“The BEST place to stay in Costa Rica!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

My experience at Arenal Hostel Resort was hands down the best I have ever had in all my travels. It's not just that the place itself is amazing, but its the people there who create such a great vibe. When we arrived, the host, Jesse came to talk with us and throughout our stay he was always there to help us out and he booked our tours and transportation and even got a massage therapist to come to my room! The cooks there are fantastic and they offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner for way cheaper than anything you will find in town...and it's authentic food too! (or if you want they have communal kitchen you can use to cook your own food) They have a full bar and a pool and the bartenders are all really friendly, fun people. But the thing that really makes Arenal Hostel Resort so unique is Alonso, the Jungle Man. There are tons of companies in town who offer tours of the volcano, but going with Alonso is not just a tour....he has first hand experience of being at the top of the volcano, has spent time with indigenous cultures who lived there, and talked to many of the survivors from the first eruption. He can teach you things about the nature there that you will never get from any other tour.
On our last night in the hostel we had a big BBQ and a party, we got to know a lot of the other guests staying there and had a great time with all the workers. The people staying there were not only backpackers like us but also families and people of all ages....the place truly has something for everyone!
To Jesse, Alonso, and everyone else who works at AHR, you guys are amazing and we are going to miss you so much! I wish you all success and hope to share some drinks with you again one day!

Looking for a low cost alternative, this hostel is a great alternative. Although the water pressure, temperature shower drains leave a lot to be desired, the location, amenities and rooms are great for the price. The breakfast was great too. I would highly recommend this to the Hotel Jihel, which costs moe and offers a lot less.

I stayed here with my young daughter and we loved it! The first night we arrived there was a crazy, fun party going on. Yes, it was loud when we finally threw in the towel to go to sleep. No, it did not bother me. This is a hostel. It's fun. And it doesn't happen there every night there.

The staff is so helpful. They actually planned a couple of activities there at the hostel for my daughter and another young boy who was staying there. They helped us plan all of our other activities as well - ziplining, hot springs, etc.

The property itself is very nice. And you really can't beat the price. If I ever return to La Fortuna, I would never consider staying anywhere but here and will highly recommend it to anyone who asks.

This hostel really exceeded far beyond my expectations. It’s got that homey small resort style to it that feels very intimate and COZY. Hammocks everywhere, HUGE and clean private rooms with private bath, CLEAN LINENS, kitchen, nice cooling swim in pool/bar for Costa Rica heat, just a perfect place to relax and stay for a couple days in La Fortuna without breaking your BUDGET. Located in the center of La Fortuna so it’s pretty much walking distance to everything like the bus stop from San Jose (Yep, the $5 bus from SJO), groceries, restaurants and shops. No need to worry about booking all your tours because JESSE, the AWESOME host of this hostel, will take care of it and will recommend the best tours available in town for a good price. Most importantly, the staff here are genuinely nice, accommodating, couldn’t be more helpful and not pushy, they give you honest opinions about comparisons between different tours. They also provide laundry and you pay per kilo, not bad. My favorite part of this hostel is the activities they do each night. They invite all the guests to come to the bar and do a FUN activity (like Bingo and BBQ night) that will make you mingle and get to know other travelers. It was very ENJOYABLE to meet and just have a good time with different people from around the world. The drinks in the bar are very cheap, everything is pretty much around 2 bucks. Props to Jesse and all of the staff for the WONDERFUL times Costa Rica.

Don’t think twice, just BOOK IT! Highly recommended! :)

What a fun hostel! The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming to all travelers - young and, ahem, middle-aged. The festive grounds are full of palapas, hammocks, and a bar with a swim-up pool. The rooms are nice and the second floor, where I stayed, had a terrific view of the Arenal Volcano. The rocking chairs were a pleasant surprise and rocking and talking and drinking wine with family and friends was one of my best memories. Jesse (host), Andres, and Alfonse were kind and helpful - and made me feel right at home.

Room Tip: Second floor overlooking the grounds also has a great view of the volcano.

Had a great time here. We are a group of four friends, first place we stayed in Costa Rica and it was a brilliant start to the holiday! Jesse the manager is a hardrocking gent who couldn't have been more helpful. We booked a couple of tours with them and were really happy - Alonso the junlge man is a brilliant tour leader. Place felt safe and was laid back but with a fun vibe. Though we didn't really eat there the food was looked really good and was cheaper than most places in the town! Overall would recommend it! Go there!

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are airier
