“Hit and miss. Choose carefully.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013 via mobile

Apart from the cigarette smoke filled room, the meal started out really well. We had delicious starter the red dates stuffed with glutinous rice were quite unique and went well with the cucumber salad. We ordered a kind of DIY pork bun dish which was, granted, delicious, but because it was heavy on onion, it was probably not all that nutritious. Plus, we ordered the duck pancakes which were kind of a similar dish. So, in many ways it was our fault that it wasn't a great meal, because of what we ordered, but I will say that the duck was pretty gross. Very fatty and just a sort of dirty dish the way it comes sitting ontop of prawn crackers. Having said that, we'll go back and mix up the dishes next time because I'm sure there are some gems in there.

“The best "Grape" in a large vineyard”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

I was introduced to this wonderful restaurant through a friend who has lived in Shanghai for close to 30 years. She told us this was her favorite restaurant and has never been disappointed in the countless times she has eaten there. While the location has relocated from a small seedling venue, the restaurant has moved and grown as it received more attention and customers. Equally favored by ex-pats and locals, the menu offers a wonderful blend of a variety of distinctive regions, each with their own special flavors and ingredients.
Be sure to try the unique "Fried Tea Tree Mushroom" looking much like onion rings, but with a special flavor and texture. Another very unique dish we tried was the "Dates filled with sweat rice" (The names listed are not necessarily exactly as mentioned on the menu.) Luckily, the menu is well titled and complete with good photographs of each dish. The restaurant is unpretentious and easy to feel at home in. Other Chinese restaurants can be overwhelmingly "local" and perhaps difficult for Westerners to find appealing. To make things even better, the price is very reasonable. We had 6 different dishes and 5 bowls of rice for 5 persons and the bill came to just under 200 CNY (~$33.00 US)
As taxis are very inexpensive in Shanghai, usually only a few Dollars, and the location is very central, getting there is not a problem. All in all - a highly recommendable establishment.

“very fair priced and very tasty food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

I am visiting grape for many years now. it is a must every time when in Shanghai. I think its the perfect place to bring visitors as the food is local but still cooked that most westerners will like it. I suggest to try the prawns or the lemon chicken.
The location itself is very nice in a old russian church. However the restaurant keeps growing. On my last visit there was space upstairs to.
Not all waiters speak english, but you can ask for an english menu which also has pictures of the dishes. The price of each dish is also in the menu, so you wont have a surprise when the bill arrives.
All in all i would say this restaurant has the best price / value factor in the city.

“One of our go-to restaurants for Shanghainese food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

We have been coming here for the past ten years, and the food has always been fresh and authentic Shanghainese, without emptying your wallet. Located next to the Greek Orthodox church along Xinle Lu, the restaurant's hongsha rou is excellent, and comes with an egg and slivers of cucumber. One of our favourites is their crispy duck skin with pancakes, which comes with all the fixings - spring onions, hoisin sauce, and includes deepfried crackers etc. Kids especially enjoy this dish as it is a very hands-on experience. Do also order their various fresh vegetables fried with garlic as these are also good. A negative for us is if a nearby table orders smelly tofu. They do not really have a non-smoking area, but can find you a table among the 3-4 floors that is relatively distant from the nearest smoker. The meal usually ends with fruits that are delivered to your table. They do have a few tables in the conservatory next to the main door, so do ask for that. This is particularly popular with the expat crowds, especially Americans and Germans, so do make a reservation.

“Unbelievable value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

Have visited this place since late 90s and was so pleased to discover that it has remained as good as ever. Ordered a set of my usual favorites (lemon chicken, gongbao jiding-kung po chicken-, suanrou xilanhua-broccoli with garlic, tianbao niurou-beef on sizzling plate, mala tofu, yuxiang jiezi-sichuanese eggplant in a clay pot, drunken shrimps, yangzhou fried rice etc.) and everyone in our group of 9 was just thrilled. With the beer and redwine we had, the bill was very reasonable 500 RMB.
Not the fanciest place in terms of decor but the staff gets the orders right so it's no wonder this place has been in business for more than 15 years and is frequented by many foreigners and expats.
