“Great View - insist on newer rooms - beware of tour operator”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

This hotel has great views of the Volcano, but pretty much anywhere in La Fortuna does. They have great new rooms, but also some pretty lousy older rooms. We were lucky enough to stay in one of the newer ones, but heard from those that stayed in the older ones of bad smell and not enough space.

The hotel has 3 swimming pools, one of which is a kids pool, and 3 hot spring pools. Also has a pond on its grounds, which was home to many different birds.

Their breakfast is wonderful, with many options. The food at their restaurant is good, with large portions. The prices and choices are similar to what you would find in town, maybe a few dollars more, but with the cost of the cab ride into town its better to stay and eat at the hotel.

The tour operator in the lobby, sells the same packages as many in town, however they are at least $10-15 more expensive. We booked one tour with them to the hanging bridges, and when we got there our reservations weren't there. We paid our own way, and are in the process of trying to get our money back.

The hotel staff is nice, but they agree to almost anything, but sometimes they cannot deliver, in which case they will apologize with a smile. We would have rather them tell us up front if something was not possible so we can make other arrangements.

Over all a good stay, the only drawback is it is a $15 cab ride into town which is a bit far.

Room Tip: Ask for newer rooms

“Extraordinary views of Arenal Volcano”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

Stayed here for 3 nights with my wife on recent trip to La Fortuna. First off, Costa Rica, GO!!!! The Country is beyond beautiful. The hotel is situated close to the base of Arenal. Beautiful view of the entire volcano from out room, with clear and sunny days each day we were there. As for the hotel itself, nothing exceptional, but also, nothing to realy complain about. Yes, a little on the run down side, but given that we were outside every day with hiking, rafting, etc, just about only thing we did was sleep there. Only real complaint was we had a couples massage one afternoon, and it was weak at best. Really just a bunch of oil rubbed onto our bodies with no real massage effort. Go to La Fortuna, go see Arenal, hotle is ok, probably better places in the area.

“Older....but a tranquil gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

My spouse an I stayed here for one night (Feb 2013) during our visit to Arenal.

The hotel is not new. It is a little tired looking, but this didn't bother us at all. I really enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and gardens. Since my spouse and I are avid photographers, the numerous birds around the hotel were a big plus for us. I highly recommend this place for older couples that are looking for some relaxation.

Breakfast was included with our stay and it was top notch. Great assortment of food: fruit, rice, beans, eggs, bacon, waffles, etc. Everything was very fresh and tasty.

Room Tip: I stayed in room 252. I loved the location because it was close to the hot springs and trail.

“Beautiful volcano views-quite a distance from town.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

This is a lovely property with wonderful views of the Arenal volcano. The staff, especially, Reyner, was very helpful. The pool is lovely as are the grounds.
Our room, a junior suite, had a nice patio overlooking the garden with the volcano in the background. The furniture is a little "tired" but the room had nice amenities-refrigerator, microwave, and safe.
Happy hour-poolside-4 PM to 5 PM was very nice.
Cons: a $15 to $20 taxi ride to town. No restaurants within walking distance with the exception of the on-site restaurant.
Food-on-site restaurant-breakfast was OK. We had a very mediocre dinner-billed as a chef special-3 types of beef that were flambeed with a variety of local veggies. The meat was very tough and not flavorful.

“Air Conditioning was broken and they "couldn't understand" that we wanted it fixed, no hot water in the shower, and they don't h”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013 via mobile

They badger you to sign up for tours. When you want to just do something on your own (and not pay $200 to walk through the forest) they pretend like you are crazy and don't know where any trails are.

They took away our de-humidifier then pretended not to know what we were talking about when we wanted it put back in the room.

About the only good thing was the breakfast.
