“What a great find!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2014

We really loved our stay here. Wonderful views, our own pool, (if you're in Cabin 1) and very close to downtown La Fortuna. The cabin was very clean, and the gardens and waterfall were just lovely. And it came with it's own cats and dogs that were awesome! If you're not a critter person, our cabin did have half doors if you wanted the airflow but not the critters. But really, if you don't like critters why would you come to Costa Rica? Maybe that's just me. Anyway, lot's of pros but there were two cons. One, since there is no AC, I would never stay there during their summer months. They need more fans, some ceiling fans would really help. And there are few (if any, can't remember) screens, so opening the windows can be a problem if it starts getting buggy. The only other con is this - I don't need housekeeping everyday, but after 4 days your trash is seriously building up and all 4 of us would have liked to have had fresh towels. There did seem to be a staff member that lived onsite (I think) but that meant happening to run into him when you were there which didn't happen very often. No fault of his, we just left early and came back late. That being said I would recommend this hotel highly. Location was great, very reasonably priced, the owner was wonderfully prompt on returning emails, views were beautiful and two of the cutest puppy dogs ever!

Room Tip: We were in Cabin 1 which is a 3/2. It was great for the 4 of us but don't know anything about th...

For 4 travelers on a budget, this homey set of cabins about a mile out of La Fortuna was just perfect. They're more like really nice camping cabins than a hotel, so be prepared for that atmosphere. We loved the view of Arenal from the big cabin, along with the lovely gardens and small, private swimming pool (only for the big cabin, I believe). My daughter and I shared the downstairs bedroom (one double, one single) and small shower/bathroom, and my friend and her son each had a spacious bedroom upstairs, with one bathroom to share up there. It could sleep 7 or 8 if you used the couch as well. It was a great deal for what we paid, and spacious for only 4 of us. The kitchen was small but sufficient for our breakfasts and simple lunches. We had our dinners in La Fortuna, and walked back to the cabin from dinner after dusk a few times. My friend also talked us into walking to La Catarata and La Fortuna during the day, but I don't recommend that in the heat of the day. The cabs from the bus station are inexpensive for such short rides.
The family that owns the establishment is very friendly and helpful, but speaks only Spanish, so make sure someone in your group is able to communicate. You also have to like dogs. It seems everywhere in Costa Rica there are friendly dogs running loose, and this place is no exception. I would not bring children who are afraid of dogs.

Room Tip: We thought the biggest cabin was worth the extra money, considering the view and the pool.

We stayed in cabin nr 4 ( the newest one) so I can only talk about this one . We were 2 adults and 2 children (5 and 9 years old).

Cabin nr 4 walls are not fully bugs screen insulated . There are big openings between the roof and the walls so if you don't want to be bothered by the insects, you cannot turn on the lights at night time, basically after 7 pm (in July). If you are afraid of crawling and flying insects while you sleep, this is NOT the place to stay.

The kitchen is very small, it was very tight to sit at the tiny bar height table (4 adults would have been impossible). No regular pans, no stove, only an electric pan and a rice cooker. The fridge though was very big.

For the cleanliness, no issue at all. Cabana nr 4 is very clean and charming. The shower is very big. There is hot wAter. Both rooms have an efficient fan. There is a covered porch ( very practical during the rainy season) overlooking the exotic garden where you can fully admire the exotic birds.

The rest of the property is nice for children : there is a big open space with grass , some pineapple and banana trees. There is some staff leaving on the property (only Spanish speakers) but the english speaking "owner" is reachable by e mail and all of them are very nice and helpful.

The property is about 5 mn drive from downtown La Fortuna, so about 30 mn walk at least if you don't have a car. It is easily accessible from the main road.

We only stayed here for two nights and for that time it was fine. We had a cabin for four people with two nice bedrooms, one having a small veranda outside. The kitchen is a bit limited I must say. As we only had breakfast here we could do, but making a dinner for so many people would've been difficult, with only 1 electric pan. One other thing that was questionable was how the electricity was setup around the bathroom. It did not look very professional or safe.

We were disappointed not to have met the owner, who was supposed to come and show us around the place on the day of our arrival. Instead there was a helper who gave us the keys and showed us which cabins were ours.

The location of the place is perfect. It is very close to a nice Italian restaurant where they serve great food, and you're in the center of Fortuna after only a small walk. Try to find the food market that is in a big hall on your way to the center, tasty foods and kind people!

We traveled to La Fortuna and stayed at Cabanas Rusticas for 3 nights.

Overall, a great experience, and certainly great value for money (we paid $40/night, and this was right before New Years). We had our own little cabin, right back in the midst of trees and nature. Important to keep in mind a few things:
- It's definitely a rustic-like experience. There isn't air conditioning (at least in our room), but we had a fan that did the trick during the night.
- In order to have hot water, you needed to keep the pressure very low (we had an electrical shower head)
- You have lots of nature all around, which also means there are bugs. We kept the windows open to keep fresh air, so we didn't turn on the main lights during the evening (to keep bugs away). Overall, I only got a few bites (I get bitten everywhere we go), and none in particular in the evenings, so this didn't bother me too much.

One of the really nice pluses: We can back from hiking cerro chato, where we got incredibly muddy. My white shoes were basically destroyed (seriously muddy and gross). The lady who either owned or managed the place (I didn't catch her name as my Spanish is pretty bad / non-existent) offered to take our shoes and clean them. I got them back, looking brand new - incredible. When we tried to tip her as we were leaving to say thank you, she refused, saying that it was no problem, and she was happy to do so.

These definitely aren't luxury accommodations, but we found them to be clean, comfortable, and definitely unique. A fun stay in La Fortuna.

I was surpriced by the beauty of this cabinas! All made of wood and furnitured with a huge bed. The last day we even found a nice terras under the cabinas, where you can have a nice breakfast overlooking the garden en listening to the birds and the little waterfall. Especially considered the price, only $40 per night, it's worth to visit. Ceck it out yourself!

This was our favorite place of five places, my wife and I stayed at for our Honeymoon in Costa Rica. We stayed in their smallest cabin, has a beautiful cabin décor and is well built with amazing craftmanship. The ambient sound was wonderful, we got to sleep to the sound of a brook, with a small waterfall and birds. We loved being able to relax on the porch and it felt like we had a small home away from home. The staff were wonderful and friendly and made our time their more enjoyable. During our trip, we continually recommended Cabinas Rusticus to other people we met along the way. I don’t think you can find a better deal for the money.
