“Friendly Staff, Beautiful Gardens/Restaurant/Pools”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2010

When we first arrived, we were amazed that we would be staying in such a beautiful place. The gardens are amazing and the rooms are spread out over one level so you get a private and peaceful feel. Lovely brick walkways through the gardens lead you from your room to the pools, front desk building, restaurant and parking lot. Our room was spacious and clean with a nice patio with rocking chairs, perfect for enjoying the relaxing sounds of frogs in the evening. All of the staff people we encountered (from restaurant wait staff to garden keepers) were very friendly and personable. The food, drinks, pools, and hot tubs were luxurious. We had perfect views of Arenal Volcano from our room and the restaurant. We felt spoiled while at the same time very much surrounded by the beautiful nature of Costa Rica. We will definitely stay here again!

The Volcano Lodge is a large property with a few pools and two? large dining areas. Our room had a perfect view of the volcano and we were able to see it from our bed. The bed was a little on the hard side. The room was nice and large and we had a private patio facing the volcano. The one bad issues was since the properly was so large it was a long walk from our room to the reception desk where the 2 public computers are located. The hotel is only about a 10 minute drive from La Fortuna and all of our tours picked us up for free at our hotel. For the price of $70/per night this place was perfect.

We stayed here three nights, but could have stayed a few more. We had a warm welcome. The rooms, recently refurbished, were exceptionally comfortable: A/C, TV, twin king beds, comfortable bedding, phone, safe, laundry service, very good lighting, private patio and flower garden to entice the humming birds. Not to mention that the view from your room is of the Arenal Volcano which spurts smoke every 30 mins. The place feels secure and generally quiet too.

There are several small pools, and two restaurants. The food quality is fantastic, priced just about right for the quality. The bar sells snacks too. Two internet computers are available for use in reception, wifi is available throughout most of the park too. The gardens are meticulously landscaped, with beautiful flowers and a nature trail too featuring large birds overhead (like Montezuma's Oropendola) and small birds (hummingbirds) frequenting the flowers.

The tours are great and well organised. We went on a ATV ride to the La Fortuna waterfall viewpoint and down a trail to an old bridge (great rustic Costa Rica countryside). We also took the volcano hike (with an enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgable guide) followed up by the exclusive Tabacon hot springs. One day we also went on the Cano Negro boat tour (including the amusing Iguana Tree cafe and local farm). The guide for that tour (Jose) was brilliant, keen to learn from us about our culture and more than capable of giving us a complete history of Costa Rican society, culture and spotting wildlife.

For us, it was nice to have this comfort combined with stays in other more wildlife-centred hotels in the country. Incidentally, there is also a nature park 5 minutes round the corner from the hotel which we thoroughly recommdend called 'Arenal Natura', the reception can provide a discount leaflet.

We're a family of 4 living in Costa Rica for five months, and are exploring as many different places as possible while we are here! Of course we couldn't miss a trip to Arenal!

We selected Volcano Lodge based on trip advisor reviews and we were very glad we did. The reception staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, with excellent English and also very tolerant of letting us practice our poor Spanish. It was raining and we were taken to our room in a golf cart and given a tour of the property on the way, then escorted with umbrellas right to the room.

Our room was large and comfortable, with two double beds. When our 7 and 10 year old boys didn't want to share a bed, they quickly brought in an extra twin. And this was no roll away, it was a real mattress and wooden frame! The air conditioning and TV were a treat for relaxing inside. The amazing setting was perfect for relaxing outside. The grounds and gardens are beautiful, and make you feel like you are staying in a five star resort. The porches with comfy chairs and volcano views were delightful. They really do offer them in every room! One sweet touch was the different towel art that greeted you every day after housekeeping had come through - the elephant encircled in flower petals was our favorite.

Despite the rain when we arrived, the weather was gorgeous the rest of our trip. We probably spent most of our time there in the pool next to the restaurant (they have two). It's a fantastic pool. We also liked the restaurant so much that we ate every meal there for our entire stay. Not that it was gourmet or anything, but it was big enough that there was something different for each of us to enjoy at each meal, even the picky kids. The breakfast buffet was their favorite.

The volcano was very active while we were there and we even got to see the famous red lava fall one night at dinner (We were told seeing the red lava flowing down from that side of the volcano is pretty rare. You can definitely hear eruptions and see smoke billowing throughout the days - that is not rare).

The location is not close enough to walk to anything, and taxis are expensive in the area. The short ride to Baldi hot springs was $8 each way! We did enjoy the hot springs. I might have selected a different one if it was just my husband and I, but Baldi was great with the kids. We also did a volcano tour but otherwise just really enjoyed ourselves at the hotel! The kids never wanted to leave the grounds.

We thought it was very luxurious for the reasonable price. And, after we left, they emailed us a great coupon to return or pass on to our friends. Our friends did stay there a month or so later and loved it as well. We highly recommend this place!

The hotel and grounds are really gorgeous. We actually went during the rainy season and only ended up paying $59 a night which was a steal. (and we lucked out with the weather; it only rained on our way back to the airport!) Our room had direct views of the volcano which was amazing to wake up to. The breakfast each morning was delicious (they had eggs, bacon, rice and beans and plenty of fruit and bread). We would absolutely go back.

We stayed at Volcano Lodge in La Fortuna during our trip to Costa Rica. The hotel is beautiful and the view from our room was amazing. The room was clean and the hotel property which was HUGE is one big garden with beautiful flowers all over. We eat our breakfast listening to the birds. It was refreshing. The staff was very helpful and help us sign up for the local attractions.
