“If you are in good shape, you MUST do this hike.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

As all have said, it's strenuous. No switchbacks, just up. Straight up the mountain. In my opinion, all worthwhile hikes should have a reward at the end, and this one is well worth it: a dip in a beautiful, isolated, emerald green lake. Not every day you get to swim in a volcano. We were the first up (left just after 8 a.m.) and thus had the lake completely to ourselves. It was surreal. Also, great views on the way up prior to entering the forest. Figure 3 1/2 hours round-trip.

“Straight Up!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

This was a fun hike, but be warned, there are no switchbacks. This hike is almost straight up the mountain. The crater at the top was really pretty and we enjoyed being in the rainforest.

“A solid hike, but the reward is worth it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

About 2 hours to go up in extreme heat and humidity but the reward is a great view of the Arenal volcano and a swim into the crater of the Cerro Chato.

“Really Tough hike!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

If you're fit and confident, go for it. Rewarding in the end if you make it to the waterfall. You must be in good shape for this, it will not be a happy time if you're overwhelmed.

“The hike was excellente and I will do it again!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

I can believe how amazing was to be hiking next to flowers, vegetation, frogs and toucans!!! It was so nice!! We took the tour from desafio hike, the guide was pretty explicit and he told us to be aware of the snakes,it was raining so hard! I must suggest to wear hiking boots because the rain is falling on and off and the mud is mixed with the wood (slippery ) you also must take a rain poncho and repellent for the mosquitoes ,our group was very nice but I saw two people falling because they didn't have the proper shoes, also take a lot of water with you!!! At the end the laguna chato is a beautiful paradise !!
