“Volcano view with hot springs.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

The cottage that we stayed in had a perfect view of the Arenal volcano. We were thrilled with our proximity. Only a short walk away was the pool, pool bar, and hot springs. They even had volcanic mud and a wide paint brush so you can skip the spa treatment and do it yourself. I was black from head to toe until it dried about 15 minutes later, then I was grey.
The pool was cool and the hot springs were hot like a whirlpool tub.
Breakfast was a huge Spanish buffet. Really good.
We did the river tubing and highly recommend it. It was a hike through the jungle past a waterfall. When we got to the river we shot a number of rapids and saw a number of waterfalls. Then we returned to the ranch across the street from our resort via horseback. I loved this excursion!

Room Tip: The bungalows are like cottages not posh rooms, they have a bedroom, bathroom and porch.

We booked a 3 night trip using a Living Social deal that was overpriced (and discounted!!!??) for what we received. It was supposed to be a Superior Bungalow Room and we both believe that Motel 6 has better rooms! There was nothing about the room that was superior and in fact was less than standard, sub-standard in reality. When we checked in, we were told someone would come to show us the room; no one came for more than 10 minutes (and we were supposed to also receive a welcome drink -- THIS would have been a great time to give us this drink and we NEVER got it/them). When I complained to the manager on the first morning, we were "upgraded" to a junior suite which I would describe as standard+/possibly superior, Again, even though I pointed out the discrepancies, NO welcome drink/ in the end. I gave up complaining and trying to get the welcome drink after telling someone for the third time.... I am not sure I have ever been treated so horribly and with less respect.

Room Tip: I would never go back to this place... ever!!

Two friends and I took a trip to Costa Rica and stayed at the Montana de Fuego from 8/8- 8/13. we bought the Living Social deal in May for 5 nights that included welcome cocktails, breakfast each day and two excursions/activities each. As three girls in our early twenties and on a budget, it was nice enough for us.

The bungalows are cute and private and the grounds are pretty and have a great view of the volcano. The air conditioning worked and the shower was good enough so we were happy. The hair dryer in the room was good as well. The beds needed a little updating but they were comfortable enough. The pool area was what needed to most updating. The lounge chairs were rusty and a few were broken. It is also a smaller pool area, but there were not many people there while we stayed there (or they were out doing other activities) so getting a spot by the pool was never an issue. The grounds are spread out, so I would bring an umbrella if you stay here since you need to walk a little bit to get to the lobby or restaurant and you will get wet if it is raining.

The hot springs: not really "hot springs" more like hot tubs that are trying to look like hot springs. I would still try to go to the others in the area to check out the authentic ones, but these were nice to have close by to relax in at night.

The staff at the hotel are friendly for the most part. We needed three towels in our room, and we had to ask for an additional one each day because the maid kept taking the extra and not replacing it, which was a little annoying.

We had to ask for the welcome cocktails promised by the Living Social deal so be sure to speak up if you have that.

The restaurant had good food but was overpriced (my chicken dinner was $21). The breakfast was good though, fresh fruit, juice, coffee, omlettes, eggs, plantains, toast, etc. so we almost never ate lunch because we were still full from breakfast. We ate in La Fortuna all but one night (the night of my $21 chicken). The hotel transportation is $14 each way into the city, but we had GREAT local food for very cheap so it was worth it in my opinion. Because of that, this hotel might be a good option for you if you are renting a car.

Wifi: there is wifi throughout the property, however it was very spotty unless you were in the lobby. This was a little annoying but I wasn't on vacation to be on my phone so checking it in the lobby every now and then wasn't a big deal to me.

We did have to wear wristbands to get breakfast, however after the first few days ours fell off and we did not have a problem since the staff recognized us by then.

Overall, it was a good enough hotel. Needs some updating by the pool and in general, but the AC worked, the shower was good, and the room had enough space for the three of us to spread out.

We booked this hotel for our honeymoon and we were told we had he "best" room. When we arrived at the hotel we were not too happy with the check-in process. We were shown to our room and when we walked in the room smelled musty and old... Like it had not been used in a long time. The room was old and did not seem to have been used in months . The hot tub was stained and was falling apart. There were dirty towels still in the bathroom. The bed was dirty and had our honeymoon welcome basked on it, which was an apple and orange. The whole place needed a facelift. We started looking for a new hotel the moment we walked in. Within 30 minutes we told the hotel that we were leaving and we wanted a refund. The manager was pleasant but still wanted us to pay 150 usd for admin stuff. I said that was not acceptable and at most we would pay $50. She kept having to check with the owner and finally agreed on that price. They still charged our card for the full amount and we are waiting for a refund. We switched hotels and for just a little more money we had the most amazing room at arenal springs resort and spa. This might be okay for some friends to stay but do not stay here if you are looking for a romantic hotel. There are much better, cleaner and great places to stay that have great views of the volcano.

The garden atmosphere of the property was a real treat- be sure to wander all around. The bungalows were charming and private. Restaurant food was delicious and service there was top-notch.
It is not walking distance to anywhere else, so you will need a car (or a taxi) if you want to try a different restaurant, etc. The lighting is poor in the rooms and there are no activities onsite, so if you have kids, bring games or something to do. They do have a pool and 3 minimal "springs." I didn't know they had them, so it was not a big deal that they were small. We were doing so many activities ( white water rafting, zip-lining, waterfall rappelling, hanging bridges hikes, etc.), that the lack of activities at the hotel was not an issue for us.

My daughter wanted to have a mother/daughter trip Costa Rica to celebrate her 30th birthday, and she left the details of the trip to me. When I read about this hotel, it appeared to fit our needs and was in the price range where we wanted to be. I was not disappointed with our selection. It was rustic enough where you knew you were not in a Marriott, and it gave you just enough of a feel for being in the wilderness. The Arenal Volcano was right there for us to see, whenever the clouds would allow us to view it, and the property was surrounded with tropical vegitation. We had a mini suite, with a bedroom and a living room. The bathroom was large with a jacuzzi/shower. It also had a hair dryer in the bathroom. In the hallway area there was a counter with sink, a mini and a microwave. In the living area, there was a small refrig which was stocked with bottled water, soda and a candy bar, all available for purchase. Our room was on the ground level, and had a door which opened to a paved porch area. In both the bedroom and living room, 2 of the 4 walls were wall to wall windows, with curtains for privacy. The room had a lot of outlets available to charge your phone, ipad, camera or whatever you needed to charge.

Since we went in the rainy season I should have expected it to rain. We brought our ponchos, and had to use them often. We went to breakfast one morning, and it started pouring while we were eating, forunately we had our umbrellas. It usually did not rain all way, but it was often overcast and very humid even when it wasnt raining.

The breakfast was a buffet, and had a large selection. Food was very tasty. We ate dinner there 2 nights, and the entrees were reasonably priced ($13-22 USD). Restaurant also overlooked the volcano and had 2 walls full windows.

The hotel location was about 5 miles from town (LaFortuna) and the taxi ride was around $12 one way. The hotel shuttle would sometimes take you places for a fee which would probably be less than the cost of a taxi.

We went to The Springs resort to visit the hot springs (it was not far from the hotel). The cost was $50, and it was for a 2 day pass. This is a really good deal because I was pricing the other hot springs nearby on the internet, and they ranged from $30-45 for one day.

The only down side of this experience is that you could not get internet in the room, but they had a computer and free internet in the lobby. I would recommend this hotel to my friends and I would stay here again.

Footnote: Lots of the tours recommended that you wear long pants. Since it was summer we only packed one pair, and wished we had packed at least one more pair.
