We were pleasantly surprised by the size and comfort of our room (room 12). When we arrived, we expected little, especially because the lobby was not impressive - it's small and looks like a tourist agency. However, the room turns out to be spacious, clean, and with simple but acceptable decoration. (We got room 12, which is at the very back next to the river. We had a passing glance at other rooms, and it seems that room 12 is bigger and best situated if you want privacy.) And the price is right (We paid $75 per night for a room with 2 queen sized beds.)
Although it is nothing fancy, the hotel is very convenient for the village/town of La Fortuna. The ground of the hotel is charming - much better looking than the lobby might suggest. There is a river running through the back of the hotel, very cool. There is a small pool, although we didn't feel like using it at all because La Fortuna was cloudy most of the time.
We considered a few other more expensive hotels but they are on the outskirt of the town, which means we won't have easy access to the restaurants. Although La Fortuna does not have very good restaurant options, given how small it is, Hotel Monte Real is at a great location for accessing everything LA Fortuna has to offer. It is at the edge of the 2x2 block town center, which means it is quieter at night, but you can easily walk the 2 blocks to any restaurant. The owners are friendly locals.
