“Such kind and helpful owners!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2011

My boyfriend and I stayed one night in this hotel in May 2010. We arrived so late (maybe around 10-11p) and the owner was so kind and accommodating. This was the only hotel we booked before departing for our trip and we were pretty much just going to rent a car and wing it. He was so helpful explaining good places to go and took the time to talk to us about Costa Rica even though it was past 11pm. We had a great sleep and waking up to sunshine and the beautiful gardens was so nice. His wife made us breakfast and she was so kind, and Canadian :). We wished we had more time at this hotel to relax on their beautiful property. The town was a bit intimidating with all the gates and barbed wire but we soon learned every town in Costa Rica is like that. We felt very safe at this hotel and we really appreciated how kind and helpful the owners were. We'd definitely stay here again if we need a place to stay near the airport (it's still a bit of a drive, and taxi's are expensive!). I think we paid around $80-$90US for the night. It was definitely better than staying at the Holiday Inn Express across from the airport which we stayed at before we left to go back home, that was super expensive and we were so bored! Hotel La Rosa definitely has more charm :)

Hello again and thank you for your review! We are very glad that you enjoyed the hospitality of our San Jose airport hotel. Since your stay, we have made even more changes to the gardens, specially designed for (ahem!! ) "non-tropical" Canadians who rarely see real butterflies, hummingbirds and banana plants! At La Rosa, it is not far from the banana plant to the morning's banana bread! We have been planting flowers designed to attract butterflies and as a result, we now have hundreds of them - including our first Blue Morpho!!
Thank you for recognizing us as a valued alternative to the standard airport hotel. It is rewarding for both Owners and Staff alike to know we have made a positive difference in someone's vacation!
We completely agree with you regarding the barbed wire etc... We think it is unsightly and unnecessary as well - especially for a hotel. However, this physical protection is deeply set in the Costa Rican culture and is not really indicative of current crime levels - certainly not in La Garita where we are located. These features become more necessary in the major cities of San Jose and Alajuela and close by the airport as well. At Hotel La Rosa, these features do not exist - in part because we employ alternate measures and therefore have no need of them. Also, our gardens have been designed to provide both security and privacy. We believe guests do not want to stay in a hotel that looks like a fortress! (worse if it needs to be a fortress!!)
Again, we are very glad to have had the opportunity to host you at our hotel. We hope you will return to Costa Rica again soon and come visit us again!

We often have to stay in San Jose for business. San Jose is always crazy, busy, dirty and non stop choas. It is always such a treat to come to La Rosa. It is off the beaten path yet easy to get to; outside the hussle and bussle of the city, yet a short drive from everything, elegant and nice, yet comfortable and homey. It is great for our unique family of five....we have three girls under four. They are a handful, yet the rooms are ideal, the pool a treat, and the staff always attentive. The staff is super great at attending to families.

Room Tip: Comfortable. Clean. The big walk-in closet is always handy.

Hello! Thank you for your review of our hotel! We appreciate the time you have taken to write such a positive business review of our hotel. I can't agree with one thing though... your girls are not a handful! They seem very well behaved to me!!!! Of course they are still young.... !
We very much enjoy hosting your family, and we are glad for your repeated visits to our hotel every time you need to get things done in the Central Valley!
We introduced the Family Suites last year to fill a gap in the Hotel's services. We host so many families each year we found it important to be able to offer cabins that could host families of more than four people without needing two separate rooms at double the cost. We are very glad to receive your very positive feedback about our new Suites. It shows us we are getting it right for families!
We hope to see you again soon in the future the next time your business needs take you to San Jose and the Central Valley area.

The hotel was actually recommended to us by one of their competitors, and I'm so glad for the tip! This little hotel certainly exceeded our expectations (cleanliness, proximity to airport, lovely landscaping, QUIET, staff friendliness and helpfulness).

We chose this hotel for its proximity to the San Jose airport, 10 min ride, as it was enroute to our destination, Monteverde. From our home in CT, we communicated with the hotel manager, who arranged for airport pick up and car rental delivery to the hotel - both highly recommended and valued!

The rooms (we rented for both our arrival and departure of Costa Rica) were exceptionally clean and nicely appointed (more so the updated section of the hotel). The grounds and pool are lovely and best of all, it is very quiet - great for sleeping.

Other than quietude and cleanliness, I think what really impressed me was the genuine friendliness and helpfulness of the hotel manager, Robert, and his staff. It didn't matter who we interacted with, management or over night desk clerk, (arranging for rides, early morning breakfast to-go bags, even a hand-written map getting us to Monteverde!) everyone was so nice and really made our stay in Costa Rica easier and more enjoyable.

