“So wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2012

It was beautiful, the staff was AMAZING, the room and facilities were clean and up to date, and of course the view was spectacular (especially when the clouds lifted). Interaction with the animals was fun, and horse back riding is a must. We saw more birds from our porch and at breakfast than anywhere else on our trip.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Coco Cabin, and it was beautiful, comfortable and perfect. We had toucans greet us...

My husband and I spent 6 nights at this incredible place and cannot wait to return. After reading the glowing reviews, expectations were set very high... once we arrived, the reality surpassed all expectations. There is something about this place that cannot really be described in words... it is something that you feel once you are there. You are immersed natural, pristine beauty. I will never forget the first morning I woke up in the Volcano cabin and looked out the huge windows. The view was breathtaking ,it was one of those moments in time where you would not want to be anywhere else on earth. The photos you see online do not do it justice... it is something you have to experience. Besides the obvious incredible natural beauty, you are surrounded by warm people who really care about their guests. Steve and Debbie( owners) and all of their staff make you feel so welcome, as if you were a friend or family member coming to visit, not just a tourist.
One of the big reason's we chose L&L's was because of their horses and the rides they offer. My husband and I are horse people... we have horses at home and practically spend more time in the saddle than on the ground! The idea of riding in Costa Rica was a dream. We were not disappointed. The guides, who are also great horseman, took us on the rides of our life! We experienced a part of Costa Rican that that most visitors will never get to see… primary rainforest, rural villages and even a visit to a local dairy farm! The horses were wonderful ... My husband and I had the opportunity to ride their Costa Rican gaited “Criollo” horses. We were very impressed with these horses… they were incredibly sure footed, had amazing endurance and energy but were gentle and calm all at the same time. I was also very happy to see that Debbie (a horsewoman herself) is incredibly conscientious of the well being of her horses and has taken great measures to introduce “natural horsemanship” to the local community… she has done a tremendous job of improving the welfare of the horses in the area… she has several rescue horses that are in the process of being rehabilitated. They have also created a therapeutic riding program for local people with disabilities. This is the kind of people they are... they not only have a wonderful resort, but they also give back to the local community and the environment. It was refreshing to find a place where you know that your dollars are going to the right place...
Lastly, I cannot forget to mention the food… hands down the best we had in Costa Rica.
We can’t say enough great things about L&L’s … there is something here for everybody. We cannot wait to return and do one of their treks on horseback!

We just got back and had an incredible experience!

Just go here and allow it to happen. This is the kind of place that is so genuine that you just fall in love over a few short days. The owners and staff are all committed to making your experience incredible and it shows. If you are used to phony, patronizing hotels, restaurants and resorts this will be a welcome change.

We are a family of four - Mom, Dad and two boys 16 and 12. We visited the animal rescue, took a horseback ride to the waterfall/swimming hole, and zip lined in La Fortuna. Every day was great, especially the horseback ride to the waterfall. Great horses and guides made the day very special.

Our cabin was great. Plenty of room for the four of us. Porch was huge and had awesome view.

On our horseback ride we came across a sloth hanging out in someone's yard. The guides picked him up and we were able to have an up close and personal visit. Very cool.

Overall highly recommended!

Leaves and Lizards met our expectations on how challenging the road is near the end, but exceeded our expectations for the hospitality, food quality, natural beauty and peacefulness.

One tip is to plan a stop in La Fortuna or at a canopy tour on the way to Leaves and Lizards. We left San Jose in the morning and we stopped at the Mundo Adventura canopy tour for lunch and the 1:30 p.m. canopy tour -- which was fantastic. By breaking up the trip, we were able to have a fun experience in the afternoon and it helped in feeling that we didn't spend most of the first day getting to Leaves and Lizards, like some other people who we talked with when we arrived.

Once we were at Leaves and Lizards, we wished that we didn't have to leave. The food was excellent and my wife and I enjoyed the healthy aspects of the menu. We have teenagers who can be picky about food, but they really enjoyed the food -- especially the breakfasts. At dinner, there was a handmade pizza available if there wasn't something on the menu that they wanted.

We had a wonderful time on the horse ride to the waterfall. Swimming in the natural pool was the highlight of my trip. While the horses are gentle, there is one open area on the way back where they want to run briefly unless you let the guide know that you don't want the horses to run. We were also able to see a sloth on the ride.

Our kids were able to milk a cow and collect eggs for the first time. We also enjoyed the morning nature hike with Oscar and his evening talk.

Overall, my family had a wonderful experience and we would definitely return to Leaves and Lizards.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Tucan Cabin, but all the cabins in that area are very private and have good views.

Debbie, Steve and their staff really know how to make your stay comfortable and memorable. The cabin we had (Mariposa) was very clean, cozy and decorated with Steve's artwork. Breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano from throughout the property. Dining facility with huge open side toward the volcano, and feeders to attract birds. Great food, and nice to eat meals with other guests and compare experiences. There were many activity options, and we highly recommend the horseback and nature tours. It's about 20 minutes outside of La Fortuna, but that is an advantage. You will not be disappointed if you stay at Leaves and Lizards!

We spent 3 nights at Leaves and Lizards. Excellent guide on Rio Frio kayaking trip. Horseback tour to waterfall fun. Very impressed with the owner's care of the horses. All meals were excellent, with good choices. This is a great place for families. Debbie did a fantastic job arranging airport pickup and transport to our next stop in Monteverde. We were three adults, and did not need a car. The rooms are spacious, attractive, with great porches to hang out and watch the humming birds. I'd definitely go back.

Thank you Trip Advisor for leading us to Leaves and Lizards. Almost every family we met found this place on Trip Advisor. We stayed for seven days in March 2012 with our six year old daughter. Nice to have seven days. We were able to do optional excursions in the morning and relax in Monkey cabin in the afternoons. Our favorite excursions were 1. Horseback ride to the water fall, 2. Visit at the animal rescue center. The food at Leaves and Lizards is good, but the main reason to eat here is the chance to meet the other guests and compare notes and share stories. If you have a car, be sure to have lunch or dinner at Don Rafino in La Fortuna. The food was wonderful. In fact, we prefer Don Rafino to most any place we have tried in Massachusetts.
We enjoyed the hanging bridges and Eco Therme hot springs, but these are "tour bus" destinations, so they are a lower priority. We heard raves about the white water rafting and zip linning, but we felt that these were too challenging for our six year old.
Steve and Debbie, the owners, are the reason Leaves and Lizards is so special. They were always available and helpful. We both admire and envy what they have created. Disney World and the like are great, but going to Leaves and Lizards is like visiting friends.
