“A dream of a place just outside of La Fortuna. One night is not enough!”
This place is so unbelievable, and was easily the highlight of our Costa Rica trip! We stayed for only one night, but to really appreciate it you need at least two to three.
Located a fair distance outside of La Fortuna, the "hotel" is situated on a large jungle property, surrounded by lush vegetation and tons of wildlife. The five or so tree-houses are spaced a short distance apart, but far enough to give off a nice secluded feeling (especially in the midst of all that vegetation). The houses are all a short walk to the main building, which is flocked by hummingbirds at the many feeders and has a really rustic feel. The live-in American couple who manage the property were super-friendly and welcoming, and happy to answer any question or provide any service you require. There is a marked lack of restaurants or attractions in the direct vicinity, though the staff recommend a nearby restaurant that apparently serves excellent Costa Rican fare. The restaurant was closed for renovations during our visit, so the staff recommended a local pizza joint that can deliver to the main house, which was tasty and more than sufficient!
The property is huge, and offers two beautiful walks of approximately 3km down to the local waterfall and river, which were a great way to kill time. There is so much wildlife in Costa Rica and the property was no exception! We spotted two different sloths (one with a baby!)during our 24hr trip, and countless beautiful birds.
We only stayed one night, and possibly due to this we were given the house closest to the road (I think it was the Frog house), even though we booked near a year in advance and specifically requested a different house. It is true what the other reviews say- the road noise is extremely loud and really does affect the ambiance of the place. This was the only negative thing about our stay, but it did take away a bit from the serenity of staying in a jungle tree-house. Still, it was beautiful to sit and read on the balcony of our tree-house, scanning the trees for sloths and other wildlife!
The tree-house itself was great. The aforementioned balcony was spacious and well-decked, with a few chairs, a large table and some outdoor lights. The interior had many nice touches, like air-conditioning, a clean and modern bathroom with hot showers, and comfortable double bed and two twin beds in the loft, lots of storage space and a bar fridge/safe.
The best thing about this place, though, were the wonderful little touches offered by the hotel. When you check in you're asked if you like coffee, and in the morning you wake to a flask of hot coffee and some freshly-baked (delicious!) banana bread on your doorstep! Such a wonderful touch. The traditional breakfast was absolutely delicious, and served in an outdoor setting that is surrounded by fresh fruit left out to attract the stunning local birds. The hotel offers a night walk option with the local security man, which we did not take advantage of due to a bout of food-poising, but we heard our fellow guests enjoying the walk for a good few hours.
When we were there the American owner was visiting (I can't for the life of me remember her name), and we found her to be SUCH a delight! We'd arranged for a jeep-boat-jeep trip to Monteverde, and when the company screwed up our booking and did not arrive she went to our defence and forced them to make a special trip, just for us! The company staff on our journey were clearly not impressed with having to go to so much effort for just two people, so we really appreciated that she fought so hard for us to get to our next location on time! While waiting we sat and chatted for a good hour about her previous life and seachange, and the time flew by. She was awesome!
We would highly recommend this place to people, and would tell them to stay for at least two nights, if not three. One just wasn't enough to do this awesome hotel justice! The peaceful setting is just what you need, after the craziness of La Fortuna!
Room Tip: Stay longer than one night, and really do ask for a house away from the road! We stayed just one nig...
