A friend and I stayed at Tabacon for two nights and wished we'd had more time to enjoy all the aspects of this beautiful resort. The hotel contains an incredible thermal springs complex complete with one of the most beautiful spas in Central America. The location, near the Arenal volcano, is perfectly suited for exploring the rainforests and cloud forests of the area.
The rooms of the hotel are large and feature a nice array of amenities including in-room safes, robes, DVD player, desk/work area and LARGE bathroom. If you forgot anything the generous amenities tray will probably have it.
Although expensive for Costa Rica standards, the food and beverage options at Tabacon were excellent. We ate at the restaurant on the hotel property as well as the one at the springs - food quality and presentation were excellent - on par with top notch restaurants stateside. In addition to the courses one ordered, both restaurants offered amuse bouche offerings in between courses. The bars were somewhat of a disappointment - overpriced with mediocre cocktails. This is especially true of the two bars within the thermal springs complex.
The real attraction at Tabacon is the thermal springs complex and the spa. The springs alone is worth the higher hotel price. Although non-hotel guests can use the springs, it is not cheap and as a hotel guest one can use the thermal springs from 8am to 10am when it is closed to the public. The Spa is incredible. All treatments are done in open air spa bungalows with the sound of the thermal springs and Arenal volcano eruptions in the background. It is a truly magical place and the treatments my friend and I received were top notch.
I would recommend this hotel highly for honeymooners, romantic weekenders, spa fanatics, girls long weekend and anyone wanting a taste of luxury in the Arenal region.
