“nice hostel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

free breakfast and kitchen access, nice staff, comfortable dorm. only minus for me was the location as it wasn't particularly convenient to the bus station, and that there wasn't a sense of community here. also a bit pricey (12/night) compared to other hostels i stayed at while in cr.

Clean place with nice staff (one spoke better english than the other). I had a private room with private bath. No windows in room but my door opened into the courtyard like area with fresh air. The wifi worked well. Felt safe especially with locked gate at night. Very easy to walk to restaurants and center of town. Took a cab from airport for $6. Liked staying in Alajuela to stay out of San Jose. Comfortable bed.

This is a basic hostel that provides transportation to the airport starting at 4:45 in the morning. It took us 5 minutes to get to the airport. The hostel is basic but cheap, rooms are not fancy but overall clean. The staff is friendly and ready to help you with any information. We booked a room with a private bathroom for $35 dollars and it had a full bed with 2 sets of bunkbeds. Quite unecessary for us but for a family that is traveling or a group of friends it would give you an extremely cheap room for the night. It is a short walk to some grecery stores and right around the corner from the police station so we felt very safe.

I stayed in this hotel one night and needed to go to the airport early morning. I liked there very much. Clean hotel and staff is very friendly and helpful. I am very thankful for free transfer to the airport. Gracias!

If your plane is arriving late or leaving early from San José this place is for you!
Operated by a friendly local family the hostel has clean rooms and decent amenities to rest after/prepare before your trip. Common areas clearly lack charm but you won't be spending time there anyway.
The free shuttle TO the airport (no shuttle FROM the airport but there are buses and taxis are relatively cheap) is a must for departing travelers while free breakfast and the location a couple of blocks away from the bus station will please arriving ones.

We ended up staying a total of 8 nights here because my husband got ill. It all started off very positive when we arrived at 10pm and were given a free upgrade from the double with shared bathroom that we had booked to a double with an ensuite!

The hostel is owned by a Costa Rican family, Alex and Matilde. Alex is basically on site 24/7 and can help with anything. He is super friendly, speaks good English, is always smiling and can answer any questions you might have.

Breakfast is good and plentiful. They try and keep it varied so you're not eating the same stuff every morning, so there's cinnamon pancakes, ham and cheese sandwiches, toast, cereal, gallo pinto, eggs.... and always coffee, tea, fresh fruit and juice.

There is hot water all day long (electric showers - so whatever you do, don't think about touching the shower head while in there LOL)

The kitchen is well equipped, and there's two computers and free wifi that has a strong signal even in the ensuite rooms at the back.

There's also a free airport shuttle for those staying in private rooms. It's only a 5 or 10min drive (depending on your taxi driver LOL)

The only thing I could fault is the set up. The three rooms at the front of the building open onto the dining/common area. You aren't allowed to hang out there from 10pm onwards, though, so even when we stayed in one of these rooms we always got a good night's sleep. So I guess if people play by the rules and aren't hanging out there until late at night then that's no problem. The rooms upstairs and the two ensuites at the back of the building are further away from the common area. It's certainly NOT a party hostel, it is social and we did meet fun people, but you are still able to get a good night's sleep!

The hostel is basic, but it is always clean and it is very good value for money. We enjoyed our stay and would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: I preferred the rooms at the back (the doubles with ensuite) because there's less traffic noise...

Good location. Room was very clean. Breakfast was big and very good. Staff was very friendly and helpful, arranging for a taxi to the airport. Overall a great value and we would definitely stay there again.
