“Nice fancy hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2011

As it was our honeymoon we thought we'd stay somewhere a bit fancier than our usual more budget choices and this was a really nice place for 2nts in the area. The staff are very very helpful, friendly and can't do enough for you. Lovely pool with massive jacuzzi -good for lounging in and great views from here of the volcano, nice way to spend sunset! Really nice food and great breakfast included.
Great place to stay especially if you have a car as the hotel is 7km outside of La Fortuna and there isn't anything about within walking distance apart from other hotels -we tried walking around for a few km's but no buses etc so don't do it unless you want a long walk on the road. Most of the main sites are out of town anyway though so this isn't really an issue. The hotel can organise tours, we thought they were a wee bit pricey -this would be my only slight criticism but maybe this is just as we're used to roughing it and doing things ourselves. The waterfall (La Caterata) is worth a visit -amazing and good swimming after the hike down. Really nice place, thanks to all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable :) (Oh and loved the towel on the bed made into an elephant complete with petal eyes etc, talented housekeeping!!! )

So wonderful! We had a back door to our room leading out to a porch with rocking chairs where we could sit and enjoy the view of the volcano as well as hummingbirds flying around the fauna. The front desk staff (Alejandro and Fabian) were fantastic and were so helpful in planning our excursions. The pool was relaxing and you could swim up to the bar to order a drink. Just charge it to the room. Fantastic stay!

This is a great place to stay. Wonderful staff and the rooms, restaurants, pools, are clean and well kept. I enjoyed t staff who were pleasant, helpful and just delightful even in side conversations. The pictures are true to what we experienced and they were helpful in setting up tours that would fit our schedule.

Considering the fact that I don't like false advertisement and I can be picky, I would recommend this place to anyone and would stay here again. I got more than what I paid for.

There are computers to use in the main lounge and free wi-fi there and in the restaurants and pool area. There are none in the rooms though. I can live with that. The only downside is that I think I would have loved to have seen more Costa Rican food in the restaurants.

Everything was outstanding - beautiful local, fantastic food, genuinely helpful staff, nothing better than sitting in the hot tub looking up at the volcano. This 3 star hotel seemed like a 5 to me... The room rate was a bargain as far as I could compare, but when I made an error in my computer booking, which the lodge could have easily corrected/credited me for, they refused. I still think it was worth it because what appeared to be comparable hotels cost double to triple the price, but Volcano Lodge made a fortune on the 'extras' - my family of 4 booked several tours, ate exclusively in their restaurants, ran up a bill at the bar and utilized the spa services. It would have still been well worth it in the spirit of true customer service for the hotel to have corrected my billing problem. If that sort of thing is important to you, try someplace else - every other place we went, the Costa Ricans were so gracious and generous that this 'glitch' seemed out of character and was unique to our otherwise perfect trip.

We loved the Volcano Lodge. The lodge has been updated and the rooms are lovely with views of gardens on all sides. You could make a horticultural study of Costa Rican plants just on the grounds of the Volcano Lodge and we saw many different kinds of birds as well. The breakfast buffet is ample and gives you a great start for an adventurous day trip. We ate our dinner there one night and the food was delicious. Altogether we only wished we had more time to stay on the grounds just to enjoy the place but instead we booked too many day tours! Oh well, next time we will know better. The only thing you might want to know is that the beds are firm...as they are in most of the hotels. For us softies I recommend bringing along an Aerobed when you travel then you will always be comfortable wherever you go!
