“Fantastic Resort, Pools, and Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

We spent 4 nights at the Springs and found it to be one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at. Pools after pools to pick from all with hot springs water at different temperatures, Waterfalls, slides, so much to do. Great views of the volcano. Beyond all this is Club Rio, right on Rio Arenal. What a undiscovered spot. Folks go down for the inter tubing and the animals which were great. But stay there for at least half a day. Laze by the beautiful tropical river, soak in the springs right next to the shore. The food was great and reasonably priced. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Our cleaning lady folded a towel in the shape of a dog and another in the shape of an elephant. Be prepared to do lots of walking and climb lots of stairs. A wonderful stay and a great resort to go with our other beach stays.

Room Tip: Would splurge for the alta vista room to get a better view over the vegetation.

Wow, just wow! This is one of the nicest places we have ever stayed. It was simply amazing and I cannot imagine that anywhere else in the area could top it. From the moment we arrived, we were in awe of the views, the facilities, the staff. It was simply incredible. Our room had an awesome view of the volcano. It almost didn't look real! Lying in a hammock on our balcony with the volcano view was just great! We traveled with our 2 children, and had booked a suite with 2 bedrooms. It was just perfect for us. The master bath was over-the-top amazing. Then, there are the springs....wow! Each spring we went to had it's own beauty and charm. The setting is just unreal. Romantic and amazing. One spring was even better than the last. My kids, of course, loved the water slide spring. We did some activities at Club Rio, including the animal tour and the tubing down the river. It was great fun with the kids, and the springs in that area of the resort are also just unbelievably beautiful with the foliage and river views. If I had to come up with some criticisms of this resort, it would be that the rooms are a bit of a far walk from the lobby/restaurants. Also the gift shop seemed to open and close at unpredictable times. The restaurants were good, but not totally spectacular in our opinion. And the long road to get to the resort is very bumpy. Those minor criticisms are nothing, though, compared to the beauty and sophistication of this place. The drinks at all of the bars were great, including the shakes and smoothies they made for the kids. This place was just amazing, and we hated to leave. We will never forget our stay here, and would not hesitate to come back someday. We would recommend this resort to anyone! It is wonderful for honeymooners and families. Just perfect!

We are a family of 6, with children ages 5 though 13 and it is so difficult to vacation and please everyone-well this resort is it! We had the most incredible vacation here. The resort is gorgeous, the views of the volcano were unbelievable, the rooms spectacular. The real surprise is the people that work at this resort how genuinely nice and caring they are. We all loved the activities, I highly suggest all of the activities at Club Rio, at the hotel- tubing, kyaking, rock climbing all incredible and so much fun. They always took special care of my five year old, always getting to be involved, but traveled on most activities with a seasoned guide. We all thought the horseback riding was the best we had ever experienced and Nano and all of the horseback riding team were superb at making us feel comfortable and took us on some amazing trails leading us right into the river-could't have been more beautiful (mountain tops with incredible with views of the volcano) or fun! I have to say my husband and I got to experience the spa and wow, I think he had to pry me out of my relaxing chair after our treatment. A very special place indeed.

Our family is still talking about this amazing resort and all of the memories that were made there! Our daughters, 11 and 13, along with my husband and I, were mesmerized by the beauty of the surroundings and all that the resort has to offer. From the amazing springs themselves to the outdoor adventures and the wildlife animal center with unusual animals to the great restaurants and food served(with fabulous desserts!) to the fun family game room where we each found fun no matter what age and to the swim up pool bar overlooking the volcano at sunset, the Springs is first rate!

The Club Rio Outdoor Adventure Center is great and has exciting family tours. We loved the tubing which was challenging and so much fun for the family, as well as the horseback riding in the mountains through rivers and up near the volcano with spectacular views led by fun, caring and safety minded staff running and leading all of the tours. The view of the volcano from the rooms is spectacular and heavenly to awake to each morning. The rooms are luxurious and have every amenity imaginable. The service and housekeeping is excellent...the staff from the bottom up care about their "home" and they take pride to be a part of the resort and to impress their guests and assure a great experience for them.

