“It's about the place, not the place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2004

I spent 10 weeks in Cosat Rica and about 1 week in Arenal. This entire town is amazing and still rather mellow. I did go during November though which 5 years ago was the low season (may still be). The springs are an all day trip. The restaurant food is ok, but the springs themselves are a winding immaculate garden of beautifal flora and endless cascading hot water. We stayed in town (Arenal, La Fortuna) and easily hitched to the resort on a dump truck! Hitchhikking is still ok here if you are with 1 or 2 other people. Anyway, hike towards the volcanoe and you will see live vents pumping out sulfur gases and a large green lagoon. But the real adventure is climbing part way up the mountain. We were just below a lava flow and didn't even know it due to cloud cover. What an amazing place though even if you don't need the extra rush of standing on a live volcanoe. You can just sit all day in different pools and get drinks from the garden bar. Try the Guarro sour and watch out!

My husband and I stayed at the resort for 1 night several years ago. I had been studying in San Jose for a few weeks and had asked a travel agent for one of the nicest places they could find me because my husband was coming to visit for a few days. She suggested this place and the Parador. We only had time to go to the springs one afternoon. We wished we had spent more time there. The springs are wonderful, other than that there is not much else to do for kids. We are planning on going again this fall and are only planning to stay at this resort and spend several days at the springs and enjoy our time together.
(We will be celebrating our 31 st anniversary.)The hotel was very clean and nicer than many other hotels we have stayed in. We have traveled quite a bit overseas and have to say that this place was one of our favorites.

My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary last year and we both absolutely loved it. I cannot imagine anyone NOT loving this place - it is paradise. The rooms were above average, the bathrooms were beautiful - even the toilet paper was scented with sandalwood. The rooms were always clean and I only saw a maid on the very last day as we were checking out. Beautiful terraces, some overlooking the volcano. We ate at the springside (open air) restaurant every day and NEVER had a meal that was less than delicious however, we did always ask our waiter for his recommendation (speaking Spanish definitely helps). I found all the service to be great but keep in mind things move at a slower pace in most Latin American countries.

The SPA was absolute perfection. My husband and I had mud wraps and then they led us to a private, secluded part of the hot springs and told us to skinny dip together to wash off all the mud. Skinny dipping under the stars surrounded by beautiful flowers and dense foliage...does it get any better? Well it does, as the facial and aroma therapy massage were just the perfect way to round out the evening - all for less than $100. You get a discount on spa treatments when you're a registered guest.

If you are expecting down comforters, wireless internet access and high tea...stay somewhere else but if you want to experience the true beauty of the nature of Costa Rica and the awesome hot springs - STAY HERE.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Tabacon at the end of January, 2004, and had a wonderful time there. The suites with a jacuzzi are well worth the extra expense, although our view of the volcano was just a bit too obscured. The room was large and nicely furnished, the staff very friendly and helpful, and the daytrips are a must. Try the horseback ride to the volcano, it's unforgettable. My only complaint was that you have to wear an annoying bracelet throughout your stay there. My girlfriend's only complaint was the exceeding large spider (about the size of my hand) on the outside wall of our building, but hey, it's Costa Rica and that's to be expected. The food was very good, the hot springs very relaxing, and it is far and above the best lodging in the region.
