We stayed here for our first 4 nights in Costa Rica. No, Melrost is not at all fancy. The rooms are very simple, and you may even have to ask for a bathmat or an extra towel. But the family owners are as nice and kind as can be. There is a casual, friendly atmosphere at Melrost. The other guests we met staying there were interesting, friendly, and, like us, looking for a genuine experience in Costa Rica.
Other pluses: A hot breakfast is brought to your room every morning, and transportation to nearby restaurants is provided if you want it. We walked to the Mall one night and ate at Ta Bueno which is in the midst of a large American-style food court where you would never think you could fine a good meal but we did at Ta Bueno. During the days, we took a few tours and one day, for a small fare, Barnaby drove us to Zoo Ave and picked us up when we were through.
Being close to the airport, Melrost is a good place to stay when you first arrive, and if you need a place to stay the night before you leave---which is what we did and after 2 weeks in Costa Rica.