Each of the 18 Hot Springs is different and offers a unique swim, which kept our children(and us!) entertained for days. It also was an added highlight to all of these amazing things to be hanging around movie stars at the resort...we saw and wound up dining at the same celebrity dinner party with Casey Affleck and his family and got to meet them along with some other actors during our stay. And while swimming in the springs, we were wading along with Sammy Hagar formerly of Van Halen, and had a chance to meet him and run into him around the resort. That was really exciting! There is usally some famous person there at The Springs and after experiencing the first class level of this resort we know why!

These and so many other reasons that could be listed for pages are why the Springs Resort is such a magical and memorable place.... We have traveled all over the world and have even lived in different countries and this vacation to The Springs rivals all others that we have slated as the best over the years. The Springs is a gem in Central America and needs to be on everyone's list as a must experience. We all cannot wait to go back there to paradise at The Springs!

Room Tip: The suites are wonderful with great views of the volcanos and plenty of room for families.

This resort has a beautiful facility and beautiful Hot spring pools. The staff is very friendly, and the activity center at the river on the property offers several fun things to do, including a nature hike, kayaking on the rapids, and seeing monkeys and wildcats in a mini zoo. However, I thought the property was too Americanized, and did not feel as though we were in Costa Rica. Almost all of the guests were families from the USA, and as a Spanish speaker, it was unusual not to hear much Spanish spoken while in a Latin-American country. The views are incredible, but the flip side is that the property is located several miles up a very rugged dirt road. We had a rental car, but psychologically felt discouraged from going out to explore beyond the property because the road was so difficult. As a result, three days would have been a better length of time to stay here rather than a longer period. This is an excellent property for kids, because of the pools, activities, and even a game room with gaming stations set up for free. Finally, we had a room on the first floor, which was correctly advertised as not having much of a view, but I feel that those rooms could be given a fantastic view of the volcano if the management were simply not to plant tall foliage blocking the view.

Room Tip: Spend extra for the rooms above the first floor because our first floor room view was intentionally...

This was our first time to Costa Rica - and traveled with my 24 year old daughter. We arrived at SJO airport, and then took a 3 hour private transport to the resort. The private service did stop about 1.5 hours into the trip at a local restaurant, and we bought souvenirs at the shop next door. The van service was through Desafio - a nice van, with WiFi service and air conditioning. (our driver did not speak English) The ride to the resort is a very long, winding drive through the lush green hills of CR. Beautiful along the way (but if you are at all one to feel motion sickness, then you would need to sit in the front!)

The last road up to the resort is a VERY BUMPY ROAD! When you reach the resort, you are in paradise! This resort is the most beautiful place that I have ever stayed at! The rooms are beautiful, very clean, and our room had a beautiful view of the volcano. We were in room 108. The room had nice robes, the bed was very comfortable, plasma TV, ipod docking station, patio had 2 hammocks, table and chairs, and two leather rocking chairs. There is a hair dryer in the bathroom (leave yours behind), as well as two umbrellas (came in handy).

We did spa services - There you will find a sauna, and steam room - and the facility is beautiful. There is also a fitness room.

In the morning, there is a buffet (or a regular menu) - you might as well pay for the buffet in terms of price. There is also a sushi bar (I think they open after 3), but if you are dining at one restaurant, we found that we also could order off the other menus. They were very accommodating in that regards.

The restaurant Las Ventanas (the fancier one with the view) was very nice - food was excellent there! We enjoyed a lightening show that evening.

We took a taxi service to La Fortuna ($40 R/T). Walked around (take umbrellas - just in case) and bought souvenirs there. A great place to eat (recommended by the locals) is Nene's. Order the tilapia! Or the kabobs (or maybe whatever else is from their specials). The meal was very inexpensive - and a lot of food!!

