The view is amazing from all the rooms, the staff is nice, the place is lovely. We had such a wonderful time. This hotel was fantastic. I would recommend that anyone who goes to Arenal stay in this hotel.

We had a great time. Our room was clean, and sufficient. The view out our back porch was INCREDIBLE. The pool and bar area were nice. The service was great and the front desk was more than helpful. The location is okay...6-8 dollars each way into town. With our rate, meals were included, and the food we were offered was at best, mediocre. I looked at the regular menu, and it looked like it was probably better, but we were told we couldn't order off that. Overall, it's a good place to stay!

Apon arrival, we were checked in and then escorted by golf cart to our room. I was amazed at the flora and fauna on the property,it was a huge tropical oasis. At times, I wanted to cry, I was so happy with the sights of hummingbirds flying around and beautiful little yellow birds and they are all attracted to the hundreds of flowers on this property. I took over 100 pictures of different varieties of palms, flowers, orchids and hummingbirds galore!! The rooms were so nice, with windows that looked out at the volcano, I felt like I was on a honeymoon!! There is a back porch where there are wooden rocking chairs to watch the sunsets, sunrise and the volcano as it steams. The breakfast was amazing. The food was so good, with so many varieties to choose from. The staff was amazing, they were all so observant and dedicated to doing their jobs and making you feel important. It rained one night and one of the guys was going to walk with my boyfriend and I with umbrella over us to our room! I said no,we would just run back in the rain, we were on the most unbelieveable vacation!!! And this place made it amazing!! There is a little nature trail as well and when you come back to your room after the maids have attended to it, there are little towel animals made up with flowers surrounding them, I was truely in a wonderful place!! I will bring my daughters back here next year so they can experience the feeling I got when staying here. I have no bad or negative comments about this place and hope that it only succeeds so I can return to it in the future!!

We couldn't believe how cool this place was for $80 a night! There are 2 restaurants on site, which have some of the best food that we tasted in the country. In particular I liked the fish ceviche & Arroz Con Pollo at the Sura restaurant (not the one at the front of the property). The waiters were great, in particular Adrian at Sura. Breakfast was free there every morning and consisted of eggs, toast, custom omelets, fried plantains, cereal, fruit, meats, rice & beans, multiple juices, etc. It was a terrifc way to start the day's adventures and was quite healthy. The prices for lunch and dinner were super reasonable with pasta dishes running $8-10, ALL steaks for less than $20, arroz con pollo going for $12.

The walking trail behind the hotel was very nice, well maintained and interesting. It's about 400 meters (1300 ft). The hotel also has 2 free computers to use in the lobby, which was great. Note that the cd trays don't open.

They had a guy in a golf cart that was available 24 hours a day, you just had to phone front desk and he'd pick you up in a jiffy and bring you wherever (we walked exclusively except with luggage).

The rooms themselves were fantastic. AC unit was great, towels, safe, towel animals every day on the bed, a beautiful terrace outside each unit pointed towards the volcano, beautiful views of the volcano, nice new bathroom, etc etc! Point is, unbeatable value for $80 a night which we paid. Breakfast included was easily worth $10 each, so really it's $60 a night compared to other places.

The pools were also great, with hot tubs close. There were 2 pool locations: in the front by reception and in the back by the sura restaurant. If you want super privacy, go to the one near reception, always empty!

Cab ride from late July 2010 is about $7-7.50 to La Fortuna. $14 directly to La Fortuna Waterfall (tell the cab driver: "La Catarata Fortuna, por favor). BE AWARE WHEN THE CABBY DOESN'T TURN THE METER ON! Each and EVERY time you get in a cab pretty much everywhere in Costa Rica, look to see if he turns it on. If he doesn't, immediately let him know you'd like it on "Ponga su maria, por favor". If he doesn't turn on the "maria", I would suggest you get out and call for another cab. If you don't they will generally kill you on the rate when you get there, sometimes double what it should be. Fair warning!

