“Best part of our Costa Rican trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

My boyfriend and I stayed here during the second week of August. This place was amazing! I loved that it was farther out from the tourist trap that is La Fortuna. There were lots of places to hike around the property and see wildlife and amazing plants. The beautiful gardens were set up not just to look amazing but to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. The view of Arenal was spectacular. We almost didn't want to leave our porch, the view was so fabulous. We felt like we were in the jungle, a truly unique experience. Alex at the front desk was personable and gave good tips as to what to do. They offered plenty of excursions and helped set everything up for us. We did have a car, which was helpful as the location is further from the town, but most excursions had transportation so was not necessary. The restaurant was fairly good, with the breakfast buffet being the best meal. I highly recommend the fruit and fruit juices- so unbelievably fresh! Great service, wonderful setting. Can't wait to go back!!

Room Tip: We loved our garden level room- couldn't see the road with the garden in between which added to...

This "hotel" was more than I expected. It was a 4 hour drive from San Jose but worth it. We were in a bungalow in the farthest back of the facility with an awesome view of the volcano. Usually you can see the top of the volcano only a few days the whole year and we saw it 3 out of four even during rainy season. We did not realize it included a kitchenette or we would have brought food however the restaurant was quite lovely too. We had 2 rooms one with 2 queens and one with a king and 2 bathrooms one with an outdoor volcano rock design. The kitchenette and a living area again way more than we expected in the jungle. Beautiful full porch facing the volcano with a jacuzzi on it. I wish that you could see the volcano from the jacuzzi but you couldn't. The only thing there is to do here is hike and there are really only 2 hiking paths one long one shorter and that is all. Great if you want to commune with nature and just listen to the jungle sounds as we did and enjoyed immensely. They drive you around on golf carts if you can't make the hill to your room. Absolutely stunning views. Pool is smaller than the pictures look but still very nice.

Had a hot stone massage to die for and I have massages every month at home. This was spectacular. Had a massage on the beach side of Costa Rica not nearly as good.

Room Tip: Get the bungalow if available well worth it.

Lost Iguana is an excellent place to stay if planning on a trip to Arenal/La Fortuna area, It is only 15 minutes from La Fortuna and the driving is easy if you have a rental, but they have shuttle services to all the fun stuff if you don't. Of course, I would have been perfectly happy never leaving the property at all. Birding, hiking, hanging bridges, butterflies, swimming pools, restaurant, bar and gift shop were all above par. The spa was wonderful and very relaxing. There are no down sides to booking here. It's clean and the rooms are spacious. This place is what it claims to be. Go for it.

Room Tip: It's good to be on the end and upstairs.

A really lovely place from which to explore the Volcan Arenal area. We had a fabulous view of the volcano and no-one overlooking us, so it felt very private. The staff were all brilliant. Make sure to check out the shop while you're there, too!

This a unique place. The first thing to mention is the view from the rooms. They all face the volcano and are designed to make you feel that the volcano is part of your room. On a cloudy day this is impressive but on a clear one the view is breathtaking. The included breakfast was delicious and the heat pool was a lot of fun. One quick tip: the gift shop is stocked with nice goods and apparel and the prices are reasonable. As an example, we found a Costa Rican-made handbag here for $60 and saw an identical model in a store in Tamarindo later for $200.

We enjoyed our stay at Iguana Lost Resort very much. It is a beautiful place, the hotel is wonderful and surrounded by nature, it is the perfect mix between luxury and wilderness, our room 20, on los Fuentes was great and the staff was always helpful and very professional, the SPA is a must, do not missed it! Very well located close to the hanging bridges, La Fortuna and its waterfall plus a lot more thing to do!!!

Just returned from a trip that included the Lost Iguana Resort, and this was the only property that fell short of expectations. The hotel has a ton of potential, but seems a little lost in management and direction.

First thing to be aware of is the location, which is just north of the Arenal dam, and thus a ways from town and many destinations, which if you don't have a car results in hefty expenses. A one way cab ride to town is $30, and Tabacon hot springs is $20. They did offer transport in the employee shuttle, but it was limited and had to be arranged in advance.

The hotel says it has wi-fi, but this is only really accessible in the check-in lobby, which is down at the bottom of the hill. When I asked about wi-fi in the dining area they said that was turned off because guests would hang out there, and they did not want that happening... duh?, it's an outdoor open area that has no one there other then breakfast and dinner and it might create a little business and atmosphere!

The bar and pool area is a kind of small for the size of the resort, but the place was not too crowded when we were there, so it was ok. Experience there was not great, after taking a hike through their trails and ending up at the pool wanting to swim there were no towels (other then all the abandon ones that had not been collected during the afternoon). When I asked for towels I was sent up to the restaurant to ask there, and told they would be delivered in a few minutes. Another guy came to the pool in a few minutes to let me know they were out of towels, and it would be 30 to 45 minutes before they could come up with any. I could not believe a "resort" this size was out of towels, and let him know that was unacceptable and they should be able to come up with two towels. He finally agreed and came back a few minutes with a couple of towels for us and some extras, but it should have been a simple request to fill.

Food and drink were ok, but a little pricey. Buffet breakfast was included and adequate, but lunch and dinner were from a pretty boring static menu, figure on $20pp without drinks. Drinks were $5 for a smoothie, and $6-8 for beer and cocktails. There was a 2 for 1 happy hour, but beer for that was just 2 glasses for $5.

The room was large and clean, with an outstanding view of the (dormant) volcano. We were upstairs, #10, which was a corner room with an outdoor jacuzzi tub on the terrace. They have cable tv, indoor and outdoor seating, a little bar and a comfortable bed. AC worked fine, but the control lights were way too bright and lit up the room, so we went fan only to sleep.

The best part of the whole place was the Golden Gecko Spa, which has a nice setting, good services and great staff. We both had coffee body scrubs and massages, and were very pleased with the services.

In whole the place has a lot more potential, needing a more polished approach to customer service and something to liven up the atmosphere. I think this would be better suited as an all inclusive for dinner, with buffett meals that have variety. If you are there a few days the food is boring, and buffets generally create more interaction between guests. I've been to Arenal 3 times now, and if returning would probably stay at Tabacon. I find their hot springs the highlight of the area, and if you factor in the $62pp admission for guests to visit it would pay off to stay.
