“Downstairs Restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2012

I always love going to URBN's restaurant, Downstairs for Breakfast. They have the best Granola in town. The service is always outstanding and the outside Patio is one of the best places to relax on a nice day.

The location and restaurant design are good - in fact great. The rooms are truly spacious for the price - not sure about cleanliness of the dark slate tiled sink and bath - they looked a bit grubby in the corners and there was an awful smell coming from the drains. Unfortunately I found the service in the hotel and restaurant to be very poor and the food was truly awful. The staff look bored and unhappy and seem to go out of their way to avoid doing their jobs. Several people commented on this while i was there. The happy hour in the evening was great for the wine but avoid the 'canapes' and give the food a miss. The hotel bar is a hang out for local expats so if you crave some countrymen you will no doubt find them there in the evenings. In fact - that may explain why the staff look bored and unhappy...

Room Tip: avoid the upper floor - it has a bar above it.

This was my 2nd stay in Shanghai and this time round I wanted something a little less 'business like' (I stayed 83 floors up in The Park Hyatt last time) but still with first class standards. Urbn Hotel was an excellent choice. My room was cool and well laid out, the staff were friendly and helpful and there was a nice bar area and restaurant. The food (European) was very good. Also, there was a nice mixed clientèle staying there. It had a really good vibe about the place. I really can't fault this hotel and the location was pretty central without being noisy at all. 5 Stars and I will be back again there next year and recommend this place to colleagues and friends who travel to Shanghai.

We stayed for four nights on the recommendation of several friends, New York Times etc and really loved it. The concept -- China's first carbon neutral hotel -- is appealing, but other aspects are even better. It's a boutique hotel in all the right ways -- great location, gorgeous decor (reclaimed wood, natural fabrics, things like recycled leather suitcases used as a wall and the restaurant hostess stand), luxurious rooms (with lovely bathrooms with large rain shower, sunken tub next to bed -- very cool -- large sofa/living area, comfortable bedding, ample closet space), and cheerful, sincere service.

Value is enhanced with the complimentary breakfast (excellent -- fresh eggs, omelettes, homemade bread, French toast etc) and happy hour (which we never actually made it to).

The restaurant -- Downstairs -- is cozy and relaxing, really lovely intimate courtyard that attracts non-guests (but we never had to wait for table). Breakfast was always relaxing, and we often found ourselves there for a quick afternoon bite or drink. Loved: special bloody marys, omelets and bacon, truffle mac and cheese, drunken chicken sandwich.

It was easy for us to direct taxis -- just tell them Beijing Lu and Jiaozhou Lu (the intersection) and point from there.

The hotel doesn't have it's own gym but has complimentary passes to a boutique gym steps away. Was easy and nice.

If you taxi to hotel from Maglev station, it should be about 80 RMB.

Would definitely stay again.

I've been there with my boyfriend in January, all the staff was very nice, the food also, the Basil Strawberry cocktail - amazing, the decoration of the lobby/retaurant etc. was taken from old french concession objects it was very nice. The rooms are very convenient, the location is just absolutly perfect. I guess the garden must be amazing in summer.
Nothing more to say !

My wife and I stayed for a couple of days as part of our honeymoon and loved it. We were upgraded to a garden view room which had a very stylish and beautiful design; not your typical hotel room design--and for the better. We liked the clever use of recycled materials. One or two things in the room looked like they could use a refresh, but they were minor details. The weather at this time of year didn't allow us to enjoy the patio, but the view up there is quite nice. The staff was very helpful and professional (including a very quick, hassle-free check-in right in the room itself). The Downstairs restaurant was excellent (thanks, chef Siobhan!), and the complementary breakfast and happy hour with good wine and tasty appetizers were nice additions and make the hotel good value compared with other offerings. The location is also excellent for walking or getting around downtown. In all, we loved it and hope to be back!

I stayed at URBN a year ago and have been back countless time to enjoy the great patio and nice atmosphere many times now that I live in Shanghai.

The design of the rooms is a nice change from the standard hotel room. Different levels for the bed, living area and bathroom make it a unique experience.

I love the fact that they are a carbon neutral hotel - doing their part to reduce the impact that the hotel has on the environment.

Overall a great place to rest your head in the heart of the city.
