“Great Views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013 via mobile

Our hotel room was amazing with a breath taking view of Volcan Arenal. The staff was very helpful when we asked about expeditions and adventures. The staff at the resturant Sura are awesome. Food was delicious and had a great happy hr. Highly recommend this hotel :)

we stayed in room 309, an end-unit which had two full size beds, a patio view of the volcano, and close walk to the pool and restaurant. You pretty much can't get a better room. The gardens are a delight to walk through, featuring beautiful tropical flora,  birds and butterflies. We enjoyed happy hour at the pool, including the pool bar. The restaurant was very good. Only three small knocks: the rooms had no refrigerator, the "shuttle" to la Fortuna only ran once a day, and room walls are thin. The horseback riding and canopy tours they offered were both excellent and reasonably priced.

Our room had a spectacular view of the volcano (althugh it was covered in clouds most of the time). The property was lovely and well cared for. The included breakfast was quite good. The pools, and jacuzzi, very clean and well maintained. The location was perfect, just a few miles outside of towns edge, so it was easy to drive into town for dinner, and all of the attractions were easy to get to from the hotel. Maid service was very good, and left nice touches on the bed with creatively done elephants, and swans (from your fresh towels). The only complaint was no wifi in the rooms, you had to go out side or down by the restaurant. Highly recommended and a great deal for the price. We stayed 3 nights, and were quite satisfied. A note to couples travelling.....the walls are quite thin, and on several occasions we heard our very happy couple neighbors, enjoying "their time together".

Room Tip: we had room 209, great view

So happy to have chosen a quiet beautiful well maintained property that employs professionally minded staff that are helpful and happy. The breakfast area restaurant looks out onto the main attraction - the Arenal Volcano. WOW did we ever get lucky in choosing this as our first stop in Costa Rica.

The service at this hotel was very nice and most of the staff spoke English well. Our rooms were clean, but had a musty smell (because of the damp weather) and thin walls, so I could hear our neighbors talking late at night, and people outside. There are beautiful gardens and the pools and hot tubs are very clean. Also, there was a fantastic view of the Arenal volcano from right outside our patio. The complementary breakfast was excellent as well. The hotel is pretty close to some restaurants (walking distance) and just a taxi ride away from the center of town. We spent most of our time in La Fortuna taking organized tours of the area.

Just got back from 10 days in Costa Rica. We started with Arenal to see the Volcanoe area and visit the hot springs. The Tabacoon {spelling??} hot springs are fantastic. We also included dinner in our trip there. The hot springs are a natural water flow of really hot water with multiple bathing spots to soak in the stream with various water fall areas to to "message" by the water. It is great for all ages and even with hundereds of people, it is so huge you have your own private areas. There is several freshwater pools to swim in to cool off a bit and go back into the hot springs. They also have great locker rooms with locker for rent. The lockers are key access and you pay a deposit for the key and a towel. When you return the key and towel, you get your deposit back. This is pricey, but really worth it. The other options are like ponds filled with hot water to just sit in. This is based on what others that did those options told us. After talking to them, we were glad to have sprung for the pricey option. The volcanoe tours are a joke. You pay to walk in a 1.5 mile loop through someone's "sanitary". Very loose term there. You never go near the volcanoe ever. It is illegal and only done by scientists, so that was a waste of money and very misleading thinking that by paying for a tour you actually go near the volcano, just not true. I think two days in this area is more than enough. There is no hiking! Everything in Costa Rica is owned and private land, and even the National Park there is only 2 mile worth of trails. It was just ok. I wish we had hiked up to the crater lake. We only learned about it on our last eve and did not have a chance to do. THere is a short but very steep hike up an extinct crater with a blue lake you can swim in. Forgot what is it called, but the trail begins near the volcanoe observation platform. We stayed at Volcaneo lodge and it is really pretty with two pools, laundry, and great food. Everything we got in the restaurant was spectacular! The breakfast here is also the best we had in Costa Rica. In this area, if you want to go anywhere it is a taxi if you do not have a car and expect to pay $25.00 one way anywhere and $8.00 to get to town one way. Walking is doable as far as distance, but safety with all the traffic and no side area to walk on is a diff thing. We paid for taxis and wished we had rented a car. PS if you rent a car, in San Juan and anywhere there is traffic, prepare for some seriously crazy driving. People drive within inches of each other on all sides and one way streets seem to be optional which way you go. As for the Arenal town, there is nothing there.

Room Tip: We stayed at the end of the drive. It is a bit of a walk to the reception area and to dining. If y...

Laid out in beautiful gardens with a short trail within the grounds. Excellent buffet breakfast with cook to order eggs if you wish. The hotel is about 4 miles from the nearest village, so if you don't have transport, you have to use the hotel restaurant, where everything is priced in USD. There are adventure vendors not far from the gate, but no trekking trails nearby. Rooms are kept clean with daily variation in towel decorations. Room facilities include in-room safe, wifi, a coffee percolator and TV although, apart from CNN, we didn't find anything watchable as most channels seem to be in Spanish, but you don't go there to watch TV. There are 2 pools and a large hot tub big enough for 20 or so people. We enjoyed the local Costa Rica menu in the restaurant and prices are reasonable by Costa Rican standards but international dishes are a bit more pricey. Beware some waiters try to sell you expensive bottled water when there is more drinkable safe tap water available. Wine is expensive in Costa Rica and beer is a bit more than UK prices.
The rooms are in blocks of 4 with solid walls but sound travels really well via the roof space. The nature trail in the grounds can be walked quickly but take your time and you see lots more, such as a tiny egg cup nest on the end of a thin twig with a humming bird incubating, situated over the middle of the pond. It's interesting to follow the leafcutter ant trails which run long distances to get the specific plant they need. Outside our room we watched a flycatcher building its hanging nest, over the 3days we spent at the hotel.
On our last day, someone had sprayed the leafcutters; understandable given the way they strip the garden plants but it might raise a question about the Lodge’s claim of being eco.
All the land around appears to be privately owned and we didn’t find anywhere to walk in the countryside without going on an organized trip.
Fortuna is the nearest village approximately 7km or more away and there’s no bus service, so unless you have your own vehicle, it’s best to bring any medication / supplies you may need with you.
Domestics: Electricity: 110v US flat pin. We found the tap water was preferable to the bottled – tasted better. Free Wifi. Weather: mostly dry/warm, sunny periods, heavy showers mainly evening/night.

Room Tip: End of a block, then if neighbours are not quiet, you only have them on one side.
