“outstanding yoga retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2014

Came back from the resort few days ago. I took the 5 day mind body spirit package and deeply regret that I did not take the 7 day package. I really did not want to leave the place. I stayed in Zenda with a friend. The room was very clean and just the right size for two. The yoga in the morning and evening was fantastic and it was taught by different teachers which to me was a plus. Food was outstanding, the chef was very nice and accommodating and was so nice to chat with her as long as I had a translator nearby. all the staff , from the cleaners to the cooks to the reception area employees to the sales person Miguel were very nice and made us feel very welcome. Enjoyed the day tours that they offered and especially the amazing Jenny ( our guide) . She was so knowledgeable . I wish though that the resort would invest in another more comfortable van for the day tours especially one where the guide can sit while she is talking instead of having to stand for over an hour. The scenery of the place is amazing with real kinds of birds singing all the time. Make sure you make use of their outstanding healers. They all have amazing talents.

Room Tip: Try to ask for a room away from the highway. You will defiantly hear trucks and cars at night as we...

Booked a last minute "Mind, Body, Spirit" package for 7 nights. Stayed in a Tentalow. The whole experience was amazing. Loved the yoga classes, the delicious and healthy food, accommodations, and the staff. Beautiful grounds. Very relaxing atmosphere, and enjoyed the people who were here. The day trips were amazing and well planned. The tour guide Jenny is a doll - such a beautiful spirit with a love for Costa Rica. Loved the all inclusiveness of the package, and thought it was a great value. Will return, and would recommend to others. Also loved the proximity of the airport, as its convenient for quick getaways. You certainly did not feel like you were in the city though.

Room Tip: All accommodations looked nice. I was very satisfied with my Tentalow, and would probably stay one a...

My mother, sister and I stayed in the Villa for a week and it was a great experience. The Villa was perfect for 3 as it had 2 twin beds and 1 double bed. The staff is friendly and the food was fresh and tasty. Not a place for red meat eaters, but plenty of chicken, fish and vegetarian options.

I highly recommend the Play FIT class with Pablo and the nail services with Heather. The facial with Katrina was also great. The extra services and day trips can add up, but were all worth the additional fees.

While I'm not in "all-in" yoga person, I sent my wife for her birthday and "surprised" her for a day. In just the one day I was there, it really was amazing. To begin with, they provide excellent and personal transfers from/to the San Jose Airport (SJO). There was a greeter with my name standing right outside immigration, and the driver was just outside baggage claim with my name making it VERY easy to find in the slew of "cabbies" trying to rip you off. The drive is typically only about 20 minutes, but there is a lot of road construction on the way up the mountain to the resort, so it took more like 45. Upon arrival, they carried my bags for me and continued to get me checked in and on my way. My intention for the day was just to spend time with my wife, so we didn't plan anything of the day other than just relaxing and enjoying the slower pace. I was not let down. Every single person that works at this resort genuinely cares about making sure your stay is perfect and they make you feel like your the only one there, remembering your name and always happy and friendly. Should you want to do something more exciting, they do have excursions which are first class, including zip-lining and white water rafting. The food is included which is nice, and is served in a nice hall buffet style that includes only the best food available, nothing processed, and nearly ALL Gluten Free and naturally grown on their land. If you want something extra like a cappuccino, beer, wine, or (what I suggest) coconut water (actually a coconut that they machete the top off of and insert a straw), there is a bar for purchase, and the prices are reasonable (and all in US Dollars, so no need to exchange your money). I did 2 yoga classes, one at night and one in the morning, which were amazing. The yoga rooms are more beautiful than any I've seen anywhere, and have floor to ceiling glass overlooking the San Jose Valley. Both classes are must-dos, as the morning one is at 6:30 and you do yoga as the sun rises, and the night at 5:00, and you do yoga as the sun sets, ending with relaxation in the dark, with only candles in the room and the lights of the city off the end of the room. At night, it does get VERY dark. Many paths have minimal lighting, but take them up on their suggestion of bringing a small flashlight, it will be handy. Shortly after sunset the warm day becomes very cool, and I found it to be a recipe for great sleep! Many argue that there is noise at night, and there is but it is no fault of the resort. First off, there are TONS of animals out there, which make noise, and if you get into your zone, you can use that as part of the ambiance, you are not staying IN the city. Secondly, it seems that many vehicles in Costa Rica have really loud exhaust. I don't even think these vehicles were on the road near the resort, but with the mountains and valleys, it seems that the noise does echo through, which some find disturbing. Personally, it was just so peaceful and relaxing that I just zoned out of it and accepted that there is a bustling city in the distance. About the accommodations: this resort is meant to disconnect you from your everyday. Don't expect the typical US accommodations that include 40 inch TV's in every room including the bathroom and a desk/workstation with super fast internet (there is WIFI, but only in certain areas). That's not what you come here for. There are NO TV's anywhere at the resort. There is electricity, lights, running water with toilets, etc, but if you are thinking about a Spa and Yoga Retreat, take advantage of what it is they are providing... something different than you are probably used to, and let yourself disconnect from your busy, "connected" life, and reset your body. You will appreciate it and feel rejuvenated. Take advantage of the services they offer, which are meant to realign your spirit and mentality, and take advantage of the fact that NONE of us will give ourselves that quality time to disconnect from life.
Overall, with such happy and quality staff, and a beautiful, well kept resort, I HIGHLY suggest checking this place out if your looking for a place to reconnect with your spiritual side and take a time-out from your busy life.

