“Luigi's Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2007

Luigi runs a tight ship at this family-run hotel and restaurant. Don't be fooled by the Italian name and food...Luigi is a tico from Monteverde, and will give you all the info you need to have a great stay in La Fortuna/Arenal. Some highlights were a hike through El Silencio rainforest park (monkeys, birds, lush fauna), zip-lining accross the canopy and looking down to see a 300m waterfall with a rainbow accross it, horsebacking riding to visit and learn about the Maleku (CR natives), hot springs at Baldi where you can watch the volcano shed lava - Luigi's is a great spot to start from. The pool is secluded amongst the rooms and a great place to cool off.

I was traveling to Fortuna from Sarapiqui and managed to get a room here by phone the night before my arrival. I payed 50$ for a room with two beds and a great view of the volcano. Rooms are clean with hot water showers. The pool is well maintained and the breakfast very decent. Staff was ok-pleasant, service also ok. Construction on an adjoining casino has taken out the gym that is described in Lonely Planet. Central location in town a plus. Door locks are rather limited in function--use the hotel safe. No safety issues during my stay.

  • Liked — Price and location
  • Disliked — Construction noise, front patio opens right onto Avenida Central trafffic

We found Luigi's by using the Frommer's Tour Book for Costa Rica. We chose Luigi's because every other place was booked that night. We paid $40 a night in November (coming to the end of low season). The accommodations were average- the book described "hostel like" and I agree. The restaurant was good and the service was great- even though we didn't speak spanish. The owner, Luigi, was there and he was a wealth of knowledge. Before he knew we were staying at his hotel, he sat with us and gave us a ton of information on how to save money and still see the best of the Arenal Volcano area. I highly recommend Luigi's if you are on a budget and aren't shy- talk to whomever you can for info. They'll help you! But.... be prepared to pay cash or use a visa. They don't take mastercard!

Tthe Lonely Planet book has this place in its "top end" section, and I thought for $70 a night it would be. It's not terrible, but just not that great. It's clean and central, good if you dont have a car, and the volcano views are excellent. The rooms and the pool are old and tired and the staff arent that helpful. Would be an ok place to stay if it was cheaper.

This place is probably one of the most expensive places in Los Fortuna. We paid $70 a night for a double room. There was no TV or fridge and there was old coffee with mold on top of it in the coffee maker…. YUCK. Other than the coffee maker, the room was ok. Big bathroom that was fairly clean. Seemed like an ok place, but I think you could do better for that price elsewhere.

BTW - You do have a great view of the volcano from your room. Be warned that on the Los Fortuna side, the volcano is covered with green trees so it doesn’t look like there’s much of a lava flow there (it didn’t spew anything during our stay).

Also, don’t eat at the attached pizza restaurant. WAY Overpriced and we thought the pizza was terrible. Goto Lava Rox café instead... cheaper and tasty.

Speaking of food, avoid Las Brasitas as well.... that was one of the worse meals I had during my stay.

If we go again, I'd stay at one of the places on the road from Los Fortuna to the Tabacon Hot Springs (the closer the better). They look a LOT nicer than the ones in town and that side of the volcano is covered in ash so you would have the best view of lava (should the volcano spew any).
