My husband & I stayed here for 1 night. It was a very quiet & beautiful place, but it had no A/C. It is a very rustic place & at night I did find ants on the sofa in our room. The room itself was very clean & a good size. I loved just being out at night on the swing at the front porch area of the building relaxing.

The complimentary breakfast was very delicious on the veranda looking out over the property. We didn't get to eat at the restaurant on the property, so I can't comment about the food there.

The staff were extremely courteous. Considering the other options in this area, The Cafetal Inn was most decidedly the best choice. No hotels in the area have A/C. I would love to stay here again but would like A/C.

Our family of five just stayed here for two nights arriving at 6am in San Jose. A driver met us at the airport and brought us to Cafetal (probably a 30 minute drive), in time to settle in to our two spacious and airy rooms, and then we were able to enjoy our sumptious breakfast! What a great way to start our trip to CR!
Breakfast was more than ample: huge platter of fresh fruit, gallo pinto (the best in our whole trip), platanos fried, freshly squeezed fruit juice (pineapple, papaya), french toast, egg dish, never-ending CR coffee. We felt we could have sat outside, listening and watching the birds and iguanas, feeling the fresh breeze, looking out to the countryside, and been perfectly happy.
Rooms had plenty of room for luggage, colorful drapes, chairs to sit on, decent lighting to read by, fans for warm afternoons, wooden beams, and screens for fresh breezes. There were locks for the sliding glass doors but we never used them. Bathrooms were narrow and long, with a good shower, soap provided, shelves for clothes, etc. and two mirrors.
BEST part: waking to the sound of birds, comfy beds, refreshing breeze all day, delicious food for breakfast and great value dinner at night, conscientious owner and staff, large and clean pool for the kids, nearby outings to Doka coffee plantation and La Paz waterfall gardens, meeting delightful travelers.
Overall: GREAT VALUE!, beautiful place, great food, convenient location. We have already rec'd it to our friends!
IF you have MOBILITY issues, request a room in the main building; otherwise, you will need to walk the easy 60 steps from the lower area (near the restaurant and pool) up to the breakfast area. We loved the exercise!

“Great Views”

El Cafetal Inn

We stayed in a room above the restaurant overlooking the pool. Great views. Drive to get there was a bit scary up and down steep mountains. Room was noisy at night above restaurant. Very clean. Helpful staff. Included breakfast. Not much to do in the area. It was good for the one night that we stayed there.

This was a lovely bed and breakfast. The owners greeted us as we arrived and let us look at all the rooms and choose which one we wanted. We chose a large red room with a bay window, a balcony, and a huge bathroom. Since we were visiting in the rainy season, the roads were treacherous, not to mention the way the on-coming drivers cross the center line. Anyway, the house was empty except for one other lady. The owners treated us as if we were their personal guests. One of the owners helped cook the wonderful breakfast of empanadas, potatoes, fruit , eggs and coffee grown right there on the property. It was served on the patio overlooking the pool. There were also a couple cabins down near the pool. The spacious house is in the middle of a coffee plantation, so there are plenty of things to explore, including a river. We saw a tucan in a tree. I would stay here again if we were in the area. I liked it a lot better than the all-inclusive occidental in papagayo.

    • Disliked — The curvy roads leading to it.

My husband and I had a great stay at the El Cafetal Inn in late February. The staff was so friendly, and the landscape is beautiful. Dinner was excellent and well-priced, and breakfast is perfect on the outdoor terrace. I had a coffee massage as well, and Norma was so sweet. The inn is easy to find when you follow the instructions on their website. We will certainly be back!
