We stayed here for three nights. The room was a good size, clean and quiet. Somewhat Holiday Inn-ish but perfectly fine. The staff was extemely helpful and very patient with our very limited Spanish speaking skills! The breakfast (included in the rate) was at a nearby restaurant (about a 2-minute walk) and was very good and had several choices.
The gardener (not sure if he was a family member) made a point of pointing out birds and a sloth family that we never would have noticed without his help. For those interested in birding, this is also a good spot -- a small stream runs directly behind the hotel and attracts a lot of birds in the early morning and late afternoon.
We didn't have a car but took a local bus to the volcano (about a 10-minute ride and much cheaper--approx $2-- than a hired shuttle-$40+). We took a cab (very accessible in La Fortuna) to the waterfall and then walked back (about a 30 -minute walk). Again, the owners of the hotel gave us good advice about taking a cab and walking back (uphill all the way to the waterfall)! They also went out of their way in arranging transportation to San Jose
