“Beautiful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

We booked this reservation last minute because we didn't know our plans in advance. What a nice place! The manager upgraded us from the standard room to the deluxe, remodeled room because there was a lot of vacancy. It was absolutely beautifully decorated and it gave us ideas for our bathroom remodeling project. The grounds of the hotel are stunning, with a beautiful view of the city below. We walked the coffee trail and swam in the pool. Breakfast was delicious and the staff was very friendly and courteous. We would definitely stay here again.

i cannot say enough good things about our experience here. We stayed two nights, when we first arrived and then in the middle of our 16 days in CR. Hotel Buena Vista became our home base for transport, money exchange, good easy meals, doing laundry, and figuring out issues with our rental car. These friendly folks excel in getting it done, whatever you need. The rooms are lovely. the staff so kindly indulged my efforts to speak Spanish. if you would like to be taken care of in the Alejuela area, this is your place. The free airport pickup and transfers are just the beginning.....

Room Tip: ask for one of the newly renovated ones

I stayed at the hotel Buena Vista in October 2012 with my wife. The property is beautiful with a lot of options for guests stay. We had a private villa separate from the main hotel. First class all the way. Comfortable beds, nice bathroom, and a wonderful balcony overlooking the local coffee fields. The hotel offered several outings whether it was the volcano for the day or to the beach. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are gonna be around the san jose area.

We stayed here for our first and last nights - it is around 15 minutes from the airport (note that the road is twisty and was not much fun at night - no catseyes).
Very clean, extremely well furnished, great views (not a vista for us, but nice gardens with bananas and birds and plants). Good breakfast (cold breakfast - fruit and bread based - was included in the room. Hot breakfast for a price).
Good service.

There is no air conditioning but this was not a problem for us in May. The hillside location helps get a breeze.

Many thanks for your nice review. For future guests I would like to clarify two things. "No air conditioning, but not needed" is a common observation about our hotel. Costa Rica is a mountainous country. At sea level it is hot and humid. In the high mountains it is cold. We are on top of a mid size mountain, 4400 feet elevation (1800 meters). This is the boundary where air conditioning is not needed. We are maybe 15 degrees (F) cooler than the low country. At night you will probably use the light blanket on your bed (I do). Being on a mountain top does provide fresh air and nice breezes also a panoramic view as this guest observed. The second topic is our breakfast. Our website states a "tropical" breakfast is included in your room rate. This breakfast consists of a plate of perhaps 5 fruits such as fresh mango, papaya, pineapple, banana, watermelon, kiwi, strawberries, cantaloupe, star fruit etc. Which fruits specifically, depend on what high quality fruits are available at the farmers market. This fresh fruit is sliced and chilled right before it is served. In addition to fruit, our free breakfast includes home baked (each morning) banana bread, cinnamon rolls, as well as wheat toast, gouda cheese, unlimited, orange juice, coffee, and several types of tea. We do have a separate breakfast menu consisting of many items such as eggs, bacon, macadamia nut pancakes, French toast, cold cereal, yogurt, granola, etc. These menu selections are not included in your room rate. Hopefully this info helps our future guests know what to expect. Again thanks for visiting us. Thanks for the great review, and please visit us again. Owner, Hotel Buena Vista.

This was the last stop for my husband and I's trip to Costa Rica. Our travel agent booked this hotel for us and I wasn't sure what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised when the owner picked us up from the Interbus stop and drove us to the hotel. He upgraded our room to the fancy suite which had a beautiful view of San Jose from our balcony. We only stayed one night but enjoyed every minute. There is a coffee plantation on the grounds which is free to explore. I had never seen coffee growing before. They have a nice restaurant, bar and pool area. All of the staff were very nice and accomodating. We didn't need to go to the airport til the evening and they willingly held our luggage for us. We had booked a trip to Poas and an employee of the hotel drove us there at 7:30 am so we could be there when it opens. The morning is the best time to see the volcano where it isn't covered in clouds. The park also gets a bit crowded being that it is so close to San Jose for travelers coming or leaving. It ended up being a great ending to our trip. We got to the park and the driver actually went with us to the volcano and gave us more information about the park. He was a young guy and not overbearing at all. He gladly took some photos of my husband and I. We really had a great time and even got to see the whole crater and lagoon as the clouds moved out. I was glad we came early because when we went for a second viewing on the way out, it seemed to be cloudier and began to rain. The guide took us to a great traditional costa rican restaurant on our way back since we still had time to kill before getting to the airport. It was fantastic!!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

Started our vacation here, airport pickup was great and rooms were delightfully clean and newly remodeled. Breakfast the next morning was wonderful and we scheduled a drop off at the bus station in San Jose that saved us. The location had recently changed and we never would have found it without our drivers help. Returned for our last nights stay and the female receptionist was not helpful whatsoever. She wasn't familiar with the town of Alajuela at all, couldn't point out a single supermarket on the provided map or tell us where to catch the bus. A male staff member saved us and provided us with a little more guidance. We returned for dinner, knowing it was expensive but expected a decent meal. By far the worst meal I have eaten in the past year. Airplane food is better, seriously and doesn't cost $17/plate. I was hoping to enjoy out last meal here in Costa Rica and frozen mushy fried flavorless fish with 2 small shrimp on top didn't come close. I am at a loss of words for this. As the hotel is located outside of town dinner options are none existent unless you're planning to travel back into town. I hate confrontation and probably won't say anything as I feel the staff would simply make excuses as how the menu is soon to change and that this is not usual. I should have known better and read further into the reviews. All in all a great place to stay but save your money and you appetite for somewhere else!!

My husband and I recently stayed here for one night and it was very clean, comfortable, good hotel. As a previous person mention, there is no AC but there are fans and I honestly did not get hot and was fine with just the fans. It is always cooler in the evenings there and humid so the fans cool you down quickly. I am from AZ so I know hot! Anyways, we also ate dinner at their restaurant and it was delicious. All around, a good hotel to stay at for the price and area it is in.
