“Great Location and Thermal Springs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2010

Tabacon would have been a perfect 5 star had it not been for the lackluster service from the staff. Aside from that, it was pretty darn amazing.

The rooms were nice and clean with very comfortable beds. The forrest room felt like we were the only people in the world.

The springs were perfection. Although the main waterfall was down for refurbishment, there were still plenty of places to get lost and enjoy the thermal waters of Volcan Arenal. Just above the main waterfall is a great section with a natural bottom with lots of volcanic sand and suit. I took this opportunity to rub it all over my body for some free exfoliation and a great massage....my skin never felt so smooth,

I would highly recommend staying at Tabacon just for the sheer convenience. The springs are included in the room rate and it is perfectly located between La Fortuna and Arenal National Park.

The hotel is nice. Rooms are comfortable and nicely appointed The Spa is very nice. The prices are as high, if not higher than isn the USA, but the treatments are first class. All of the treatments are done in very comfortable outdoor tents in the rain forest where the sounds of birds and rushing streams are very relaxing.
When staying at the hotel, the entrance fee to the hot springs is included. It is a short shuttle ride or a 5 minute walk to the park. The springs are very relaxing and the individual pools and waterfalls are varying temperatures from tepid to surprisingly hot.
There is a warm water pool with a swim up bar that serves drinks and bar food. I recommend the mixed ceviche.
Unfortunately, the food in both restaurants is very, very disappointing. In Los Tucanes, the ala carte restaurant, the food was very poorly prepared. It was a little better at the buffet. The bar is fairly expensive. The restaurants are expensive for the quality. I would be glad to pay the price for a great dinner, but these restaurants are mediocre at best.

My husband, daughter (12 years old), son (9 years old) and I frequently visit Costa Rica. During those trips we usually visit new places, however, Tabacon is the resort that we MUST always return to during all our visits. The beatiful thermal pools surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation captivates all your senses. The kids love hiking along the many trails to explore and discover more pools. Plus, we can't get enough of the water slides. The massages I've gotten at the spa are one of the best I've ever had. I usually get spa gift certificates for christmas b/c I love massages, so I've tried so many places, including some of the most exclusive spas in NYC, but none come close to the experience I had at Tabacon. If you're visiting Costa Rica, Tabacon is a resort you MUST NOT MISS.soo

Tabacon was wonderful! The hot springs access makes it totally worth the somewhat pricey room rate. The room we stayed in was very nice and comfortable with a direct view of the volcano. The staff was very friendly and very helpful with directions and information. Having access to the amazing hot springs in the evenings after exploring all day was absolutely wonderful. The hot springs are just a beautiful as they look in the photos on the hotel web site. We did not eat the any of the on-site restaurants since we wanted to try more local flavor dining so not sure about those. I would definitely stay here again and recommend, especially for those looking to relax in a beautiful setting.

We had seen pics of Tabacon prior to our trip but once there we realized that the pics didn't do it justice. If you are a nature lover you will fall in love with Tabacon. Located at the base of the Arenal volcano it has a privileged location. Fed by natural hot springs from the volcano, the resort has multiple natural pools of warm, hot and very hot water. These are in the midst of a lush vegetation typical of a rain forest. If you want to hide these pools are perfect. We spent 3 days and in many instances it felt like we owned the whole place. For those of you wanting more social interactions there is a huge pool with a wet bar and a water slide. There is also a refreshing cold water natural pool too.
The spa was wonderful. We both needed to disconnect and the massages were just perfect. You can do couples massages or individual ones. I highly recommend the hot stones. The setting is very relaxing listening to the water run, the birds calling etc. We had originally planned to use the hotel as a base to explore and do other stuff like the zip line and white water rafting but once there we changed our plans. It seemed such a waste to leave the hotel to do other stuff. At night if you are lucky and there aren't many clouds you can actually see the lava flow from the volcano it is a spectacular sight. Our only regret was not being able to spend a couple more nights in this paradise. We really look forward to our return trip.

I recently spent 3 days in Tabacon with my wife and 2 young children. We could not have had a better experience! My kids loved the gardens and hot springs, rooms were fantastic, and the staff could not be friendlier. I was impressed with their attention to my children, how friendly the whole group was, and how attentive everyone was, especially the staff at the restaurants and front desk. We came all the way from Argentina and loved our Costa Rica trip, especially the time spent in Arenal and Tabacon. For families with young children (but active), I recommend visiting the Fortuna Waterfalls and the Hanging Bridges. But Tabacon is a must and the hot springs are by far the best in Costa Rica!

It depends what you're looking for in a hotel whether you'll like this place or not. It aspires to be 4-5 star and it is lovely, but not quite there. The service at breakfast, if you don't go for the buffet, is horrid. Like many resorts, they're geared for you to serve yourself at the buffet and react slowly to ordering off a menu.

The beds are excellent. The room and its amenities are above average.

The benefit to staying at Tabacon is that you can use the hot springs without admission fee. The hot springs are down the street from the hotel and have a shuttle if you don't want to walk. The hot springs are beautifully landscaped and very relaxing.

The spa associated with the hot springs are lovely, but no bargain. The services are priced at the same levels as big city US spas. Don't expect to get a bargain, but do expect an exceptionally beautiful setting and very good service.

So, if you're willing to splurge....it's a pleasant stay. If not, stay elsewhere and pay the admission fee to the hot springs.
