“Very Special Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2014

We loved our stay at Tabacon Grand Spa and Thermal Resort:
HOTEL:
pro- The service here was impeccable. The hotel staff seemed happy to be there and went out of their way to be ambassadors for Costa Rica. Each person was a mini tour guide and shared their enthusiasm for the country, flora, fauna and Tabacon. This really made our stay pleasurable.
The room service burgers were excellent!! Highly recommend.
con- there was no outdoor space for the rooms. It would have been nice to sit out on a little patio or balcony to enjoy the views. Secondly, there was no comfortable seating in the rooms. There was plenty of space for a sofa or loveseat facing the garden windows in our space.
Would be nice to have cheaper food options. Took a cab to La Fortuna for $38 US dollars for mediocre food at Nene's.
SPRINGS-
PRO- loved everything about this place. It is magical and beautiful and my skin felt great for days afterwards. Loved the Shangri La area for hotel guests. It was romantic and we spent most of our time there. The lockers and shower areas were very clean. It felt like an exclusive club.
CONS- none!!!

Room Tip: We had a garden room and were completely happy with it; except as noted above.

Dear CarolK512

We really appreciate your comments, thank you for your preference! Our staff is always there to provide the highest quality service and pay attention to every detail in order to create memorable experiences to our valuable guests. We are glad you enjoyed our thermal resort which in fact has been recognized as one of the best worldwide, thanks to its exuberant gardens and the natural hot spring river that emerge naturally from Arenal Volcano. Shangri-La Gardens is our secluded and exclusive area for hotel guests older than 18 years. If you stay multiple nights we have special deals including services such as meals or spa bonus. We would love to have the honor to serve you again in a near future!

Kindest Regards

This is indeed one of the best places and hotels seen in my life. Everything is simply perfect.

Starting from the check in, the golf CAR that brings you to your room, the big and confortable standard rooms.. And the amazing hot springs!

You have to eat one night at the tucanos restaurant in the resort... One of the best i've been to... You will spend 2 perfect days!!!

Dear lorenza m

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, we firmly believe that every single detail is part of Tabacon experience. From the beautiful Costa Rican scenery, a warm welcome with a tropical cocktail, the room details, our food and beverage selection and the hot springs are key moments in which your experience becomes more enjoyable. Los Tucanes Restaurant is our fine-dining option in the heart of the rainforest, our chef creates a culinary experience with the most succulent ingredients, we are extremely glad that you enjoyed your dinner. We are totally grateful for your preference and we look forward to serve you again in the near future.

Sincerely

The hot springs area itself was amazing. I would definitely spend time there...we spent a whole 2 days there and it didn't get old (we were on our honeymoon). And as a hotel guest you have access to the Shangri-La Gardens and the cabanas there and it was pretty relaxing and romantic. We loved it!

However, the hotel portion of the resort could be better in terms of customer service for how much you're paying. Everytime we called about something that was meant to be a part of our "romantic breeze package", we were told it would be sent to our room immediately and an hour later still nothing. Even after several phone calls and the same replies and a lot of waiting, we couldn't get anywhere and ended up asking for a manager. If the staff knows something is unavailable or will take a while to sort out, they should have let us know straight away instead of leading us under false pretences and probably should have called us back so we weren't waiting around for nothing!

Also, noone seemed to know we were a part of the "romantic breeze package", so we kept getting asked to pay for stuff we had already paid for. We even had to remind them we were on our "romantic dinner" DURING our romantic dinner!

The cleanliness of the resort is great and the suites themselves are lovely.

These thermal springs are beautiful and very relaxing. We saw lots of couples like us but also families too. The atmosphere was overall relaxing. I would suggest to bring water shoes to protect your feet in the natural springs. We purchased a dinner pass 6pm to 10pm through there online wesite which cost 70 per person. $50 Locker and $20 towel rental deposit are quite expensive as of 8-5-14 but it was returned if you don't lose their items. The food at the buffet and the drinks at the bar were delicious. I can't comment on the hotel because we didn't stay at their hotel.

Room Tip: Wear water shoes in thermal spas

Dear Justine88803

Your comments are very much appreciated. We are glad you enjoyed your Night Pass Package to our thermal resort. Tabacon features an amazing natural setting where the rainforest, the hot springs river and lush gardens combines to offer the perfect complement for an unparalleled Costa Rican experience. Our entrance fee to the thermal area includes towels and lockers what we request is a deposit that is reimbursable when our guest returns the locker key and towel. Every night at Ave del Paraíso Restaurant we have an international theme buffet, we are pleased to know you enjoyed it. For Day Pass visitors, we offer several special deals where price depends on the services that are included depending on guest preferences, please notice that all our hotel guests receive complimentary entrance to the thermal area during their stay. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us, we hope to serve you again in the near future.

Kindest regards

The hotel itself was ok but the resort/spa/hotspring was exceptional. Nothing else in the world like it. but you can just pay $65 to visit the hot springs for the day pass. The room was ok. The staff was pretty nice. View was pretty nice aswell but when i went it was cloudy so we couldnt really see the volcano too much. The hotels resturants and drinks are crazy expensive and taxed!!! But overall my boyfriend and i had a really good experience, not our favorite tho.
BTW be ready to walk or wait for a golf cart to get from your room to anywhere in the hotel. Also you need to catch a shuttle to get to the hotsprings/spa area. Kinda a mission but it was fine. I would stay somewhere else next time....

Please keep in mind, this review is of a 5-star resort, not a Hampton Inn. Reception, fine. Room, OK, although bathroom needs update. View, spectacular. Food, acceptable. Hot springs area, really without equal, incredible. What was lacking? Two major issues: dining options. No snack bar or other less than full meal option. At $40 and up per meal, this is a problem. #2, laundry. The local activities involve a lot of water and dirt, but laundry prices start at $2.50 for underwear (!!??!!). This resort should have complementary washers and dryers, or at least coin laundry available. Note, you are somewhat captive here as it is $20 each way cab fare to town for cheaper dining options also. Kind of felt nickel and dimed to death by the time we left. Oh, wifi was excellent.

Room Tip: Top floor of whatever building.

Just got back from Arenal where we stayed at Tabacon.
We had a "superior room with king bed" and it was great (we asked for a volcano view if possible, and were able to get it-see pics). We were greeted with fresh justice drinks when we checked in and all the staff were really friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Beautiful landscape throughout the hotel and the pool near our room was also clean and great. We also payed for the breakfast which was a little pricy but it was really worth it. The breakfast buffet had lots of choices, both local food and more american/international food.
The only small complaint we would have is the room walls seemed thin, when we were in the room we could hear the tv and the people in the rooms next to us. We weren't in the room much so it was not a major issue for us.
The spa was just down the road (they provide a free shuttle if you dint feel like walking) and was also beautiful and clean. It can get a little busy but it was big enough to still find areas to relax in the pools without a big crowd. Had dinner at the spa the last night, which was okay enough, we would of probably preferred to go into town if we had the time (both for better food and better price).

Overall, great service and would definitely stay there again if we had the choice…and get the breakfast!

Room Tip: ask for a room with a volcano room if possible! And get the breakfast!