I recommend this hotel no matter if you are traveling with your family or your significant other. It is nice, cozy, clean, well maintained, simple, and has pretty gardens. We had a beautiful volcano view from our room. The best thing was the breakfast buffet included with your room. We were lucky to be there by their 5th anniversary and they had music at the restaurant that weekend. The hotel is accessible (paved road) and located on the main road that takes you downtown or to any of the parks/adventures in La Fortuna. We found the prices at the restaurant a little high, but La Fortuna has become a touristic town and they all take advantage of that. The housekeeper made beautiful animal figures with our towels and left them on the bed every night. They do not have a spa, but massage in the room is available upon request.

The rooms were spacious, new, and nicely decorated. The back patio and yard made it really pleasant and the grounds were beautiful! We went on a long volcano hike the 2nd night near the park / observatory and didn't see anything. The next night, we saw a HUGE eruption from our back porch! Breakfast was great and the staff was friendly / attentive. I'm picky about hotels and was a little worried when booking at such a great price, but went with it because we needed 3 rooms -- We couldn't have been more pleased with our choice! In reading other reviews, I was afraid that the volcano view / action wasn't as good from this part of town, but we actually had much better luck in this area. Make sure to ask for a room where the back patio faces the volcano. There is a great italian restaurant on the left side of the road about 1/8 mile when you head into town (best place we ate on our 10 day trip). One con -- the wireless internet didn't work from our room (but it did work from the restaurant)

Until I stayed at the Volcano Lodge, I was not aware of Towel Art, which is what I'm calling the ornate fuzzy creatures that we found lying on our beds every afternoon. Our towels were so beautifully wrapped into life-like animals that hardly wanted to use them at all, except after taking pictures of course. It was little things like this that really set apart the service from any other hotel that we've stayed at.

Another unique feature about the Volcano Lodge is well...the volcano! Which by the way we saw erupt: Imagine sitting at the hotel's restaurant eating a fantastic traditional Costa Rican dinner and then hearing something like the sound of rolling thunder rise above your conversations, and it isn't lightening. What we heard and saw that night (and we did actually see this) was red molten lava spilling down the side of the Arenal Volcano right in front of our eyes. It was all too real, and a little unnerving as one does not usually experience such a thing at the dinner table! However it was an unforgettable sight and one that only few are lucky to see. If you do decide to bed down at the Volcano Lodge for a night I can guarantee that you're more than likely going to witness some sort of volcanic activity as Arenal Volcano happens to be the second most active volcano in the world. It's like having National Geographic in your backyard, with the only downside being that sometimes the Volcano isn't really aware of human sleeping schedule and often likes putting on a show early in the morning; albeit, just about whenever it wants. However what we saw was rare and doesn't usually occur on the side of the Volcano that the hotel is on, so don't get your hopes up! What you can be sure to see and hear are smaller-scale activity such as rumbling, puffs of smoke, sparks, and even molten boulders which are always up for view if you take the hike up to the summit of the volcano. However that's not to say you won't see a volcanic eruption, we certainly did!

All in all, the Volcano Lodge made for an unforgettable experience at a decent price. It's not everyday that you get to see a volcano erupt, and especially not so close to where your bed! It's an exciting undertone to all the great services and amenities the hotel provides. Just to sum up the experience, here's a list of pros and cons.

Pros:
- Volcano in backyard...AWESOME!
- Friendly and responsive staff
- Air Conditioner (It works very well!)
- Television
- Lots of lighting, lamps included
- Patio with adjoining garden
- Clean and tidy bathrooms with hot water
- Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body wash all provided in handy hand-pump dispensers
- TRUE Room Service (will make beds and replace towels every afternoon)
- Laundry Service (for a price)
- Free Breakfast (delicious and traditional)
- Beautiful, exotic, and well-kept gardens everywhere you go
- Lots of room for parking (located very close to your rooms as well)
- Good Security (have an entrance guard and extra locks on door)
- Swimming pools and Hot Tub

Cons:
- Occasionally the volcano will rumble during night and may wake up you light sleepers, of course my family and I enjoyed running out half-naked onto the patio in the middle of the night to watch little red sparks and rocks occasionally eject out of the volcano
- The prices for extra services such as food and laundry are a bit high relative to the states, however you will find that they are actually quite low when compared to everything else in Costa Rica and reasonable for the effort put into customer satisfaction

Conclusion: We did it, we loved it, no doubt you will too!