If you're travelling in this area of Costa Rica and will be staying in a hotel, I would absolutely recommend Hotel La Rosa de America!

We are very glad you enjoyed your stay with us so much! In a significant way, we use guest responses in this forum as a hotel "report card". Our staff follow guest responses very closely and take great pride when they see their departments mentioned in such a positive way!
Our focus at Hotel La Rosa is to ensure guests arriving and departing are able to get a good night's sleep in a beautiful, peaceful, safe and natural surrounding. From the comments in your review, we are glad that you feel we are achieving this desire.
Again, thank you for allowing us to host you during your Costa Rica vacation! We hope your vacation was all that you hoped and that you will return again soon!

entering Rosa's beautiful grounds after an hour stuck in traffic felt like entering an alternate universe. Staff and room were equally lovely and tranquil. Only downsides: couldn't get hot water in the shower (despite following instructions) nor wi-fi in the room. Still, I strongly recommend this place, especially as an alternative to downtown San Jose.

We would like to thank you for your recommendation of our hotel. We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us!
We have worked extremely hard to provide a different hotel experience for travellers arriving in Costa Rica. Specifically an experience focusing on beautiful, safe and peaceful gardens combined with unlimited service. Our staff very much appreciate hearing from guests when we get it right and most of our staff actually follow with pride, on their own time, online guest responses such as yours.
We regret the problem you had with the hot water shower system but we are grateful to you for letting us know. Since your stay we have removed all but one of the gas powered on demand units from the hotel due to problems and guest concerns. We will actually be running a blog on our Hotel Blog site shortly to more explain the problem and the implementation of our solution. (basically rip it out and replace) :-) We have only one unit remaining and it will be replaced at the end of August.
The Wi-Fi is another project under constant modification to improve it. We have significant problems with the signal penetrating the concrete walls of the more distant cabins even though we utilize N routers with access points. However we do hope you were at least able to get signal on your patio.

Again, thank you for your stay at La Rosa! From all the staff, here we very much appreciate your comments and respect your feedback.

This was our second visit back to Costa Rica, and we chose this hotel again for a quiet place close to the airport. Our experience at this place was even better! They have upgraded the rooms and made them fancier, and we loved that they now have coffee available before the dining room opens for breakfast. They had more things for breakfast this time, too. They've added eggs and cheese for us protein-lovers. The gardens were fantastic, and we saw lots of birds near our cabin. One thing we really like about this hotel is that the staff actually come up to you and ask if you need anything, or if you had a good sleep. In many places we stayed at the staff sort of disappeared after giving you the room key and taking your money. Here, they told us what was available at the hotel, where we could find what we needed, and gave us directions. There were lots of restaurants close by, and one night we ate really good Costa Rican food and the second night we decided to have Italian at a fancy place down the road. Before we arrived in Costa Rica, the hotel helped us find a good deal on a car rental, and the car company brought the car right to the hotel.
We wanted a tour so they gave us advice on what might suit us, and we had a really good day tour of Poas Volcano, which we weren't able to see last time we were in Costa Rica. A new butterfly garden has opened up down the street, which wasn't there last time, and we really enjoyed that too.
The rooms were very clean and we liked the little details of the cute towel-shapes! The rooms aren't huge, but the price is good and they have a great swimming pool and wi-fi. We were treated with genuine hospitality and care. We overslept on the morning of our flight, and we were in a big rush, and the girl at the desk helped us checkout really fast and got us a taxi in 5 minutes. We didn't have time for breakfast so she quickly packed us some banana bread and fruit and drink so we would have something to eat along the way.
We would definitely stay at this hotel again. We had a great time."

great place to get your bearings once you arrive. They were attentive to our needs and questions. Even gave us a sack breakfast when we had to leave early.

We stayed at La Rosa in November 2010 with my husband and our two daughters (age 9 months and 2 1/2 year). We stayed at this place three times during our 3 weeks vacation. Rooms are clean, breakfast is yumm (especially the banana bread), pool is great, and the most important, the staff is so friendly and helpful. We had a hard time travelling with the babies at the beginning and Robert took a lot of time to help us with that. He suggested activities that woul be appropriate with the babies, showed us the way to get there. He even had the kindness to upgrade our room to a suite for the babies to be more confortable. Also, I sent my mom (who speaks no spanish nor english) to La Rosa and they arranged everything for her to meet us at La Fortuna (taxi, bus, ...). From the begginning (reservation) to the stay, everthing was perfect. Thanks to Robert and the staff of La Rosa.
