“Beautiful Xandari”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

We started and ended our recent visit to Costa Rica, at this beautiful resort. Food and service was excellent. The first night our room overlooked the valley below and it was one of the most beautiful sites I've ever seen. Fireworks could be seen in the distance, both nights, and the twinkling lights below were amazing. The room was awesome, beautiful decorated, it was the best start, and ending to a great trip. We did hike thru the gardens and to the waterfalls on the property, there was more to see, but we just ran out of time. Service in the dining room was excellent.

Room Tip: Favorite villa was #4, but #3 was very nice also, just a better view of the city from #4.

Xandari, what can I say, pure vida, from being greeted on arrival to being waved off when we left, it was pure magic. The funky colours and artwork, the huge rooms with big terraces, outstanding views over Alajuela. Gardens full of beautiful flowers and plants, perfect climate.
Food excellent, many thanks to Diana and Alex who treated us like friends rather than guests, it was a wonderful start to the holiday.

This was our last stop in Costa Rica before heading home – we stayed here one night.

Basic information:
• The first door you enter is into is a private garden area and then there’s the door to your room.
• Our room was a very large room with a king bed, a large sitting area with couch, chair and table as well as a table and two chairs to eat at.
• There is a mini refrigerator, sink, glasses and silverware.
• Breakfast, included in your room, is from 7-10 in the morning in a beautiful area overlooking Alajuella. There were many choices – fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, muffins, toast, hard boiled egg, cheese, ham, fruit juices, coffee and tea….all included. If you wanted something more, like omelets, pancakes, bacon, etc. then there was an extra charge. Our waiter was very friendly.

Pros
• This resort is beautifully landscaped and has many trails – one to a peaceful waterfall.
• The water, soft drinks, juices etc in the refrigerator are free (very nice!), as is the coffee.
• There was a large patio with chairs, table, and lounge chairs that overlooked Alajuella – very pleasant to sit out there in the evening.
• The shower had good water pressure.

Cons
• There is no tv and wifi is only in the reception area and restaurant, not in the rooms, but it was pretty fast.
• The shower ran low on hot water near the end.

Overall, a very pleasant place to stay. We would return.

Note: When we got here (on April 10), the main road to the resort was closed so we had to go around another way. You may want to check to see if it is still closed and get directions to come in the back way. We did get an email from the resort however we did not see it until after we arrived.

We LOVED our villa (two nights), so spacious and the artwork and decor are wonderful, plus it had GREAT lighting (and this is a big deal and not often found in CR). To relax on the patio and look out at the lights of the city, well, morning or night, that was great. The restaurant has wonderful views and all our meals (breakfast, one lunch, two dinners) were very very good. Grounds are beautiful, nice hikes to waterfalls. My only negative comment would be the barking dogs at night -- and I had to read many other reviews before I saw this mentioned....we were with a group so I know we were not the only ones hearing the dogs. I guess most people forgive this because it is such a lovely place. It is too bad the hotel owners/managers cannot do anything about the dogs....this was an earplugs and ambien place for us. But still we loved it, go figure!!

Only here overnight before leaving Costa Rica but managed to do the walking trails to the waterfalls in the extensive garden of this hotel built on the site of an old plantation and swam in one of the three pools. The view from the restaurant over the gardens with San Jose city in the distance is stunning and there is a lot of wildlife to see.
The hotel welcome is as friendly as ever as we have found in our 2 weeks here plus the inevitable fruit punch - which was very refreshing. The hotel reception is set in lovely luscious gardens and what strikes you is the fantastic colours that the buildings are painted - bright blue and pinks. There is also loads of brightly coloured art and 'Gaudiesque' mosaic bar and tables.
We had lunch and dinner there. A lovely salad at lunch and a disappointing evening meal for me - trying to have a traditional last Costa Rica meal and my beef with onions was very chewy and tough. At breakfast have the tower of health - a lovely combination of yoghurt, granola and fresh fruit.
Wildlife and gardens means you need to accept there will be loads of bugs especially in the early evening! It seemed flying beetles had a death wish and dive bombed our balcony glass doors between 6-7pm before we went to dinner when we had the lights on in the room.
Rooms are clean and comfortable - no air con but was fine as there is plenty of shade around the villas.

Room Tip: There are lots of paths through the gardens between rooms so ask for one near reception if you don...

Short ride to/from airport. We stayed at Xandari on our way back to USA after a week in Costa Rica. We were met at the airport by the Xandari shuttle and a man holding a sign with our name on it. Gorgeous hotel and grounds. We had about 3 hours of sunlight after arriving. That was plenty of time to walk though the grounds of this old coffee plantation (no pun intended). Wonderful botanical gardens. Walked to a waterfall. Enjoyed one of the 3 beautiful swimming pools on the grounds. Our room had wonderful arched, high ceilings. Nice view of the city below. The cool air at this elevation was a welcome break after a week at the ocean. Ate at the restaurant. Good dinner and reasonably priced on the patio with the same wonderful view of the city lights below. The drive through Alajuela was quick but an interesting glimpse at one of CR's biggest cities. Would absolutely stay here again. Probably wouldn't stay more than one night. And.... The staff was excellent.

Room Tip: Make sure you've got a view. If you are staying one night, our room #12 was perfect. Probably wo...

Just returned from a trip to Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

Stayed at Xandari for 3 nights and I have not 1 negative comment. The staff are top notch. Always smiling, always asking if there is something they can do to help.

we only ate 1 breakfast and 1 lunch so I cant comment on the dinner menu.

The included breakfast is great and is more than sufficient for most. Very tasty and very fresh.

if you have a chance to stay there definetly do so. Its just 20 minutes or so from the airport. The airport is actually in Alajuela not San Jose.
5 stars isnt enough.
Thanks for the wonderful service. We will be back
