“Beautiful hotel with great personal service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

We stayed at the Buena Vista hotel for two nights, after a two-week trip in Costa Rica. The owner upgraded are room to one of the newly renovated and decorated rooms. The new room was beautiful! In the upcoming months, all rooms will be upgraded. The owner showed much interest in his guests and made the whole stay extremely pleasant, thanks to the high level of personal service and assistance. Highly advisable!

We started/ended our trip in Costa Rica at this beautiful hotel. As soon as we checked in, we felt right at home. We stayed in a villa the first night. The place was amazing! From the owner, these were new additions to the property. We had a wonderful view of San Jose From the balcony and the very spacious room was a treat! On our return we stayed in a 2nd floor room (24) with a great balcony to have a cocktail on! The staff were able to make accommodations for us to continue on to the caribbean! ON our return to the hotel, they arranged a trip to Poas volcano, La Paz waterfall gardens, and Doka coffee plantation. Make sure to stop by the hotel bar and grab a BMW from Harlem!

The best thing about our stay was the hotel staff and owner!!! Thank you so much Lee, Harlem, Darwin, and Kenneth! You guys were a real treat and took care of our every need!

A very special thanks to Harlem. Thank you for the great cocktails and many laughs! We look forward to seeing you again...Pura Vida!

This is a great start/end point for a stay in Costa Rica - It's close to the airport (and runs a free shuttle) The newly renovated room we had was beautifully and tastefully done with huge comfortable beds and a balcony. The shower had a pebble floor and the door was a carved piece of art in itself. The staff were helpful and friendly (patiently helping me practice my Spanish!) They had a good choice of vegetarian food - traditional Costa Rican and more American style. The pool and gardens were a very pleasant place to spend a lazy afternoon. They even put out coffee, cake, fruit and juice before 5.30am for those getting an early flight!

Room Tip: The redecorated rooms are beautiful and the huge beds comfortable. The Villas looked lovely with eve...

We stopped for two nights at this hotel during our honeymoon, both times we were catching flights the next morning.

The hotel is very pretty, set in the mountains, with a terrific view. We stayed in the "SunDeck Suite" and the Villa.

The rooms were clean, and the hotel was very nice. But the room was not as promised, and had absolutely no view of the Sunset ... in fact, the sunset on the otherside of the hotel. This was the only reason we picked this room...quite disappointing.

We were very, very disappointed with the hospitality of the front desk - they were not helpful, and it seemed like we were disturbing them every time we had a questions or needed something. One at least 3 occasions, they were huddled in the back room and came out looking quite annoyed that we needed their help.

We did laundry there - 3 items - 2 pairs of pants and shirt - the cost was $13 US.... you can make your own call on that. I will say that it was my mistake, as I had thought I read the prices for a load of laundry...I didn't think it would cost the total price of one of the pairs of shorts to wash three pieces of clothing

Breakfast - couples slices of toast, fruit on a plate and some coffee. I expected a little more considering the cost. at least a continental buffet...not a tiny plate

The Villa is gorgeous, the coffee and banana plants pretty cool, the pool looked very nice as well.

Room Tip: The Villa is worth the money, very spacious, clean and gorgeous views.

I am happy that these guests enjoyed some aspects of their experience with us and unhappy they were not 100% satisfied. The comments about poor service are of particular concern because we normally receive complimentary comments regarding our helpful, friendly staff. We had a staff meeting about these guests experience in hopes of always improving our customer service. Our breakfast was described as "not worth the price", a couple slices of toast, fruit and coffee. First, there is no charge for breakfast, it is complimentary. This breakfast is included in the room price as well as airport transportation to and from the airport. A more complete description of our breakfast is fresh watermelon, pineapple, bananas and papaya, unlimited toast, muffins, strawberry jam, cheese, orange juice and coffee. These guests questioned the lack of a sunset view. They stayed in a villa facing east and the sunset room facing west. During the rainy season it is so overcast as to not be able to tell where the sun is especially in the afternoons and evenings. Finally, it was alluded to that our laundry service is over priced. $13 is correct for 2 pants and a shirt (if the shirt was also ironed). The cost of laundry service varies a great deal depending on which country and the quality of the particular hotel. Our laundry service takes great care to provide a quality product and I feel the rates are quite reasonable. A laundry price list is in every room. We wash and fold a mans dress shirt or a womans skirt for $3 and we hand iron it for $2 more. Small items such as socks, caps, handkerchiefs are $2. This review is our first 3 star rating in 9 months and we won the "Trip Adviser 2012" award. This is not to say we can't improve. We strive to improve and make all aspects of this hotel better and hope these guests will try us again.

A great hotel. We had a villa, and it was simply great - very convenient, and nicely decorated. There seemed to be thought behind every feature, such as convenient light control, comfortable beds, nice bathroom, good shampoo/conditioner, etc.
There's also great view of Alajulela as the hotel is located on the top of a hill.
We stayed for one night only, but wished that we could have stayed for more.
Very close to San Jose and to the airport.

This is an amazing property with banana trees and coffee plants. Splurge and get the villa. It's so worth it. It is beautiful with bamboo ceilings, patio overlooking city with a rocking swinger chair, ceiling fans, and gorgeous Tommy Bahama like bedding. The bathroom is a gorgeous rock like structure with a large shower. The sofa was also very comfortable. The pool is pretty chilly, being solar heated. But everything else is amazing. I could live here!

The people are so friendly and planned our coffee plantation tour. We loved it!! I would definitely return to this gem in the hills.

Room Tip: Get the villa!

What a great place to relax and get some rest before heading back to the States! After a week on the Osa, our family of four was tired and ready to go home, but rushing to the airport the day before would have been torturous. Buena Vista was the perfect place to rest, and get some energy for the long trip home. If we return, we'll request one of the new bungalows nestled down the hill. And, the staff was perfect to us! We really need to give a special thanks to Darwin, who served us at dinner our last night, and then drove us to the airport the next morning. He was very patient with our awful Spanish, he loved practicing his English, and we could easily tell how much he loved his home country and San Jose. Darwin, we hope you can get your trip to the States someday soon!

Room Tip: Request one of the new bungalows.
