“The Ultimate Trip of a Lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

Just a beautiful, healthy, friendly experience. I wish I could live here and bring all my loved ones. Have never felt better in my life. Wonderful food that really nourishes you. I never felt hungry between meals; have asthma, but could do an hour-long walk without getting winded....pristine air!

Also has spa with a most helpful therapist, personalizing nutritional advice and offering excellent craniotomy-sacral therapy and reflexology as well as massage.

The entire staff was most helpful and friendly, and, again personalizing service. My two grandchildren enjoyed special touches by cleaning and dining staff who added a fun elephant of towels and fresh flowers on their beds (and hearts for adults), and noticed their likes and dislikes and automatically accommodated them at meals. Badges of excellence also to the tour guides, and gift shop and office .

The owners were often at meals, guiding tours, and friendly and available.

Just a wonderful, wonderful experience.

This lodge is perfect if you want to get away from the towns and cities. The location is gorgeous and the tours of the eco-farm were very interesting. The staff were incredibly helpful and cheerful.

If you want to see the volcano, hot springs or go zip-lining, they will help you set up tours (it is a 30 min taxi ride from La Fortuna), but we just relaxed at the farm the whole time on the hammocks. I highly recommend this place.

We found Finca Luna Nueva on trip advisor and we were thrilled with the place from day one but I highly recommend you do your research about this place so you know what you're getting into. This ecolodge is off the beaten path with nothing available as far as other food to eat except the meals the hotel serves. However, we had breakfast and dinner at the hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed all of our meals. The main road to the hotel is bumpy and rough but well worth the trek out there.
We stayed in the family lodge and it was great! There were 2 bedrooms and a main living space with 2 more beds. We had a hot shower which we've found is less than common here. We absolutely LOVED our front porch where we sat watching the birds every morning and watched the sun come up. We ran into a lot of wildlife including the elusive toucan which I have been chasing my entire trip to Costa Rica. The resident sloth appeared during our breakfast one morning and I ran into an armadillo one afternoon.
The pool and hot tub are to die for and will not be soon forgotten. Staff was excellent and accommodating and were very helpful.
We went zip lining in Arenal which is about 35 minutes away and I am so glad we decided not to stay in La Fortuna which is a lack luster city that is very touristy.
I'm under the impression that the people who give this place poor reviews have not done their research about what they're getting themselves into. Be prepared to relax, do some hiking and see some excellent wild life while staying at a beautiful ecolodge that is well maintained!

This Eco Lodge was great, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The retreat is only about 10 minutes off the main road to La Fortuna (which was only 15-20 minutes up the road). The minimal approach was refreshing from the hustle and bustle the two of us come from on a regular basis... We would recommend going on the free farm tour. And make sure you get up to eat their delicious breakfast in the morning.

If you are passionate about nature, healthy life style, conservation, this place is the right choice for you.

Pros: very secluded, beautiful surroundings, nice pool, very nice fresh/healthy and delicious food - lots of fruits and vegetables, pretty nice spacious rooms, super friendly staff, excellent guides, beautiful/inspiring farm, lots of beautiful birds.

Cons: A bit far from town, about a 20 minute drive from La Fortuna area and you have to take a dirt road up to the property for 2.5km.

I've held off from writing this review for quite a while cos we have such very mixed feelings about Finca Luna Nueva! The staff and the setting were absolutely wonderful - and the interns' bio-dynamic farm tour was fascinating. However, we were incredibly disappointed with the food - and as this was a key reason why I'd wanted to go there and we had such wonderful food elsewhere on our trip - this was a massive let down. It was frustrating that there was no other convenient options for food. As others have mentioned, its rather an out of the way place which would have been absolutely fine for us had the food been good - but instead I felt trapped and dreading the next meal!. We were there 3 nights.

Basically I agree with all the other negative comments that have been made about the food - and I really can't understand how people can say it was good!. Perhaps other people who have felt as I do (mixed feelings) have chosen not to post reviews? It was not just overpriced but very meagre portions and really not very tasty or interesting despite the fact you'd expect it should be, seeing as it's fresh produce from the farm. Before going I'd thought that perhaps the food criticisms had come from people who aren't wholefood/salad/fresh-taste kind of people - but we love that kind of food and found this food fell very very short of expectations. In Turkey even a simple tomato tastes devine as they are always so fresh, sweet and taste of sunshine! Not so at Finca Luna Nueva. The food there could be described as "ok local food" (small portions of...) but we actually had much much better local food elsewhere - and there should be plenty of opportunities to add extra home-grown touches (eg why not bean sprouts / avocadoes / fresh herbs? instead of just v v basic lettuce & not much else in the salad). Also the same fish two days in a row was a bit disappointing. No choice so you just have to have what's served - fine if its good but... tough if it's not!

Sorry FNL - I'm expressing my pent up frustration at how let down I felt and want to help manage expectations of other guests in the future. If you don't expect much you won't feel so let down.

Absolutely loved the floral displays and the amazing towel sculptures - and the staff were truly lovely. Please can the management give them more guidance & inspiration in the kitchen so you can be a much better model for quality food & "fresh from the farm" nuitrition.

We thank for the 5 stars on the people and the setting, and we regret that you were dissatisfied with our food. We have had thousands of guests over the years, and we respectfully note that the overwhelming majority love our food - and we think for good reasons. We can name the cow that gives us most of our milk, the eggs come from a hamlet up the rock road from our farm, many of our fruits, vegetables, and greens are grown biodynamically on our farm, we use organic rice grown in Costa Rica, and we cook with high quality olive and coconut oils. Our new chef, Santos, is creative, trained in preparing healthy and fresh food, and he's especially skilled in using our famous ginger and turmeric. Our little cafe features freshly made organic chocolates, and we offer amazing fruit smoothies and ginger ale made from our own organic ginger.

You stayed with us many months ago, and we note the final sentence encouraging the lodge's management to give the kitchen staff more guidance and inspiration. We couldn't agree more - that's our responsibility, and we are grateful for this feedback. Even if thousands of our guests have been delighted with the food, even one unsatisfied guest is one too many. We strive every day to bring locally grown, healthily prepared, reasonably priced, and delicious foods to our guests, and we hope this guest give us another chance. Our fantastic new chef will, we are confident, bring great delight.

Thank you very much.
