“Great Volcano View”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2006

We flew into Liberia Airport and rented a car for our trip. Takes 3+ hours to get to Lost Iguana. Roads are pot holed and mostly dirt. My husband and I spent 5 days at this hotel. Although and it is built on a steep hill it provided us with wonderful views of the volcano both day and night. They do provide a golf cart service to bring you up and down the hotel grounds but we preferred to walk. Our room was on the second floor and nicely furnished. Very islandy and clean. No problems with bugs, mold, etc. Loved our private porch with rockers provided. Pool was clean and warm. Breakfast was very good each day. We did not eat any dinners here. We ate in town "LaFortuna" which is a short drive from hotel. Took advantage of the free hiking paths around hotel. Front desk staff was happy and eager to book all our activities for us. We even got a discount for booking through them. Reasonable prices on all activities. We ventured over to Tabacon Hotel one night and although the hot springs are a treat the buffet food left much to be desired. If you're in this area make sure you visit El Novillo Restaurant and Luigi's Pizza. Both had GREAT food and reasonably priced. We would definitely go back to the Lost Iguana again without hesitation.

Spent 4 nights at Lost Iguana. Buffet breakfast provided that included a different assortment of hot & cold items each day.

Had a first floor patio/garden room with direct view of Arenal Volcano. Vegetation at resort magnificent though the garden adjacent to my patio still needed work. Too much dirt & not enough ground cover & flowers. But the grounds crew was working all of the time on the flora.

Saw a rolled-up towel that was placed outside a door on first night & new immediately that it was to keep out bugs. I recommend that you do that also. Some very large bugs indeed. on

Walking very steep all over the resort but they provide golf carts and vans that will drive you from your room to pool, restauant, etc.

Pool/bar area great under immense thatched roof. A hot pool in bar area and a cold water pool below. Bar has an happy hour from 4 - 6:00. Restaurant is open air. Food not great but o.k. Better off eating in local restaurants in La Fortuna.

Did not have a car but a driver named "Juan Carlos" became a member of our group of 6. Showed us all the sights and local restaurants that we would not frequent without a locals knowledge and recommendation. Food excellent in these restaurants.

Be prepared for bumpy roads; potholes everywhere. Heavy rains wash out roads during rainy season.

Spent the day at Baldi Hot Springs upon the recommendation of our driver. Absolutely wonderful. Like walking through the Garden of Eden. But be careful, a few of the pools very, very hot. The pool located right by the bar/restaurant area just right.

Hanging bridges about 1 mile walk from the Lost Iguana & a steep walk. The hotel does not provide any transportation to or from these bridges. However, I would not miss the hanging bridge experience. If you Also, the paths at the Hanging Bridges are narrow, steep and strenuous. If you are afraid of heights, you will not enjoy yourself.

Would definitely return to the Arenal area and to the Lost Iguana Resort. But 4 nights just enough for this location.

We just returned home from a one week stay at the Lost Iguana. Traveling with three kids can be difficult so we decided to stay in one place all week. Our rooms were beautifuly decorated and very comforatable. We saw the volcano clearly only a few mornings but saw lava flows clearly most nights. The outdoor shower was a treat, we found if you leave your lights out at night the bugs stay away. The staff were more than kind and helpful, everyday they helped us arrange many adventures from our amazing canopy tour with Sky trek to a rafting trip filled with monkeys, sloths, birds and more. The food was great, always a choice for the kids. Buffet breakfast was always good. We regret that we did not rent a car but, had no trouble getting a taxi or shuttle anywhere we need to go. It is a strenuous walk to the rooms but we appreciated the exercise. Our kids said it was the best vacation they ever had, we all would highly reccomend the Lost Iguana!