You can expect to pay 23% on your bill (10% is an automatic tip to the staff), and then %13 goes to the hotel tax (or whatever that is). There is also another line to include additional gratuity if you desire.

We really enjoyed the mineral spring pools! Don't wear white bathing suits! (they'll be orange by the time you leave!)

Definitely pack rain jackets - we needed them off and on every day (but never for too long).

We took advantage of water tubing at the Club Rio (nice time, very pretty there). Also went to the animal sanctuary (not rushed at all, and enjoyed the time spent observing the animals there, and feeding the toucans.

I definitely would recommend The Springs Resort and Spa! I would love to come back to CR!!

My experience at the Springs Resort and Spa started with a long, 3 ½ hour drive from the Four Seasons Peninsula Papagayo. We drove on bumpy, uneven roads until we got there. When my family walked into the open air lobby, I knew that this would be one of the best places I have ever stayed at. There was an immediate perfect view of Arenal Volcano. This volcano is active having erupted in 2010. You can see steam billowing from the top of the Volcano. This was the host hotel for the ABC miniseries, the Batchelor.

Our 3 bedroom suite room was absolutely beautiful. 2 out of 3 bedrooms had a perfect view of the volcano and the flooring was made of Brazilian teak wood throughout. The furniture was upscale and nice and there was more than enough room to put all of our stuff into drawers and closets. One of the 3 bathrooms had a Jacuzzi while all three bathrooms had steam showers. The best part of the room was the Lanai. It had two hammocks, a table for working and relaxing and a perfect gorgeous view of the volcano. This room was the best room I have ever stayed in.

The food at the resort was decent. The sushi restaurant was pretty good and the main restaurant, Las Ventanas was also good. The best thing to eat at Las Ventanas was the Linguini. Also, the Blue Cheese Steak was good also. The breakfast buffet at the Springs was awesome. It was the best breakfast buffet that I have ever been to featuring a chef making omelets and specialty foods and fresh juices.

Here are my ratings for the restaurants:

Las Ventanas: 4.25/5
Ginger Sushi: 3.5/5
Las Cascadas Breakfast: 5/5
Lunch at different places (Laguna, Club Rio) 4.5/5

The Service at the resort overall was very good. One night, housekeeping was late with the turn down service, but most of the time all staff was attentive and wanted to make sure that we had a good stay. Also, I would like to thank Donald at the Laguna Bar, as he is exactly what a customer would want an employee to be while enjoying their stay. He was very conversational, attentive, as well as hilarious. He also gave us tips on what to do during our stay in Costa Rica.

The best thing about the Springs was the Activities and Entertainment. At the Springs, there are 18 natural hot springs and pools, a waterslide, a swim up bar, as well as a kids and adults game room. This made this resort unique as I have never been to a resort with this much to do before. Los Perdidos Springs were the best springs as they were nestled into the rainforest to make it a truly good experience.
Club Rio was also an experience that was very unique. There is whitewater tubing, horseback riding, and a rappelling wall over a waterfall, as well as a jungle cat sanctuary at club Rio which was a shuttle ride away and owned by the hotel. My family did the whitewater tubing here and it was amazing! There is a pretty decent chance that you will fall off the tube as the rapids are pretty strong.

We also did zip lining in the rain forest which was amazing as you are 656 feet high and there were zip lines 0.75 miles long.

Another good thing about the rain forest was the animals: howler monkeys, many varieties of birds, tree lemurs, sloths and many animals were found in the forest. The monkeys yell at you and are very loud.

Final Ratings:

Rooms: 5/5
Food: 4/5
Service: 4.75/5
Activities/Entertainment: 5/5
Club Rio: 5/5
Overall Rating: 5/5

Come to the Arenal Area and stay at the Springs as this trip is the trip of a lifetime. I would like to thank Lee Banks for making this truly awesome resort. This resort is well worth the drive from LIR or SJO and I think everyone in Costa Rica should come here.

Sincerely,
Alex Prindle
