“Lava flows at your back door!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2006

"Location" etc. Like most hotels in the area, this one sits at the foot of the very active Arenal Volcano and despite the daily clouds/rain (still rainforest after all) you will probably not be disappointed by the lava flow at night. Two leather-seated wood rocking chairs sit outside the back door of your room so you can watch the lava flow. Once it is dark, you will see the red lava pour out of the top of the volcano and every so often a larger eruption flows down beyond the tree line so you lose sight of it. With that kind of view, you won't care too much about the rooms! Still, the hotel is very comfortable and clean, large rooms, and outstanding towel swans decorate the bed; flowers were added the next day. I turned on one wall light and it fell to the ground. Most lighting in CR was perhaps less than what Americans have at home. Satellite TV at this hotel with several American channels. Beautiful well-decorated and manicured grounds; very big, nice swimming pools and hot tubs. Nearby Hidalgo Family Hot Springs (if you can get in) are fabulous pools of body soothing warm waters heated by the volcano. Eat in nearby LaFortuna if you can except for the included breakfast.

We stayed here for one night while in the area. The grounds and pool were beautiful. The rooms are basic and clean. Each room has a view of the volcano which on the day we were there was shrouded in clouds. We only had breakfast, which was average. It is in a good location and we visited Tabacon Hot Springs which was close by (really neat to do but not worth the premium to stay there, I would recommend visiting and staying at a place like this). I felt that the room price was good and the staff nice. I would stay here again if in the area.

After 4 years from my last visit I take a weekend vacation to the beautiful Arenal Volcano with my wife, in a small country like CR in less than 4 hours by driving you will be in any place, in this case 2.5 hours.

My review

1) Rooms: clean and comfortable, with AC. No fridge or microwave.

2) View: excellent, it’s just relaxed seeing the sunset with the volcano in font of you.

3) Location: A few miles form la Fortuna, I recommend a car, so you can go to hanging bridges, thermal waters, and Arenal Lake by your own, but also most hotel has tours.

Tabacon was full so we went to Baldi by first time, is really a nice and a relaxing place, much less crowded than Tabacon. If you visited Arenal you must go to Tabacon but it case is full Baldi would be a good second option.

4)Breakfast: excellent, it's free and includes fruits, omelet, "gallo pinto" (our traditional breakfast), milk. orange juice, bread.

I considered this hotel a 3.5 stars, not so diferent from a Best Western, Quality Inn etc.

We found everything we needed, and remember CR magic is our natural resources.

All rooms have huge windows that look right onto the volcano, although it was shrouded in mist most of the time we were there. The gardens are beautifully landscaped attracting many tropical birds and butterflies. Great buffet breakfast with great views. Restaurant was excellent and plentiful albeit fairly expensive. One downfall was the staff who didn't provide us with any tourist/hotel info on arrival so we weren't too sure what times meals were served or if they had a bar etc.
