“Excellent service with a beautiful volcanic view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

My friend and I booked this hotel through a tour package we bought online. Little did we know that this hotel would be great!

Upon arrival, we were late in checking in due to our flight delays and long drive into the night from San Jose. The receptionist greeted us and immediately checked us in. He gave us a room on the first floor, which I will admit was a disappointment for both of us. The balcony door was wide open and the room didn't feel clean. It had a musty smell. We asked if we could get another room, but since we were the last to check in, no other rooms were available but the suites.

However, the next day, the same receptionist asked if we had changed rooms. When I said that we hadn't, he made arrangements for us to get another room. He placed us into one of the junior suites on the third floor, which completely blew our minds! It had a view that overlooked the beautiful pool, gardens and faced the volcano. It was truly picture perfect. Not only was the room much cleaner and larger, but there was even a jacuzzi in the room. We were ecstatic and so grateful!

Based on this impression, I was really impressed by how accommodating the hotel staff was. We enjoyed the other two days by the swim up bar. The service was a little slow and crowded during happy hours, but wonderfully relaxing. It was a great place to wind down and enjoy the scenery.

Also, we enjoyed the hot buffet breakfast each morning. The ham and fresh fruits were particular good!

Room Tip: Book a room on the second or third floors!

The staff at the hotel are very friendly and the rooms are nice. The location is a few minutes drive to the town and walking distance to some restaurants. The pool is very nice and the hotel is quite clean.

We got to the hotel around 7:30 PM after driving 3 hours from San Jose airport. We couldn't really see much since it was raining and it was already dark. We were able to check in quickly with their prompt service. The next morning, when I went out to the balcony I was completely stunned by the view. The pictures and reviews I saw and read online before coming to Costa Rica looked this but the view was even better in person. The view was facing directly to the Arenal volcano mountain and it was outstanding. Our service was also outstanding and we loved the location. When we go back to La Fortuna, we definitely plan on staying here again.

What an incredible view to wake up to every morning. This hotel is situated at the base of the Arenal Volcano. The setting is quiet and serene. The hotel staff is very friendly, and most are bilingual, speaking Spanish and English fluently. The town center is within walking distance, and the area's attractions are accessible by rental car or by pre-arranged transportation. We were in Costa Rica for 7 days and spent half of our time at the Hotel Magic Mountain. In hindsight, we wish we had spent ALL of our time here. The breakfast buffet is so delicious! You can choose from a variety of fresh fruit, pastries, hot items, cereals and even traditional Costa Rican dishes like fried plantains or beans and rice. There's so much to do and see in La Fortuna! Fabulous location and beautiful vistas. We made memories that will last a lifetime. In the words of our teenage daughters, "Best. Trip. Ever."

Room Tip: Believe it or not, the best views can be found from the ground floor. The hotel's beautiful land...

The hotel was very quiet and serene. The view from our balcony was amazing. Our balcony overlooked the pool and the beautiful gardens around the pool and we could see the volcano as well (only parts of the volcano when it wasn't cloudy). It was extremely quiet at the hotel, perhaps because we stayed there during the rainy season. The rooms were average but clean. My biggest complaint about the room is the bed. It was horrible. I woke up everyday feeling stiff. The food in the hotel restaurant was okay. Breakfast was much better than dinner. Our dinner was below average but the service was impeccable. The waitors in the restaurant were so kind, gracious, and polite. Franciny, the swim up bartender was really kind and funny too! She even taught us some Spanish while we enjoyed drinks and a snack at the swim up bar. The hotel bar was empty. In fact, most of the hotel seemed to be empty although the staff at the hotel told us the hotel was fully booked. If you are looking for a place to enjoy the pool and sun this is probably not the right place to stay in Costa Rica. It was pretty cloudy and overcast while we were there. If you are looking for a nice, quiet place to stay while you enjoy all the adventures Costa Rica has to offer than this hotel is pretty good.

Our stay was July 28-30th 2012. Great location, very clean rooms, comfortable beds. The staff was very helpful in booking extra excursions and getting us extra items for the room as needed. The breakfast buffet consisted of eggs, rice/beans (which was great), potato's, sausage, pancakes, cereal, granola, toast and fresh fruit ( watermelon, pineapple and papaya) The juice was some kind of orange mixed drink, ok tasting, but we stuck to the water. The water by the way is so refreshing to taste. We started out buying bottled water, but soon realized we we're missing out by not drinking their water. The dinner buffet, was over priced and didn't look appealing. We ate dinner in town. The views of Arenal Volcano were awesome. It did rain off and on most of our stay, but we did get one day the clouds cleared away and we got to see the entire volcano. We went to the Arenal hanging bridges, I highly recommend going, but if you have a car go on your own. The restaurant at the bridges is great. We also did white water rafting with Wave Expeditions, so, so, so much fun!!!!! A must do!! Ask for Carlos to be your guide. If your driving from San Jose be prepared for a beautiful drive. GPS with your car is a must have, do not attempt with out the GPS. The roads are not marked. The drive took us about 4 hours, the roads are very windy through the mountains and only two lanes.

We stayed at Magic Mountain hotel in April, 2012. We arrived at Liberia airport and drove to La Fortuna (the drive, according to my boyfriend was like being in a video game); by the time we got in, it was late night and we were given a room on the first floor overlooking the pool...we were tired and a little disappointed as in our mind there was no way that our room had a view of the volcano. As soon as we opened the balcony on the next day we were happily surprised to see the volcano right outside our window!!!
Breakfast was included and it is average... for the night time, there is a bar a couple of places down the road called "el vagabundo" which was decent; although the music was a bit loud for our taste.
The best part of our stay at the hotel was hanging out with Francini at the pool bar!! She is the most down to earth, real person in the place. She was very welcoming and helpful, she told us where to eat and hangout, where to visit etc. She always had a smile on her face !!
While we stayed at La Fortuna, we went zip lining with EcoGlide (we booked through the hotel) and horseback riding in the afternoon (we booked this and all other excursions with a little tour agency in the heart of LaFortuna on the first right off the main road once you enter the heart of town- the prices were much better than booking through the hotel).
We also did rafting with CostaRicaDescends-this is a must! Our guide, Tony-the-Tiger was amazing! Rappelling we did with Desafio and it's also worth it.
Overall the place is centrally located in La Fortuna and while I do not believe it is inexpensive, we did not feel ripped-off. If you do visit, please let Francini know that her friends from New York say hi!
