“Charming decor and great Shanghainese food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2011

We've been to Fu 1088 many times and we love the food there. The restaurant is housed in a mansion decorated with antiques from all over china (at least that's what we were told). It's pretty charming if you have time to walk around and look at the collectibles after dinner. Guests dine in private rooms which is nice, but I don't like the small room in the attic, which is quite small and dark. It does have a minimun order charge, around RMB300 per person, excluding alcholic drinks.

As for the food, Shanghainese food tend to be on the sweeter side. The dishes that we like are:
Pork belly in hongshao (sweet) sauce (a must!)
Deep fried fish in sweet soy sauce
Steak on a bone with hongshao style coating
Egg with caviar
Tofu with hairy crab meat

We ordered:
Crispy spicy chicken
Pork rib in sweet sauce
Prawn
Pork "dumpling" in broth
Pork and shrimp dumpling

Pork dumpling in broth was gross and basically an uncooked ball of ground fatty pork in a broth. Prawn was good and hearty. Chicken and ribs were ok but not great, wouldn't order again. Private room was nice and relaxing, but not in great condition and service was very below average.

“Underwhelming food in interesting building with original decor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2011

While the decor was interesting -- small private room -- the food wasn't impressive. It was too sweet and too fatty for our taste. We had a fish in Mandarin sauce, which was recommended by the waiter. It was a generous half-fish portion, fried and served over a relatively thick Mandarin orange sauce; think crepes suzette. We also had a salty egg with caviar, which was good. We also had a chicken dish; again, not memorable. I think that the best dish was the peas and ham. The peas were very fresh and appeared hand-shelled as they were of varying sizes. They were quite sweet and less sauced.

On the whole, we were disappointed, and agree with other reviewers that while the decor is charming in some respects, that it could also use a bit of refreshing. This might be a better restaurant to visit with a larger group, where perhaps the room would be larger and the surroundings a bit less tired. We have eaten in other restaurants that are known for the authentic decor and enjoyed it more.

While we were not pressured to meet some minimum bill, it's worth noting that the wine list is very limited, and there are no wines by the glass. We had cocktails. I ordered a martini, which came with too much vermouth. Be specific about what you want on that front. The gin and tonic seemed weak.

“Amazing food... creepy creepy decor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2010

Went here for a meal with my friend. Didn't realise they only did private rooms... which means the two of us were put into a tiny attic room at the very top of the villa. The room actually had really bad vibes... despite the rather opulent wallpaper, the dark victorian style wood furniture and net curtains combined to create a rather Norman Bates kind of atmosphere... they tried to close the door of the room on us and I had to insist it stay open lest I freak out!

Atmosphere aside... if we had been a larger party we would have been in a bigger room downstairs, which would have been much much better.

The food however, was amazing. Lotus root with sticky rice and spun sugar came to the table like a sculpture, the wasabi mayonnaise shrimp was completely moreish, and friend smoked fish delicious. We had a braised fish that wasn't very tasty (texture was very fatty and bland). Fruit at the end was very nice. Service was so so. Our waiter wasn't terribly friendly. There is a 300 RMB minimum per person, which the restaurant requires that we meet. We were told that this was excluding drinks. We asked whether we could simply pay the difference if we didn't order 300 RMB worth of food each (so we wouldn't have to just waste the food). We were told no. Alcohol we were told didn't count towards the total, but then at the end it did. Rather idiotic policy - so wasteful! The restaurant should really offer some kind of tasting menu - so that they hit their per person min spend, but that for smaller parties, there isn't a colossal waste of food.

They only do one white wine (Chardonnay) but several reds. I was told this is because the clientele is largely Chinese and they prefer ordering red.