We just returned (2 days ago) from a week in costa rica and 3 nights in Lost Iguana. The resort is beautiful, the rooms are beautiful, the view from the porch breathtaking. We had a bit of a mildew smell in our room (#9) so asked to move to another room (#8) a bit better, not much. The owner was on the premises when we were there and is aware of the problem, its the drapes in the room holding moisture, so the rooms will be renovated with new curtains.
We don't agree with the reviews of the service, we found excellent service at the front desk, the golf cart ride to our room was quick and convenient and we never left a tip, the food, yes is not great, but we found that everywhere in costa rica. We enjoyed the leather rocking chairs on the porch watching the volcano and see hummingbirds fly right up to us. Very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

This is an almost new set of concrete barracks, very badly built and finished. The rooms are spacious but charmless and not functional. The walk between room and restaurant is steep down, followed by steep up. If you're not top fit, don't go. Food reminded me of Eastern Europe in the cold war. At $185 for B&B, it's bad value. The only thing going for it is the view from your balcony and from the restaurant. But it's often cloudy and the volcano is covered. There are other, much nicer places to stay in the Arenal area.

This resort is really beatiful. But I want to give an advice to people who is thinking about staying in this hotel and respond to people who posted some negative reviews. To make you stay really pleasant you have to have a car! Hotel is in 'remote' area and you have to drive to any point of inteest, except Hanging bridges ( it's very close to a hotel). Our driving experience in Costa Rica was very good. we rented a car in San Jose and drive to Fortuna via Zarcero. It is a very nice and safe drive with a good roads. If you prefer, you can hire a driver to bring you to Fortuna and rent a car in Fortuna (Alamo). We had very good experince with Alamo. They brought car to our hotel in San Jose and in 7 day they picked up this car from our hotel in Manuel Antonio. Again rent a car if you stay in Lost Iguana. Hotel itself is a new hotel with a lot of things are still 'in-progress'. It's true that restrooms do not have towel's rack, but look at the restroom itself. We were in the first floor room and it has such a beatiful shower under open air - it's an art. You will appreciate it and will forget about amall things.
We walked through Lost Iguana resort beatiful trails while it was a strong rain, but we are in rain forest anyway. It's true that food in a resaurant is not perfect, but breakfast was very good, and we were buying some fresh food in the supermarket and went to small local restaurans. I should mention a view from the room. We have a few sunny mornings and when we woke up. we just stay for 30 minutes on the deck and watch a volcano. It's true that we did not have hot water two times and we called front desk and they brought propan tank immediately ( 10 minutes) and watch a volcano while we wait. Frankly speaking we stayed in a shower much longer that usially because it is a beatiful bathroom and we use all hot water :), so will you. If you are looking for privacy, it a place for you. We stayed for 4 days in Lost Iguana and spent our days walking in Arenal National park, Hanging Bridges, Lost Iguana trails, drive around the lake. We had a really good trip on the river - hotel recommended it it was great. At night we drove to Baldi Hot spring and Tabacom - very good place to relax after hiking. My wife and me are still under impression of this resort. If you can, reserve a suite with jacuzi, it cost $50 more than a standard room, but it worth it. If you have any questions, e-mail to me.

We just got back from Lost Iguana. We took the boat over Lago Arenal and it was a short van ride to the resort. As soon as we turned into the drive, my son said that we should have stayed here the whole week, and that was in the rain! We couldn't see the volcano for two days, but we really enjoyed watching the hummingbirds play in the flowering bushes at the edge of our terrace. We had two adjoinging rooms, one large "suite" with a king bed, open air shower with two heads, open air jacuzzi and terrace, and the other with 2 double beds and large bathroom. It also had a terrace. Both rooms had mini-fridges stocked with expensive, but not outrageously priced drinks. In response to the previous review, We had no bug problem at all. Our tub filled up in a normal amount of time. The hill is steep, but shuttles are available, and I didn't tip the drivers, since it seemed like a necessity for my 80 year old mother. (The younger members of our group preferred walking up and down). There is a beautiful two-tiered pool, the upper one is hot and includes a swim up bar with stools under a bit of cover, so enjoyable in the rain.

The location may be more remote, but it was beautiful. We hiked up the hill to the suspension bridge ring in the rainforest(tickets purchased at a discounted price from the resort reception). Dinners were average, but breakfast and lunch were delicious. The hotel helped us get reservations at the lovely, quiet and relaxing Ecothermales hot springs, where we were greeted by a howling monkey and toucans, enjoyed four levels of warm pools and afterwards had a perfect local meal, serenaded by the frogs. We had fun, even in the off and on rain. I woke up at 3am on our last night. the clouds had cleared and the steam and lava were clearly visible. I ran and woke up everyone to see. Our last morning was clear and sunny, what a view! I'd return in a minute!