Room Tip: All accommodations are simple in style. We had an A-frame(#306), which was perfect for us and has a...

I wanted a quick getaway to a warm climate, where I could relax, do some yoga and generally just chill out for a few days. At Pura Vida, I got exactly what I was looking for. Please be warned, this is not a luxary resort. So, if that is what you are looking for, go elsewhere. But the grounds are beautiful, the rooms are charming, the food is healthy and generally tasty (although somewhat lacking in variety), and the weather (at least during my visit) was absolutely perfect. There are a few things to be prepared for, however. First, there is a fair amount of noise from the roads just below the property. And the spinklers, which start at 6 a.m., were pretty loud. Both of these things were eased by earplugs; so definitely bring some. Also, bring a small flashlight because the paths around the grounds are not well lit, and it is diffucult to see at night. Finally, there were quite a few bugs crawling around the room (especially ants), which might be a little disturbing to see, but they did not bother me at all. I did not use insect repellant, just Skin-So-Soft. But bring the repellant just in case. Finally, I took 4 yoga classes and I enjoyed them all. At home, I prefer a physically challenging practice, with less emphasis on meditative or spiritual aspects. Pura Vida (in general) has a fairly strong emphasis on spirtual wellness and mediation. Nonetheless, the yoga classes were a good balance of a challenging physical practice and meditation/spirituality.

Room Tip: I stayed in one of the "A frame" rooms, which is actually a one room cottage. It was just...

My intention was to just hang out for two nights, some friends were holding a week long yoga retreat. Ended up staying for four nights, that's all I could be away from work. I drove, it was even difficult to find, thanks GPS! It took a day or so to "land", it didn't seem that special a place, bit of road noise and neighborhood dogs perhaps. That changed without notice into a beautiful 8 acres of quiet serenity, yes. The outside surroundings became muted and it became a beautiful oasis 4500' up the mountain side. Beautiful evening views of the towns below, better still the sunrise over the ridgeline. Walk the coffee fields across the street. A perfect place for any kind of yoga getaway. "House" yoga classes were fabulous in the Lila Hall studio. Never seen a better setting for a class. Mar y Sol lead a class and finished with the most amazing singing crystal bowl you could (not) imagine, absolutely stunning sounds. The food was a great blend of local fresh everything, three times a day. A top professional staff of body workers, therapists etc was worth the price. And a special word to General Manager Eduardo. As a traveler you never think of the emergency that might pop up. I had an allergic peanut reaction to a late evening meal. I didn't fully read the info card displayed, I did not have an epi pen. My responsibilities. But it required immediate attention. Eduardo was reached by staff and was present in 3 minutes. We were in his vehicle and headed to Alajuela Hospital 20 min away. His composure, professionalism and ability to keep the situation calm were truly appreciated. Moreover, he was able to maneuver us through the hospital protocol and received rapid, yes rapid medical attention and treatment. I do not speak more than airport espanol. I am still truly grateful for his being the person who took control of the situation! R & R resorts/Pura Vida Spa has a very special staff waiting to make your stay a memorable and enjoyable experience. Would go back on a moments notice!

Room Tip: I stayed in 105, known as "the standard room". A wooden locked cabin that fits a very comf...

Room 105....Booked into the "standard room". That's how they know it. A wooden cabin surrounded/hidden almost on all sides by fronds and beautiful plantings. A very comfortable bed, felt bigger than a queen. No running water, toilet or mirror, that's just steps down the path. But a great quiet, cozy room priced reasonably.
If you're going as a single it's a great room. Would book it again.
