“Down to earth amidst tourist-mania”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

Mr. Lava Lava provides an extremely comfortable stay at a very very affordable rate in the midst of a place that has more tourists than you might care for. Because of this, most places in the area are overpriced and cheesy. In his simple establishment, Mr. Lava Lava has very clean accommodations as close as any other major establishment. He himself is friendly and honest. This was a perfect bridge between our trip from Monteverde to the Sarapiqui Valley.

First of all, we have stayed at la fortuna in this hostel for 4 nights and we like it very much. We have created this review because it is not easy to find info on this place except in the costa rica lonelyplanet 2009 or 2010 edition.

The cleaness of this place is just perfect. Both bathrooms are cleaned every morning and so the showers. There was no bugs at all inside and the beds was very clean. They brought us new towels and bed sheets that smelled good (clean). It is the only place we did in costa rica where we we're sure the bed sheet was cleaned. In over all, this place is clean and its worth a 4.5 stars.

The sleep inn guest house as a very good location. First of all, it is at 200 meter from the super mega mercado (grocery store with very good price), wich is also the bus station. Its neer the mean street and in front of a church, not to noisy during the night. It is not well knowed when we went there, so if you ask direction and people doesnt know, ask for gringo pete's wich was at maybe 75 meters before the sleep inn guest house (go up the little hill).

We went in 2012 and we paid 10 $ per night for a couple(5$ per person per night) and we had access to the kitchen wich is really basic but had all what we needed, shared bathroom, computer(internet). We suggest to go buy some food and do your own super, because the restaurants in this area are not typical food(of what we saw).

The reason why we liked this place so much its because of the owner. We had a great time chatting with him, he answer at all possibles questions that we had and he even send us in the best place where we ate in Coste rica ( ask him about the best place in town for chicharones - Best porc we had to eat in the world). He REALLY care about the satisfaction of his guest, he's easy to contact and always answer to his cellphone. Is guest house is a familly business, it is not very big, but it is cosy and we felt just like home. Personnaly, we prefer to live in a more simple or basic accomodation then in a 5 star hotel BUT even in a five star hotel, there will be no carlos. :) OH, there is a nice gallery with four rocking chairs.... during the night, having a cold beer sitting there is very fun. Plus, in front you have a view of some very nice three.

He did us great prices ,probably the best that you can have. He deals with the compagny he works for, wich is eagle tour, a trusted tour dealer. We did The arenal trek ( really interesting with a great guide) + the Baldi hot spring (55$, the price can change!) and we went and cameback to Monteverde to do conopying with extremecanopy and we had a great time.

There is a nice photo of all tours and shuttle he offers and the shuttle are at very good prices! we paid big time bucks (300$ with a tour dealer in cahuita for a special taxi to go straight to la fortuna when you can have a shuttle for the same distance but 50$ per person!) It is possible to arrange the shuttle in advance by contacting carlos by email misterlavalava@hotmail.com. It might be possible for him to go get you in another town and bring you back in la fortuna. He laught at our story of special taxi at 300$ and felt sorry for us.

We stayed at the Sleep Inn Guesthouse for 2 nights and we had the place for ourselves. The rooms are basic and the bathroom (shared) is ok, hot water is available if you know how to use Costarican Showers :)
The tours proposed by Carlos are all worthwhile and at a fair price (we compared of course with other tour operators) and the more packages you take at the same time, the cheaper it gets. We also ordered the transfer jeep-boat-jeep to monteverde with the extremo canopy (incl. Superman) tour there (i totally recommend it) all in all for 55$/person.
Carlos was hilarious and always had good stories and you may also learn how to speak "ma'hi'ho" if your fortunate enough or hear about argentinians in CR. FAFAJORES!! :)
