“Wonderful Place to Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2011

My husband and I stayed at Alegria the night before and the day after our trip to the Osa Peninsula. Alegria is located only about 5 minutes from the international airport and George (the owner) will come to pick you up and take you back to the airport. After a long day of flying, it was so great to see his smiling face and sign with my name on it among the hordes of taxi drivers vying for our attention. We were whisked away to the peace and quiet of Alegria. Our room and bathroom were spotless with excellent water pressure and hot water. Staying at Alegria with George is like staying at a friend's house. He made arrangements for a Tico friend of his named Luis to take us to the Tobias airport in Pavas to catch our Nature Air flight to Drake Bay the next day. When we came back to San Jose from our stay in Drake Bay, Luis was there to pick us up. He gave us a great city tour of San Jose and graciously showed us his house.

When we come back again, we will definitely stay with George at Alegria and make sure that we stay a few extra days so Luis can show us the sights of Central Costa Rica. George's homemade muffins are fantastic!

Alajuela is a quiet suburb and Alegria is about a 15 minute walk to the downtown area.

Details: George takes cash (not credit cards). There is also free wifi. There is a TV in the room.

We highly recommend Alegria and whole heartedly agree with all of the great prior TripAdvisor reviews!

We had a rough time getting to Costa Rica (snow, lost passport, missed flight, delayed baggage), which made us even more grateful to spend our first night at Alegria.

George waited for us while we filled out the lost baggage forms. Super easy to find him at the airport! We stayed in a large room (Ballenas?) that was not listed on his website ($70, comfy King bed, excellent bathroom and hot shower). Plentiful and delicious breakfast--- the best French toast we've had in ages (way better than mine).

George was kind enough to let me charge my iPod touch on his laptop while we waited for his buddy to drive us to Pavas airport the next morning. Of course, I ended up forgetting it when we left, but he called his friend's cell and we turned back. I'm so grateful!

We only spent 1 night there and in retrospect I should have planned on 2 nights (to visit the volcano). But (thanks to George and his hospitality) our first few hours in Costa Rica were way better than expected, especially after our wave
of bad luck!

We stayed with George our last night in CR. He was nice enough to send a friend to come find us when we got lost trying to find the place. We were close, but we probably wouldn't have found it without help.

The house was lovely...large and clean. The room was ample with clean sheets and comfortable beds. He provided clean towels and bath robes. The bathroom was clean and styled like a north American one. He lives on a quiet street, which was nice to walk around during the day. He also recommended a great seafood restaurant where we enjoyed a large meal for two (surf and turf) for about $12.

He gladly called us a cab in the morning to the airport which arrived within 5 minutes. Everything was great! We will be back next time we go to Costa Rica. Thanks, George!

George, the B&B owner and caretaker, is fantastic! Just a super-warm guy - as he says, southern hospitality in Costa Rica. He gave us driving directions when we got lost on the way, after providing us with detailed directions and his cell phone number. We had an early flight the next morning - not only did he pack us each a breakfast-to-go, he drove us to the airport! Then, because we arrived later than planned and hadn't yet returned our rental car, he took responsibility for it after we left and turned it over to the car rental company for us! All this at a bargain price! Fantastic!

Our stay at Alegria was a great start to our Costa Rica trip. My husband and I arrived too late to start a cross country drive so we opted to stay at his B&B, saved $ and rented our car for the next day. When we arrived at SJO George had a sign and waved us through the hordes of cab drivers while greeting us like old friends! We were on West coast time and George was very friendly to share a cervesa with us before hitting the sack. We chatted a bit and then retired to cute comfortable rooms with a ceiling fan. The home was very clean and comfortable as was the bathrooms and shower. I liked the large open and well decorated living room for relaxing in. At breakfast we had fresh baked muffins, tropical fruit platter plus all the coffee I could drink. George even offered to make eggs as well but I was stuffed.
George is really warm and personable while giving you personal space to enjoy his home. The other guests were chill and friendly people with a sense of adventure so you feel like you are staying with like-minded, relaxed folks all around. The stay with George and his hospitality really set the tone for a great vacation for us. I can't thank him enough for that, I will return if I fly into San Jose, CR again.

My wife and I went to CR for 17 days on our honeymoon and stayed at Alegria B&B the night we arrived and the night before we left. George is a fantastic host! Our flight into CR was delayed and he was up waiting for us on his porch at 1am to make sure we were welcomed upon our arrival.

We had never been to CR before, but we understood "Pura Vida" very quickly. George is very friendly and welcoming but also gives you space to do your own thing, so you really feel at home at Alegria. Plus, his breakfasts are both hearty and delicious. His special banana bread recipe is truly a treat.

The rooms are very clean and spacious and the overall tone of the B&B is quiet and relaxing--just what you would expect. For the price, you can't go wrong with Alegria. It really was the perfect bookend for our trip.

Thanks again, George!

P.S. It can be tricky getting to Alegria at night, but if you follow George's directions exactly, you will be ok.

My fiance and I were very happy staying at Alegria at both ends of our trip. George is very welcoming - almost immediately it feels like you've known him for years. He gave us great tips on what to see and where to eat around Alajuela. He cooks great breakfasts and bakes banana bread and mango muffins! Alegria is lovely and homey - we were very comfortable there.
