“Rustic lodge stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

My overall review is that this is a very nice place to stay. We stayed in the "lodge" like building on the property and not the bungalows. Room was huge and had all sorts of amenities with phenomenal water pressure! Saw a peacock wandering around and heard frogs and howler monkeys. Could not see Arenal due to cloud cover but that is typical. The food was excellent with in my opinion the coffee being the best part! Outside the restaurant an indigenous man was selling traditional hand made items made by the Maleku tribe. Staff was very nice and even helped me get ice when I forgot my ice bucket, they put it in a large plastic bag for me to carry back:)

Room Tip: We stayed in the building that looked like a lodge. The room was huge with 2 queen beds and a twin...

Montana de Fuego is a wonderful resort. The "therapists" at the spa are artists and I highly recommend massages. The rooms are large, at least ours was, a very large stand alone "cabana" with a perfect view of the volcano. All of the activities set up by the hotel were first rate and the people kind and helpful. The best might be the restaurant with first class gourmet meals all day. The coast is also nice (we stayed near Jaco) but I would not miss Montana de Fuego if you travel to Costa Rica.

As others have said, the bungalows are older but very clean. The bathroom was small but the shower was great. (Good water pressure and steady temps.) There is air conditioning here but it was rather loud. Still, after many nights of no a/c, it was a welcome relief to be able to cool down. There was a TV but I didn't turn it on either of the nights that we were there.

The grounds were very nice - lots of beautiful flowers and interesting vegetation. The best thing was the view of the volcano and the spa was excellent.

The breakfast buffet was amazing - so much to choose from. You could even choose your ingredients and have an omelet prepared for you! I ate dinner on my own one night and it was a bit pricey. I think I paid around $18 for a margarita and some soup.

I was part of an OAT tour group and some of our group went into La Fortuna for dinner. I stayed behind and went to the spa, which had a 'special' for a volcanic mud wrap and massage (2 hour session for both combined) for only $120! That was a real bargain in my opinion.

Room Tip: My room had a view of the volcano. I think these rooms may be older and perhaps not as large as some...

We absolutely loved our stay at the hotel. The grounds are very well kept and my daughter was running around with camera for hours taking pictures. The view is gorgeous and for the price - it's a great place to stay. The pool is a bit small, but to take a dip and relax, sipping a drink and looking at the volcano - it's perfect. They have three small cute hot spring pool. Very relaxing. They also have a volcano mud. My daughter and I did "facials" with it. Worked perfectly. Skin is so smooth after it and you can actually feel that your skin is breathing. The free breakfast is great! It was the best breakfast we ate in Costa Rica. Everything is fresh and a lot of variety. Coffee was perfect like everywhere in Costa Rica. It is kinda of far from the town (10 min ride), but this is what we wanted. If you are going on a tour - they will pick you up and drop at the hotel. La Fortuna is very small town and one day is enough to explore it. They have cute souvenirs shops, nice places to eat and a supermarket (where we got snacks, water, coffee beans and sunscreen lotion, which "somebody" forgot to bring with us from home!). We did take a taxi to go to La Fortuna waterfall (absolutely a MUST!!! and go early in the morning with towels and stay for few hours), then hang out in town, had lunch there, went back to the hotel and relaxed there. Took a tour of the volcano at the evening with the hot springs at Lagos. The tour was great - saw toucans, monkeys, birds and lot's of different insects. Without a guide it's hard to spot it. The trails are easy to follow, but you are missing a lot of interesting things and facts without a tour. It was very educational as well and my only complain - we were walking too fast. I like to look around more and don't rush, but I guess it was a timing issue, not our guide fault. The Lagos was good - not crowded, the rides were also fun - my husband and daughter enjoyed it very much, but it's very fast and my daughter hurt her elbow at the end. Buffet dinner was included and it was good. So, back to the hotel. Some reviews are saying the rooms are old, but in reality they are just very simple. Remember, you are practically in the jungle - so it's just wooden boxes with the beds inside. It suited us very well - felt being close to nature. My husband is an early riser, so he was making coffee in the room and enjoying his book sitting at the veranda with the volcano view. The restaurant in a property is a bit pricey for dinner, but if you going to town you are adding $$ for the taxi for your dinner. We ate two nights there and the food was good. Everybody very pleasant and accommodating. As for wrist bands - a lot of hotels there have it and since we are going to all-inclusive resorts offten, it didn't bother us at all. Absolutely will stay again.

We drove from San Jose to Arenal and the drive was gorgeous. The views from our room are spectacular and breathtaking. We had breakfast with a great view of the volcano. Rooms are a bit older, but very clean. The views from our bedroom defied description. Breakfast was delicious. The hotel restaurant prices are a bit high, but that is to be expected. Definitely, rent a car if you are going to be in Arenal. The hotel is not within walking distance to anything. The bartender at the wet bar was friendly and accommodating when we asked him to turn on some music. The thermal springs in the hotel are small compared to Baldi hot springs, but I enjoyed them more than Baldi (bonus no entrance fee to use them). The staff was very friendly. Everyone pretty much speaks English and Spanish so for anyone that does not speak Spanish, no worries. We visited Baldi hot springs in the evening and their buffet was very mediocre. The place itself is very nice. We didn’t see any monkeys, but we saw plenty of birds in the hotel. We drove to the national park and hiked to the volcano…I think getting a guide is a waste of time. The trails are very easy to follow and we were able to spot wild pigs and birds and only paid the park entrance fee. Beds are very hard, but when your in Costa Rica sleeping should be the last thing on your mind.

OK, so I know this is not a five-star property, but we had a five-star experience while we were there. We were greeted by Reyner when we arrived, and he personally took us to our bungalows. The first one we were assigned had a longish walk to it's front door, and Reyner noted that one of our party was on portable oxygen. He called back to the desk and found us another room without the long walk and an even better view of the volcano. The rest of our party was in another bungalow a short walk away.

We had dinner the first night in the hotel restaurant where we were treated as if we were the only ones there. We had great wine pairings and fantastic service from William. We were to meet up with him several times during our stay - even manning the pool bar one evening. He was great. I also have to mention one of his colleagues - Roberto. He was our bartended and waiter one several occassions and really great even helping me map out a quicker (and straighter) route back to San Jose at the end of our stay.

Breakfast each day was really good. The coffee was as good as expected. The pool and poolbar were wonderful. Finally, the termales (hot springs) were great at the end of the day. The volcano view? Well the photos posted for this hotel do not lie!

We stayed three nights. The first night was in a standard room. It was old, small and on the scale of an old Motel 6. We moved to a deluxe room and it was much nicer. Neither room look at all like the website pictures. Rooms are older, kinda dark. Great views of Arenal, however. The pool and hot springs were nice. Theft must be a problem, as there were lots of rules. You can get a key for in room safe, but it you lose it, a $120 charge applies. You get a coupon for towels for pool and if you don't turn them in, another charge. The biggest turn off is you are given a wrist band, like in the hospital, that you need to wear the whole time. Very demeaning. The property itself is very nice. They have 2 for1 happy hour, that we learned about by accident. It is literally 2 for1, meaning you can't get two different drinks, just two of the same. Internet in the lobby only

The breakfast was pretty good. Lunch and dinners were expensive and at best, average. The hotel is a long way from La Fortuna, so taxi ride required.

PROS: pools and hot springs, friendly staff
CONS. Rooms, food, distance from LaFortuna, wrist bands

I wouldn't stay here again.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a deluxe bungalow. Better bed, better every thing
