tour in the lobby area. We literally had to wait 25 minutes for someone to acknowledge us and check us in. I understand being busy, but maybe they should have more than one person at the desk during peak checkin hours. Once we got checked in we found out that the bellman was off tending to others as well, so we hauled our own luggage all the way to the back of the property to our casita. Not a huge deal, but we were kind of tired after driving several hours to get there.

The casita itself was spacious but the front door didn't close properly so we had to immediately call for maintenance to come and fix it. At least it was fixed quickly, which we did appreciate. The room's decor was a bit dated. The bathroom, while large, was a strange space with a regular shower and a secondary waterfall-style shower complete with fake rocks and live plants dangling down into your personal space. Weird.

We ate dinner in the restaurant the first night and we were fairly underwhelmed. My tilapia was overcooked and my husband's steak was a tad tough. Breakfasts in the restaurant were better; buffet style but a decent selection.

We stayed 3 nights there but in hindsight felt that we probably should have stayed one night and moved on. There is plenty to do in the area, but Mountain Paradise was just not our favorite place to stay.

The best part of this place is the property. It's gorgeous! Flowers and hummingbirds everywhere but they do such a great job of maintaining the grounds as well. The rooms are large and everything worked fine. My only complaint is how thin the walls are. The rest of our family complained about large insects in the rooms but it is after-all, in the rain-forest! So if bugs aren't your thing (like me) then just do what I did and close all the small windows in the room asap.
The staff in the restaurant were some of the best, they were genuinely happy and so good with children! I read some reviews before going that made the food sound terrible which it wasn't true. The breakfast was huge, had a lot of variety, and tasted great. We stayed over New Years and had their dinner which was very nice too.
This part of Costa Rica is about adventure so make sure to zip line and walk some trails as it creates such a fantastic and fun experience. Small children might get a little bored since many of the activities aren't meant for them. A lot of wildlife around though to keep their attention.
I would definitely recommend to others and go back myself. Thank you everyone at Hotel Paradise!
