“No water and poor air”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

Our travel agent booked us here for 3 nights this past Christmas Holiday. Upon arrival we were aware that it was a very basic, minimal place, however we had no idea how uncomfortable and primitive it was. Lighting in the rooms is horrible, towels and sheets, very thin and old. Bed, sloped and poor mattress. No furniture except for a portable refrigerator. We came back from a day trip and there was No running water at all. The air-conditioner in our room, turned it self off every 20 minutes. When we asked for another room, they were of no help. The breakfast was poor and no wi-fi, except for the office, which was closed early. In addition there are no safes in the room to lock your valuables. Our stay was so bad we stayed only one night and moved to another location in town which for another $100 was night and day difference, complete with natural hot springs.
Surprised other ratings were so high, the local authenticity did not make up for it lacking the basics. Can not recommend.

Room Tip: why do you have to ask for a room with hot water, shouldn't all rooms have hot water?

Good value for the money paid. Gardens and view are amazing.
Downside: no hot water in some rooms. I was told the water heater works using solar panels, which don't work well during cloudy days. Make sure your room has 24-hr hot water.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a room with hot water 24 hrs. Some rooms don't always have hot water.

Owner Daisy and her family run the property management, very friendly people and extremely helpful in advising and guiding us all thru our stay. The property has a very good view of the Volcano and convenient to town. The garden and the pool are maintained very well and reflect the tropical feel of Costa Rica and Arenal area very well. The room was very basic, no telephone or internet in the room, basic amenities and bathroom accessories. Could hear the rain, water, bugs and outside noise all night. Wireless was available in the office area only. Access to the property was thru an unpaved road. Breakfast was served hot eggs, pancakes, fruit slices and beans/rice with juice and coffee. Towels smelled like toasted bread and stale.

Great price. We paid about 80 a night. The cabins are great. Service just fantastic. All the tour guides loved it because the family that owns it is local. You feel welcome. The only downsides is the English level odd the staff is not the best... But go there and help make it better! This will new a great place for a long time. The garden is great for morning bird watching. Keep doing a fantastic job

Room Tip: They are all cabins and great

This is not your typical hotel. Individual cabanas. The grounds are spectacular with a direct view of the volcano. The owners are on site and work hard to make your stay great. Very pleasant, willing to chat and they understand customer service. Very clean . The grounds are a birding and floral experience. There is great value for the price- even includes a great breakfast. I will be recommending this place to all our friends.

We felt like being home. The service was outstanding and so was the food (very tasty). It is managed by its owner and she takes time to seat and chat with every guest. She guided us to the best local tours. We like to travel a lot and we had never receive this great attention that's why we took a moment to write this. It has a panoramic view to the volcano and a very pretty landscaping.

Arenal Montechiari is a GREAT little hotel so close to the center of La Fortuna. It's an easy 400 meter walk from the hotel to the town, so there's no need to pay for a long taxi ride like with many of the other hotels in the area. If you do choose to take taxis back and forth, they only cost $2 or 1000 colones, very cheap! The cabin that we stayed in was perfect; very basic, but very clean and meets all necessities, including very nice hot water. Bring an alarm clock though!

The property was beautiful. Although very close to the center of La Fortuna, the way the property and cabins were arranged with the garden made it seem very secluded in a peaceful way. The garden is gorgeous, maintained with love every day by the gardeners, who are all so friendly. The breakfast every morning is very good, served at whatever time you need for the activities you have planned.

The seating area for breakfast (and the garden) has a FANTASTIC view of Arenal Volcano. Be sure to sit at a table where you are facing the Volcano!!

The staff is so helpful; the manager, Mayid, personally helped us continue planning the rest of our trip, which we had left somewhat open ended. He recommended a great tour for us, arranged it, and even helped set up through the tour service a transportation of ourselves and our luggage to the next hotel we had in Arenal region. Even once we left La Fortuna and travelled all the way to Monteverde and Jáco beach, he continued to make sure things worked out smoothly. Also, as we were walking into town one evening for dinner, two of the staff were about to leave for the evening and they offered us a ride into town! So friendly.

Stay here if you have the chance! Best location, services, and experience.
