I spent three months in Costa Rica in 2006 and had heard wonderful things from several people (people at the Spanish school I was studying with, etc.), regarding Zoo Ave. I went with another woman who was studying at the same Spanish school as I was and we did a walk-through tour.
If you are traveling to other parts of Costa Rica, and are planning to look at wildlife in the WILD, this is not worth the time nor the money. When you know a lot of history and information about the animals in the zoo (if you have already spent time traveling through Costa Rica, with tour guides or whatever), it is really disappointing to see the animals (especially birds) in cages.
It is probably a good place to take smaller children though, as this would be an enjoyable outing for them.
