Like everyone else we read the great reviews and didn't want our expectations to be too high. However, all the reviews are correct. Silencio del Campo was fabulous. Great location. The cabins were well kept, comfortable, and a unique change from the typical wall-to-wall hotel rooms. Breakfast was great. The most important aspect of staying at Silencio was the staff. Not being familiar with the area, we were in need of advice and recommendations. They went out of their way to help, made calls on our behalf, and gave us great suggestions. The owners were always available. As mentioned by others, the only complaint was the construction next door, which did begin rather early and continued into the evening. However, it was not too loud inside the cabins and we were out and about most of the day.

As for day trips in La Fortuna, we highly recommend Desafio. The Toro rafting trip is great, as was the canyoneering trip, although I wouldn't suggest it for young children and elderly. The La Fortuna waterfall was pretty. However, although the trail gave a decent short work out, the waterfall is all that there is to see there. Still, it is probably worth the trip if you are there for 3+ days.

After reading the glowing reviews on tripadvisor I decided that I want to stay at the el silencio during my vacation to la fortuna, unfortunately; this never took place...

I set up the arrangements to stay, price of stay, etc.. with the owner carlos and everything was fine. I was going to send my reservation form back to the hotel to confirm my reservation; but I checked my e-mail and someone named maria from the hotel had sent me another different rate from what I was quoted 2 days before. Instead of being 92US it was now going to be 119US. That is a big difference in my mind, so I e-mailed them back to find out why they would not honer the first price which was listed as correct on their own hotel website.

They sent me another e-mail telling me that was the price now and did I still want a reservation. I felt like this was some sort of bait and switch tecnique and in no way felt safe staying at a hotel that came up with their prices depending on how much money they could get from me, or maybe because I was not a native costa rican?

I DID stay in another hotel in Lafortuna while on my trip and had a great time, and I am glad el silencio did not work out, because the place is right next to a mega-resort which is in the process of being completed and looks about 50% done. I am sure the noise sucks for now, but I might try and make reservations there in the future as the building is quite tall and I am sure the views will be amaing.

This was my first trip to Costa Rica. I was there in early December for 2 days. The hotel was very nice. The rooms were large and with each room separate there was a real sense of privacy. The view of the hotel was great, but the clouds prevented us from seeing the top of the volcano. The location was great for going to excursions either to Fortuna or the canopy tours or the hanging bridges.
The staff was extremely nice and very helpful. They helped us arrange accommodations, excursions, and travel. We were even greeted with a frozen fruit drink.

The down side for this location is the construction. A large hotel is building right next door and the construction started by 7 am and went until after dark at 6. Night was extremely quiet, however. While the breakfast and restaurant are nice, the food would be rated only at at an average. It was sufficient, but nothing to write home about.

All in all a very pleasant stay. I would recommend it and would stay there again, although it will be much nicer when construction is finished.

Based on reviews, and the location we found that Hotel Silencio del Campo was by far the "best" in La Fortuna! From the reception to the farewell. We stayed in #3, which to me had a fantastic view of the volcano (which by the way we only saw 20 minutes of). It was centrally located to basically everything we wanted to do. Some things we didn't get to do, because of driving distance, but we'll save that for another trip! This is a family run business, and they are a diamond in my opinion. They recommended trips, with shuttle service right from our hotel, to my favorite meal "Talipia On the Vapor", and Tico breakfasts.
A fantastic stay, and we will go back!
