“A Room With A View. Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

After staying in southern Costa Rica at a beach resort, we traveled by van and ferry up the mountains to the Kioro Resort at the foot of the Arenal Volcano. It was a long day on the road through some beautiful country, and then what a place. Kioro sits in the foothills of the volcano. Everything is wonderful about this property. All the rooms have a great view of the volcano. Waking up in the morning there may be clouds on the summit or it may be clear. Either way it's a gorgeous sight. Walking down the winding pathways to the pool, the hot springs, the dining or to the lobby is an experience. Flowering and ornamental plants of all kinds including Bamboo Orchids my favorite. Every room has a inside hot tub, bathrobes and an extra day bed for lounging. We were able to get the U. S. college bowl games on the TV, but the dialog was in Spanish. An interesting way to enjoy the games. Breakfast was included with an excellent selection of local foods. Lunch was something light around the pool or in the town about 15 minutes away by taxi. The town provides an excellent opportunity for different foods and some shopping. There are all day tours of the volcano area. We only took a half day rafting trip down a lazy river. It wasn't worth the effort; the only dissapointment of our Arenal stay. If you are planning on going to the Arenal area, you should thoroughly research the tour opportunites. Some of them can be physically challenging. Many of the ornamental landscaping plants we see in the U.S. come from farms in this area. When driving through the rolling hills we saw fields of them. New Year's Eve the resort had a special dinner accompanied by live music. A terrific fireworks display followed. The San Jose airport is about 3 hours away by van. Our driver stopped on the way at a couple of road side stands where be bought gifts and interesting local snacks. While there is no night life at the resort, a trip into town can serve that purpose. Otherwise Kioro is a feast for the mind and body. A beautiful, relaxing place. Definitely 5-star.

Room Tip: The are numbered in the hundreds (100, 500, etc).. If you don't want to walk up hills, get the...

This was our third fantastic stay at Arenal Kioro. Our first stay was last year with our
\Granddaughter Erika Koepsel and her boyfriend from Chicago Illinois, then we stayed
again with our Secretary and her husband, Susan and Ron Cramer, from Fort Lauderdale,
Florida and this time was for a very special Christmas & Birthday treat to our Grandson, Kevin
Koepsel and his college friend, Joe Scariot from St. Louis, Missouri, enjoyed their very first
trip to Costa Rica, just before they graduate from the University of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio,
to end their "student experiences" and begin their working careers. On their very first trip
to Costa Rica of course, they wanted first to visit the famous Arenal Volcano, where you simply
cannot get a better or closer view than from the Arenal Kioro Hotel where you can just relax in
your in-room hot tub and look right out the window at this magnificent volcano scene. And
then it is a fairly short ride over to Sky Trek for the fantastic ride up over the Jungle to do the
Zip-Line. Then one can stay and enjoy, as we did lunch at the "Chill Out Bar & Restaurant with
another close up view of the Volcano and some wonderful luncheon treats. The pool areas,
the outdoor dining space, the Gazebo, the Hot Springs, The Spa and Gym are just a few of the
special treats in store for you when you stay at Arenal Kioro.

The Staff here is the absolute best, from the Manager right on down to waiters, spa attendees,
cooks, Front Desk Concierge, hotel maids and on and on and on......they are all just outstanding.
We especially want to make note of the lovely and accomodating your lady who will fix you
special omlets upstairs in the breakfast dining room in the morning and the wonderful cook
who prepares lunches and snacks down at the pool area, who without a doubt makes the most
wonderful Quessadilla's you have ever eaten before in your entire life! (No kidding.)

So next time you are traveling in Costa Rica and want to stay at the very best place in
Arenal, make certain you book the Arenal Kioro.

Room Tip: There is no such thing as a bad room here - they are all two room suites on either the first or sec...

Loved this hotel. The wall facing the volcano was all glass and opened most of the way. The hot tub in the room was a plus. We could watch the volcano erupt while sitting in hot tub, eating our fabulous room service dinner or while laying in bed. What a wonderful natural fireworks display! The hotel was also only a short drive to the Tabacon hot springs.

I've been at Arena Kioro for 2 nights and I can say that the hotel is very nice. Rooms are big, confortable and very clean, with an amazing view on the Vulcano Arenal.
Not at a 5 stars level breakfast and restaurant, where plates are normal, but the enviroment is not pleasant (it seems a big self service restaurant also if service is very nice).

Thermal area is nice, but not incredible as the one at the near Hotel Tabacon (where access is open also to people not staying at the hotel).

Dear Friend!

Thanks a lot for your comments and we are very happy knowing that you enjoyed our rooms and view to the Volcano.
We apologize for not meeting your expectations during breakfast time, our breakfast is a buffet with variety on food from Costa Rican Gallo pinto, different cheeses, pastries, fruits, and fresh omelets and more, but it is self service. We apologize for the inconvenient.
Our hot springs are natural, they come from a spring that is heated by a volcanic rock, underground, our hot springs are private only for the enjoyment of our guest and they are included in the rate, we are glad you enjoy them as well.

Thank you again for your comments, this will help us improve and give a better service, we hope you may come back in the future.

We had 3 perfect days at this hotel. The room was around 40sqm and we had our own hottub with a greit view over the volcano. We spent one day at the hotel area and one day zip-lining, which of both was very nice. We also tried the spa, and had a very good and proffesional experience there.

The only thing that takes it down from excellent to very good was the restaurant. We had expected more from a restaurant at a 5star hotel. The food was ok, but nothing more I`m afraid.

Still we can highly recommend a stay at this hotel!

Room Tip: It looks like all the rooms have the same breathtaking view.

The Kioro is a 5 star hotel, with a conservation plan which they carry out with pride. The Arenales volcan can be seen from all the common areas of the hotel. It has it own beautifully landscaped thermal springs with heated waters from the volcano. Very private and quiet, and impeccable service. We had perfect unobstructed view of the volcano from the room (and lucky to have a clear day, because it seems the volcano is often covered by clouds). This is the perfect place to spend some days if you want total relaxation and conection with nature. I loved it!

Room Tip: Suite 115 is private with the best view of the volcano.

We stayed as part of a Backroads tour for two nights. Had dinner and lunch at the hotel and both were very good standard Costa Rican meals with good service. The rooms were very clean and had a great view of the volcano. The hot springs are an amazing chain of rock pools - really amazing at night. Remember, you are in the rain forest, so it can be a bit humid.

Room Tip: Higher up the hill and closer to the main building gives you a better view, but all seem pretty good...

Dear Friend!
Thank you for your comment we are glad you had a great time with us! Thanks for advising other travelers about the weather! We love the rain forest and Arenal Kioro has 12.5 hectares of forest, humidity is definitely a challenge during rainy season but despite that I am sure all our guest enjoy the beauty of the area, again thank you we hope you can visit us again in the future!
