“Perfect Start and End to a Costa Rican Vacation”

My wife and my in-laws, total 8 people, vacationed in Jaco, but we stayed at Hotel La Rosa de America our first and last nights in Costa Rica. This is a perfect place to start and end such a trip. The botanical gardens are wonderful, you can hear a little wildlife when you wake up in the morning (this can be good or bad), and the complimentary breakfast is delicious. The hotel booked us shuttles to and from the airport and provided some helpful tips on the adventures we were looking into.

Additionally, Hotel La Rosa de America helped us retrieve some overcharges on our rental car. We were overcharged $180.00 and figured we stood little chance on getting this back seeing we were arguing with a rental agency 2000 miles away. The hotel helped us out with our communications and we have received every penny back.

The service was great, the proximity to the airport is ok, but there are two major problems: the beds were really bad - so bad that neither my wife nor I got a good night rest. The other problem is no air conditioning. Now, no ac is typically not an issue, but all the rooms are ground level, so with no white noise in the background, you hear everything because you need to leave the windows open (or else you will cook.)

If you choose to eat at the bar nearby, Chery Bar, you will be greeted by a nice man who will cordially welcome you. That is the great part. Stick to the beer. I didn't imagine eating a microwaved Costco burrito my last night in Costa Rica, but I think I did.

This review for us is very disappointing as it relates directly to our service and sleep quality - both professional aspects of our business with which we pride ourselves on. As an airport hotel, our primary goal is to ensure a good night's sleep upon entry, or exit of Costa Rica. To fail to deliver this basic level of service to a guest is disturbing to us.
We routinely check the quality of our beds. In fact it is a requirement of our cleaning staff to periodically "lie down on the job" to test our beds. All our mattresses all are Orthopedic quality and many have pillow tops as well. Of course we recognize that some are older than others as they are replaced as they wear out.
Unfortunately, as this guest did not indicate any problems at time of check out, we are unable to pinpoint exactly the problem as we don't know the cabin. However, as a result of this review, we have rechecked all our mattresses and as a result will be replacing some of them. Though this is a normal process that occurs for us in May (end of our high season) due to high guest occupancy this year, and as a result of this review we will do it immediately to ensure this doesn't happen again.
Regarding air conditioning, there is not much we can change as to include air conditioning will result in significant price increases which we are trying to avoid. The hotel is already located in an ideal climate and benefits from the fresh air afforded by the ability to open the windows. In recognition of this guest's concern, we have experienced a week long "heat wave" which is not normal for this region. Temperatures at midday have reached 29 to 30 C (85F) dropping to about 18C (64F)at night. Normally we have cooler weather - actually necessitating guests to use covers at night to stay comfortable.
It is unfortunate that Chery's Bar did not meet expectations. It is one of about 20 local restaurants we maintain restaurant menus for as a free service to our guests. Normally guests enjoy this "watering hole" but it is very much a local establishment, and as such, primarily caters to locals at "local" budgets and customs. We always provide multiple options for dining to our guests if they ask. As it happens, Chery's is the closest and cheapest restaurant to our hotel.
Again, we wish to express our disappointment at the guest's poor sleep at La Rosa due to our bed. Please accept that this situation will be fixed immediately with the replacement of the affected mattresses.

Our family of 5 stayed here a total of 4 nights (3 upon our arrival in CR, and 1 just prior to leaving). It was about a 15 min cab ride from the airport, on the outskirts of San Jose in Alajuala. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well cared for and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The grounds are pretty, and the pool was well maintained and great for our kids (aged 12, 10, & 8). Our shower worked fine, and I wonder if the reviewers that had trouble with the shower mentioned it to the staff (as the instructions asked) so that they could get it working. Some of the reviewers I've read on this place need to remember they are in Costa Rica, not the US or Canada. This is a developing country, and the amenities are not the same as home. It is noisy everywhere in the morning in CR, either from traffic if you're in the city, or the sounds of the jungle. We were up with the sun just about every day were were there, and we were in CR for 18 days.

The breakfast at the hotel was excellent: fresh fruit, fresh banana loaf, scrambled eggs, juice, excellent coffee, toast. What more can you ask for? Robert, the owner, was very helpful with local area knowledge, and we found the nearby restaurants served very good food. Again, you can't compare them to the restaurants at home, so don't bother trying.

A couple of the pool chairs were broken, but still useable, and I'm sure they will be replaced soon, as the owner seemed to take any problems seriously.

We would definitely stay here again.

We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay and hope that your overall vacation in Costa Rica was up to your expectations and that your return to BC was relaxing!
I personally wanted to thank you for your indication of the attentive standard with which the Hotel operates and your recognition of our efforts despite occasional problems. We focus much of our employee training on understanding and accepting the different cultural needs and expectations of our guests. Last year, we received guests from 112 different countries and as an airport hotel, we try our best to introduce them to the Costa Rican, "Pura Vida" relaxed lifestyle, while ensuring all their holiday expectations are met in a timely fashion!

