“EPIC hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

So...this hike is NO JOKE.
This is for serious hikers only.... As long as you are aware for what you are up to, the YES, this hike is worth it.
*There are two parts- a hike out in the open (very steep) then a hike in the jungle area (lotta steps, roots)
*There is a awesome lagoon at the top as a reward. Breathtaking view of the volcano too
*Bring enough water. Bring a light snack.
*I recommend the hike for early in the day-it increases your odds of seeing the peak of the volcano clearly (I went during rainy season and STILL got the see all the volcano-Yay!)
So if you are prepared.... go and enjoy !

“Great Hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

Its a tough 2 hrs up, but the lake in the crater is beautiful. Just know, as your sweating hard in the heat on the way up, that there is a refreshing lake waiting for you at the top. Great views of Arenal Volcanoe, and surrounding area all the way up. Bring lots of water, good shoes, and a towel!

“Climb a mountain,swim in a crater.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2013

The lodge at Arenal affords an amazing view of the mountain. While the frequent eruptions have stopped for now one may still observe steam coming from several vents. The hike up Cerro Chato is Very strenuous and not recomended for those not regular kiers nor those who may be faint of heart. The decent to the crater lake is steep and scary. The water was fine and the swim most welcome after the climb up and down. I hike often and still I was sore for a few days after this one.

“Tough hike, but a fun one!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

Always wanted to climb Cero Chato, finally did it Friday morning. We heard it was intense and challenging, but having already done Chirripo we thought it was being built up and over estimated. We were wrong, it was a pretty tough hike!

The hike is only 3 KM long, but you climb 600 meters in that stretch so it is pretty steep. Lots of deep steps and uneven terrain, but a great workout. We made it up in about 1 hr 45 mins, back down in about 1 hour or so. At the top we had great views of Arenal, then you can take the path to the left to go down to the green lagoon. Pretty scenic and a good way to work out in the morning before it gets too hot or rains!
