“Not what we were expecting.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

This didn't really feel like a hotel or a resort- our little bungalow felt more like camping. It was very rustic and as a result didn't feel all that clean. The A/C also didn't work very well and frequently went out.

On the other hand, the views are fantastic. Worth it just for that. We also weren't in the hotel much because there is soooo much to do in the La Fortuna area, and Montana is located very close to it all (especially if you have a car- everything is within 10 minutes or so).

The free breakfast was pretty good and they had plenty to choose from, but I would recommend going into town for all other meals. The food here was extremely overpriced for such small portions, and there are a lot of great options just down the road in La Fortuna.

We were pleased with this hotel. ROOM & GROUNDS: Our individual room had a front porch with a table/chairs and two rocking chairs. It also had a back deck that looked out over beautiful green hills. The room was a little dated and in need of some updating. It could have also used some extra counter space. We would have had a perfect view of the volcano had it not been for the clouds everyday! The grounds were very nice. We spent some time in the hot springs on the property. It was nice nice temperature but not as warm as you would have expected it to be. FOOD: We only had breakfast at the hotel and it was very nice. There was an omelet station, hot foods, fruit and fresh juices. STAFF: I give the staff an A+! Very professional, accomodating and extremely friendly. LOCATION: The hotel is about 15 minutes from "downtown" La Fortuna. From Liberia airport, once you reach Fortuna Lake, it was about a 1 1/2 hours drive around the lake until you reach the hotel. You REALLY don't want to drive at night. Our GPS took us in the wrong direction and ended up having to drive at night. It's very mountainous, sharp turns and tight curves. Be sure to bring a map along with your GPS because the GPS will loose it's signal at some points and there are no street signs once you leave the main highway.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 243 and from what I understand, they are the better rooms

We arrived at Montana del Fuego and found it very nice looking. But then looks can be deceiving. The check in staff was very pleasant. The room was a nice size but with only a double bed and clean but in disrepair. After the super comfy king size bed in Monteverde this was a big let down, we slept horrible all 3 nights here. The safe wasn’t even bolted to anything, I could have walked out with it. The security chain was barely hanging by 1 screw. The back sliding door barely opened and closed. The front set of windows was screwed shut. The first morning we had no hot water and no working light in the bathroom. They had used so much room freshener that I had an asthma attack. Dinner at the hotel was expensive and not very good, small portions. The wait staff was rude and made frequent snide comments under their breath

just came back from our honeymoon, visited Montana de Fuego for 1 wk. My husband and I had a wonderful time at the the hotel. The WHOLE Staff was absolutely nice and attentive. Everyone has such a positive attitude. There Spa Gadi is great. There breakfest is also great located in a beautiful setting facing the volcano. The weather was amazing we had clear skies the whole week. I found that the location is nice and quiet and well protected and taken care of. They have some beautiful plants and flowers, there landscaping is very well taken care of. The pool is clean and there bar is real good too. la Fortuna town is about 10 mins away and is nice to walk around and try typical food. Also if your trying to find a bargain on tours such as rafting, ziplining etc go to fortuna you will find great deals and they are willing to negotiate the price. Overall we had a great time and enjoyed our stay as newly weds.

We were with a tour, so had no say in lodging. The rooms were clean, but showing signs of age and lax maintenance. The units facing Arenal (where we stayed) are the oldest. The older units are also near a busy road, making them noisier. There are newer units farther up the hill that looked to be in better shape. The units over the water shown in a lot of the pictures are the minority. There are few of these as the lake is man made. The location near the volcano was good, would have been better if the volcano was still active! There is a spa and pool on the grounds, which I did not use. There are nature walk paths, which I did use. They are well maintained and easily walked. The howler monkeys are a bit loud, but that's what we came to see/hear. We had breakfast at the on sight resteraunt, which was hot and plentiful. The one dinner we had here was also above average. It is near the town of La Fortuna, but not walking distance. The town is touristy, but worth a wonder around.

Room Tip: If I'd had a choice, I'd have picked a room farther from the road, on one of the newer units...

Stayed in room #220 (one of the 1st after the reception). Fabulous view of the Arenal volcano and we were lucky with clear/sunny days for the 2 days here. Grounds are beautiful, lots of birds, flowers, trees just loved it! Hotel a bit far from the center of La Fortuna but we were on a tour and just followed the guide/bus.

The hotel itself is made up of all individual "huts". Ours had a "cathedral" ceiling but no lighting to speak of (which others confirmed). Large room with a king bed, all pretty clean if a little outdated furniture-wise. Had a mini-fridge, AC, large bathroom but shower head a little primitive. Would have preferred windows with screens as the outside air is wonderful but had to use the AC as the windows didn't open and the door did not have a screen option.

Had the breakfast buffet and it was really nice - lots of choices and waitstaff friendly & helpful (it always helps when you throw in a few "holas", "por favors" & "gracias").

Did not use the facilities as we were away most of each day but did walk around early in the morning and found the paths & byways so beautiful & peaceful. It was so nice to hear the gardeners singing among themselves as they raked away in the gardens. And that's also when we spotted our first green parrots flying around!

Room Tip: Based on what others in our group said, it seems there was differences in the quality/layout of the...

It has been a few years since we stayed here for one night in spring. We enjoyed our stay, the pools, and the breakfast. We stayed in one of the buildings that has rooms on two floors, and we stayed on the second floor with a balcony view. Enjoyed our stay.