With regard to the pool deck chairs, they had been broken by a large group prior to your visit by having too many students sitting on one chair at a time. These chairs were sent off March 24th for repair to a local shop and should be back at the hotel next week - hopefully like new! In the meantime we still have plenty of chairs/recliners left at the pool. (Still, it definitely looks better when they are all in good repair though!)

Also, thank you for your positive comments about our ecological shower system. However, due to the difficulty some other guests have had with this new system, we have come to the conclusion that they are simply not suitable for the Hotel. Probably these are better used in a destination eco-lodge where guest expectation, location and desire meld into one. Thus, we have commenced installing a top quality replacement on-demand electric system imported from Germany. We have cabins 10, Suite 1 and Suite 2 now complete (as of March 24th) and the system is working perfectly... no need for any more explanations! Happily for us, we have still been able to maintain a low environmental footprint - even with these new showers. We intend to have the other two gas serviced cabins converted by early April.

We needed a hotel near the airport, and selected this one based on prior reviews. But it was a big disappointment. The "beautiful grounds" consisted of a patch of grass with mango trees. Yes, they are pretty, but the walkways were all full of half-smashed mangos that were dropping even as we walked to the office. Our room was tiny and very dark, furnished only with a double bed (no blanket), a tiny nightstand, and an old TV in the corner. Although there are a few restaurants within walking distance, the iron gates and window bars protecting every property were not reassuring, and the desk clerk admitted it was not a very safe area to walk (also no sidewalks, just a narrow shoulder on a very busy road). We don't mind no air conditioning, but this means leaving the window open, and putting up with LOTS of road noise. Also, the thin curtain was not effective in blocking the very bright lights from outside. Despite following the page-long directions for getting hot water in the shower, we never succeeded for more than 10 seconds; then it turns ice cold. Breakfast was poor quality. Also not as close to the airport as we hoped (a 25 minute cab ride). The staff was friendly, but overall this was not worth the price we paid, and we cannot recommend it.

Stayed at this hotel our first and last nights in Costa Rica - it was great. The setting was beautiful, service wonderful, everyone was very helpful. Nearby restaurants were great. Should definitely learn a little Spanish before coming to CR. I would definitely stay here again.

Stayed here with my family of five, the night before our flight back to Canada. It was okay.

Positives - beautiful grounds, nice woman at reception, has a pool, breakfast was nice

Negatives - room kind of smelled bad, decor/bedding was a bit outdated and "old lady-ish" (as my husband likes to say), pool chairs were old and broken, restaurant they recommended was bad, and worst of all was the shower (big long sign to tell you it is eco-friendly, and how to use it, but we still couldn't get it working and what am I going to do? Get all dressed again or go to the front desk naked?). The room, which is for five people, was small with no division really between us and I was up all night listening to the sounds of my 5 year old, who is apparently a noisy sleeper.

Note that the pool is very deep and so maybe not the best for small children, but they still had fun.

The directions on the website are helpful but need to be expanded for people who are coming from other places, e.g., the caribbean coast.

La Rosa is a real value added accomodations when you look at what you are paying for and what you get. We stayed for a week at La Rosa on a two week vacation in Costa Rica. Set in a wonderful garden the units are clean and restful. You get secure parking for your rental vehicle if you have one. Things we enjoyed were the sound of the birds early in the morning, which abound in the many trees and shrubs on the grounds. The breakfast that was included with lots of fresh fruits, banana bread and juice and coffee. You can also have eggs and breads and if you want to head out early they make up a breakfast bag and put it outside your unit on a chair awaiting your wake-up, plus they have hot coffee outside the breakfast area if you get there before they open at 7:30 am. Just walking the grounds and enjoying the flowers, a couple of different types of mangoes growing in prufusion in a couple of the trees. The good supply of towels and the pool just outside our door with the underwater light which made for nice evenings by the pool. And of course the always helpful Robert and Grisska. As a example, when my wife got a stiff neck after a flight on one of the small planes from Golfito, they quickly arranged for a professional massage right in the room. They also arranged our car rental and had us picked up at the airport. Other things - We enjoyed being able to go get a bottle of wine and sit by the pool in the evenings after busy days exploring. The big fluffy towels were a nice touch as they were changed every day. Fresh flowers in the room another nice touch. Situated in a residential area it was nice to take the short walk to Cherry's, a local bar and restaurant which has a lot of locals that frequent it, plus of course us visitors - plus there were a number of other restaurants in walking distance.

We did have some issues with getting hot water, but they did thier best to deal with that and one night out of seven was noisy when a large group of kids arrived. But when you look at the price and all the extras, it is very much worth those minor inconveniences. You have to remember you are travelling in Central America, you arent paying big hotel rates and you are enjoying more a of a slice of real Costa Rica here. If you have spent some time travelling Latin American countries you really come to appreciate what a place like La Rosa offers - you will be aware that things are different here, as they should be!
