Because my room was stinky. Maybe it smelled like urine-I don't know,I got used to it after a while. One chair on the porch was broken and the table was wobbly. I was on a group tour and my friend's room was much more spacious than mine with newer furnishings and a front as well as a back porch.
The pools were pretty and a trail behind the spa led to a beautiful valley.
Buffet breakfast was a big spread with lots of options.
You are situated directly across from the volcano.

We stayed here for one night en route from Sarapiqui to Monteverde. The accommodation initially looks very nice but needs some TLC to prevent it becoming too shabby. There seemed to be no heating or air-conditioning (we needed the former!). It's quite a long walk from the rooms we were in to the main restaurant and reception area.

The (included) standard meal was pretty disappointing - if I'd had the option I would have preferred to eat a la carte.

To some extent this review is coloured by the fact that the weather was dreadful with no view whatsoever of the volcano. Without that the place becomes just another hotel.

We stayed for two nights at the Montana de Fuego. These bungalows were very roomy and comfortable. We got one with 3 beds so our kids each had their own bed. Staff were friendly, views were great, excellent food, and we got some great family pics after decorating each other in the mud pot!

Hello,

My girlfriend and I stayed here for one day and found the amenities to be very good, the staff very helpful and knowledgable. The entire experience was serene and calm. I would recommend this place to anyone wondering where to stay in Costa Rica. I also like the fact that it was close to all the activities that I was looking or such as canopy tour and rappeling.

in trying to be objective the front desk staff was friendly so were the 2 guys who offered to help us with our bags to our room. They were soooo helpful it was as if they would not leave once at the room. The place is dated we arrived and they do keep things clean. But the furniture is old not very comfortable and dated. The layout of things is not well thought out, in our room the refrigerator was in the living room with the TV but the microwave was in the hallway with an extra sink and coffee maker. The bedroom had a kingsized bed but my husband kept tripping on the doorstop which was on his side of the bed to keep the door from hitting the bed (put a smaller bed?) it seemed as if the bed took up the entire room...no real space for our suitcases.

The pool had broken chairs, the spa pools (3 of them) all different temperatures and the warmest one became crowded quickly. The outdoor jacuzzi ice cold the indoor jacuzzi policed by the spa - limited by the hours of the spa 10-6p.

This place is far from town - a $15 US cab ride to town each way and the only food nearby is the hotel restaurant which is OVERPRICED and ok and adds surcharges x 2 ...every meal for us cost us 50+ US without a tip.

We booked a morning trip from the hotel through their GO adventures desk for walking (hike) tour of Arenal volcano the morning we were to leave was drizzling and foggy and the guide offered to postpone in case the weather cleared up - said we could try to head out at 1p or even 3p that afternoon....because if we went at that time we would not see anything on our walk. Low and behold it cleared up and we were in the Lobby and they were not....we chalked it up to our own loss - but still left a bad tast in my mouth...do not offer if you are not willing to provide. They got to walk away with $106 US for myself and my husband. Needless to say I would say ultimately of the 3 places I visited in Costa Rica this was the worst and Monteverde the nicest...This place is the epitome of a tourist TRAP.

This didn't really feel like a hotel or a resort- our little bungalow felt more like camping. It was very rustic and as a result didn't feel all that clean. The A/C also didn't work very well and frequently went out.

On the other hand, the views are fantastic. Worth it just for that. We also weren't in the hotel much because there is soooo much to do in the La Fortuna area, and Montana is located very close to it all (especially if you have a car- everything is within 10 minutes or so).

The free breakfast was pretty good and they had plenty to choose from, but I would recommend going into town for all other meals. The food here was extremely overpriced for such small portions, and there are a lot of great options just down the road in La Fortuna.

We were pleased with this hotel. ROOM & GROUNDS: Our individual room had a front porch with a table/chairs and two rocking chairs. It also had a back deck that looked out over beautiful green hills. The room was a little dated and in need of some updating. It could have also used some extra counter space. We would have had a perfect view of the volcano had it not been for the clouds everyday! The grounds were very nice. We spent some time in the hot springs on the property. It was nice nice temperature but not as warm as you would have expected it to be. FOOD: We only had breakfast at the hotel and it was very nice. There was an omelet station, hot foods, fruit and fresh juices. STAFF: I give the staff an A+! Very professional, accomodating and extremely friendly. LOCATION: The hotel is about 15 minutes from "downtown" La Fortuna. From Liberia airport, once you reach Fortuna Lake, it was about a 1 1/2 hours drive around the lake until you reach the hotel. You REALLY don't want to drive at night. Our GPS took us in the wrong direction and ended up having to drive at night. It's very mountainous, sharp turns and tight curves. Be sure to bring a map along with your GPS because the GPS will loose it's signal at some points and there are no street signs once you leave the main highway.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 243 and from what I understand, they are the better rooms
