“A Great Choice for Hunan in Shanghai”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

Probably one of the favourite Chinese restaurants for foreigners and tourists in Shanghai. This is traditional Hunan spicy served in a non-fancy kitche done up atmosphere (think eating in a log cabin). Best spicy hunan ribs in town and great for entertaining visitors.

Location: Great. In the former French Concession near Okura & Jinjiang Hotels. Housed in a random location upstairs.

Food: Very good. Spicy but they can temper it down for you. Try the ribs which are among the best in Shanghai. Everything else you can't go wrong. For first time visitors you should order the candied banana or apples which are fun to get through for the end of the meal.

Atmosphere: If you are looking for fancy, then not the place. But the appeal here is a down to earth restaurant. It has a bit of a kitchen feel with fake grape vines on the walls, but that is what makes it interesting.

Service: Average. Nothing special.

Value: Very good especially in large groups. I think we paid less than 600rmb for 6 people with drinks.

Occasions: Business meals. First time visitors to Shanghai. Residents craving hunan spicy.

In summary one of the most popular Chinese restaurants in town with a long tradition and still not to be uprooted by the fancier / expensive joints popping up. A must visit if you haven't already.

“Excellent spicy hunan food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

once of the best hunan food you can find in shanghai, with lots of local colours in the decor. Prices are easy on the pocket too. this is one of my top choice for entertaining visitors to shanghai.

“For Shanghai Hunan, it's OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Hunan cuisine has a reputation far and wide as one of the spiciest in China. Di Shui Dong has a reputation as one of the best Hunan restaurants in Shanghai, but it clearly has moderated its spice level in recognition of the local palate's limited tolerance of heat. None of the dishes we ordered was as spicy as I'd have liked it, though to be fair, I think that the others in my party were probably grateful for a bit of a reprieve from spice. The famed Hunan ribs were a singular disappointment, being neither particularly flavourful nor especially meaty. Service can be exceedingly slow and lackadaisical, but TIC ("This is China"), and expectations of excellent service would have been misplaced.

“Tasty food exelent service and good value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

Huge card. The service is kind observant and fast. The food is great and it is possible to find something for I guess every taste. Maybe not stylish, but a very nice atmosphere. Not a place to celebrate the 10 year wedding day but a place to bring friends for a nice dinner
